9.5% in SF. But try to raise property taxes and see what happens. I figure the easiest taxes to raise are those on out-of-towners (rental car adn hotel taxes), user fees (tolls, tuition) followed by sales, excise, wage income, property and non-wage income in that order. (Nov 19, 2009 | post #694)

No, my point is that if Safeway thinks consumers will pay more than $5/$6.5 for the particular size box, Safeway would already be charging that price. Why should the company wait until its costs go up in order to raise prices? (Nov 19, 2009 | post #693)

My point here was about sales tax. That other taxes might be less regressive doesn't change the fact that sales tax is the most regressive tax around, and the tax most likely to be increased. (Nov 19, 2009 | post #687)

Nonsense. Any business that could charge more for it's products should already be doing so. Failure to charge the profit-maximizing price should get the CEO fired. Regardless, Wal-Marts' prices can be kept artificially low becuase of all the government subsidies the company gets. Let's take away the subsidies and let the company compete in a free market. It's money for nothing alright, but from the employer's perspective. You don't get EITC unless you work for wages that are too low to live on--it's a government subsidy to get people to do work that they might not do in a 'free' market, and one of the many ways WalMart steals from taxpayers. If we restored the workers' right to organize, they could force WalMart to pay a living wage & taxpayers could stop subsidizing this profit-making enterprise. (Nov 18, 2009 | post #681)

So you bought stock with post-tax income--so what? I bought this computer with post-tax imcome, then paid sales tax on it. Sales tax is the most regressive tax around--the poorer you are, the higher the percentage of your income you pay. (Nov 18, 2009 | post #673)

Thank you. I have no idea why I keep arguing with these guys--I could be watching a movie or sleeping or working out or cleaning house or just about anything else more productive. (Nov 16, 2009 | post #660)

Dividends are paid out of a corporation's retained earnings, which is accrued post-tax income--but corporations have a knack for piling up the retained earnings without paying much in taxes (or even getting refunds). So the whole tax-twice thing is mostly myth. But since dividends are the opposite of investment, the more highly they are taxed the more likely a corporation is to reinvest retained earnings in something productive. And if you ever succeed in making sense, I will be the first to congratulate you. You've got a ways to go tho. (Nov 16, 2009 | post #658)

FWIW, I have a degrees in Business Administration and Economics, even got a little certificate saying I graduated with honors. Whoop-de-do. Anyways, there's a difference between someone who starts or runs an aircraft repair business and somebody who buys a share of Boeing stock that has changed hands several thousand times since Boeing first sold it to somebody. My point was (and remains) that income derived from other people's work (dividends, interest, most capital gains, most rent) should be taxed at least as highly as income from one's own work. You're welcome to keep arguing with points I haven't made if that makes you feel better tho. (Nov 16, 2009 | post #657)
