Price gouging at the local pump - Ruidoso News
The real shame is that there is no alternative to private transportation (i.e. cars) in Ruidoso, so you are stuck with what you got at the pump. No busses, no trolleys, nothing. That on top of the fact there is no "core" to the village makes it impossible to avoid giving your money to OPEC, Shell, etc. each and every time you fill up. Think the current prices are rough? Whatcha gonna do when gas gets to be at the level of what the Europeans have been paying for the last 20 years? (Wednesday Aug 27 | post #10)
Anyone else notice the "Vote Sederwall" spam on these comment boards/forums? What gives? I'm not that into politics, but this type of shilling is not meant to be seen on forums. I am working on banning the IP address of the spammer. (Thursday Aug 21 | post #1)
The river giveth and taketh away - Ruidoso News
Why not? Freddie and Fannie May got my tax dollars. Not to mention that the guv'ment brokered the Bear Stearns deal earlier this year. Sounds like you're of the "it's only a mental recession" and "Americans are whiners" crowd. Wake up. The government derives its power from THE PEOPLE! THE PEOPLE pay the bureaucrats' salaries. They work for us. That's why they exist in the first place. Otherwise we'd all be little kingdoms unto ourselves, living off the land and off the grid. The Libertarian ideal, I suppose. As it stands, people have got every right to seek help from Uncle Sam. That's why we're a nation to begin with. If you don't think so, that's fine, but don't try to borrow any sugar from your anti-government cohort the Unabomber, I hear he's out of town at the moment. (Thursday Aug 7 | post #13)
Dive into floodwater saves fawn
Dude is lucky he didn't drown trying to save the deer. Would've been a different story entirely. Wonder if he thought of his children before or after he was being congratulated on his deeds. (Tuesday Aug 5 | post #5)
War on Terror Out; Counterterrorism In
The problem for anyone that is of the "bomb them into the Stone Age" sect is: where do we get that money? In case you've forgotten, they (the terrorists, that is) fight us on THIER turf with relatively inexpensive methods. IEDs are cheap to make and easy to use. On the contrary, shipping troops to a foreign nation and occupying that nation while you try to separate "friend" from "foe" while under attack from said IEDs is VERY expensive. Unless you're in the top 1% (give or take) of this country you (and your children and your grandchildren) are going to pay for this for a LONG time. Which brings me to my last point; if people are so into killing these guys, if they think the war is such a great idea, why aren't they in the armed services now? I understand that many people with this mindset are, and that's great. Now, just get the rest of the people that feel so vociferously about this approach to put their boots on and get to movin'. The government needs more canon fodder and the terrorists need more people to blow up, so do your part! (Wednesday Jul 30 | post #29)
Losing the track would be identity theft - Ruidoso News
This is an EXCELLENT point. As it stands, Hubbard has created a lot of wealth and opportunity for Ruidoso (and the surroudning communities, as well), while profiting handsomely himself. It is hardly arguable that without his investments the economy of Ruidoso would be greatly diminished. The issue at hand now is one of economic inertia. Unfortuantely for the people of Ruidoso, the inertia is squarely in Mr. Hubbard's favor. Ruidoso does not have the most diversified of economic bases and is as such beholden to the whims of the man with the money. Of course, survivial is possible without Hubbard, but it will be an altered playing field. A larger example of this would be the recent bail out with your (federal) tax dollars of Freddie Mac and Fannie May. Once the ball gets rolling, to stop it would be disastrous to the economy. Open drunkenness hits Nob Hill district - Ruidoso News
I cannot speak definitively for any of them, but my bet is that they are not homeless. Your guess about "sleeping it off" is accurate, in my estimation. They wander over from wherever, get their booze from Walgreens, and now that they can't go over to the park at the "Y" they just go up the hill and find a tree to lean against. I can't tell you for certain if your cabin is damaged or not, but I know that area very well (we live off of Third/Chelsea) and the water has taken out the bridges on Main Street. Those bridges had at least 4-5 feet of clearance in normal times. They are now completely overrun. Since North Loop is in a little depression I think you might want to brace yourself for the real possibility of flood damage. (Jul 28, 2008 | post #2)
Hauling of trash becomes cost-prohibitive - Ruidoso News
Unfortunately for those who live in more rural areas, with the rising cost of fuel there will be adjustments to your living situation in the form of heretofore unseen fees. Everyone is feeling the pain, and that's just the result of how our infrastructure and transportation have developed in the last half century. The tourists that come to Ruidoso feel that pinch, too. Pointing fingers and calling it a "local" versus "outsider " issue is completely wrong. (Jul 25, 2008 | post #7)
Grand jury indicts pair on threats to judge, ADA - Ruidoso News
These statements alone should bar you from any further jury duty, Ms. Bar The Door. "Root for the prosecution"? You know, part of being a responsible jury member is being a fair, rational and impartial peer, not an advocate for one side before the facts are heard. (Jul 8, 2008 | post #19)
County dutifully acts to protect the Capitans - Ruidoso News
What's so wrong with riding a bike or walking to work? Won't kill you. In fact, based on the figures I see on some of the people lumbering up and down Mid-Town, a little exercise would do 'em good. (Jun 25, 2008 | post #8)
