Most of the teens shop at those stores when their parents leave Alpena once a year to drive to Fashion Square Mall for their annual school shopping trip. Alpena can barely support a freakin' Taco Bell; there's no way they could support even one of those stores. Stores like that don't even think about opening up in an area with a population of less than a few hundred thousand in a 50-mile radius. (Thursday Dec 24 | post #22)
So based on this logic, if all the spaces around the handicapped space are vacant, it's okay to park in the handicapped spot even if one doesn't have a handicapped permit. Sweet. Rules is rules, people. If you're not going to follow them, don't cry when you get busted. (Nov 30, 2009 | post #5)
For some reason the powers that be -- and not just at the mall, this is a city-wide mindset -- insist on catering to a demographic that is notoriously tight with a buck (see: mallwalkers and/or senior citizens) and then they wonder why they have to close the doors because no money is being spent. (Nov 30, 2009 | post #15)
I understand all of that. Jeffssis did not. If you re-read his original post, he gives the impression that keeping the doors open on a business that makes no money should be easy-peasy. He was the one not taking overhead, customer base, economic conditions for the area and hyper-global-megatrons like Wal-Mart into consideration. I was merely pointing out that if running a business that makes no profits is such a cakewalk, he should give it a try. (Nov 18, 2009 | post #7)
If operating a successful business that doesn't rake in a bunch of cash is such a piece of cake, Jeffssis, does this mean you'll be opening a book store in Alpena to replace the one that's closing? (Nov 12, 2009 | post #4)

Second Venture Inn in Rogers City
So my cousin and her family (seven people total), who were visitng from the Boston area, stop at Second Venture Inn -- formerly known as Kelly's Venture Inn -- last week on their way back to Alpena from the island. The restaurant was empty. They were the only customers. Her son has life-threatening food allergies so she packs food and drink that is safe for him to eat. When the owner of the restaurant found this out, he told her that he didn't care if her kid could die, he either had to eat the food prepared there or they could leave. Needless to say, he lost seven sales that night. It's too bad the new owner is such a jackass because as Kelly's, this was a popular stopping point for the hockey families traveling back and forth from the UP to Alpena. Word travels especially fast among hockey communities... (Aug 20, 2009 | post #1)
How, exactly, did I spread the rumor even further? By telling people that, WHETHER OR NOT THE RUMOR WAS TRUE, marrying the only person you've ever dated is a big mistake? You need to work on your reading comprehension there, Einstein. (May 11, 2009 | post #20)
Boomer and Miss May, who is stopping YOU from opening up a teen night club or an indoor/outdoor "coffee" house style place? As for keeping the beaches open at night, are you okay with paying even more in property taxes to fund the lifeguards and cleaning staff, plus the electricity needed to keep the place lit up and the extra liability insurance? Or are you both "Somebody ought to do something... just not me... and it better not cost me any money" typical Alpena types? (May 10, 2009 | post #7)
HA! Alpena thrives on gossip! It's the town's life blood! And whether the rumors of this affair are true or not, let this be a lesson to the kids -- this is why you don't marry your high school sweetheart. They're called 'first loves' for a reason -- more are supposed to come after. (May 10, 2009 | post #17)
