Four tagging suspects jailed in South Pasadena

Actually Artcrime (and Sparky too), y'all are not tough. Y'all are taggers. The reason taggers tag is because they are powerless, and this is a way to feel in control of something. Taggers feel powerless for many reasons. Perhaps they are physically weak and get pushed around by their peers or gang members. Perhaps they are abused by their father or step father. Perhaps they feel abandoned by a mother who never really wanted them. They cry out to society, "love me!" only to hear silence. One thing is for sure.. they are mentally weak, unable to make or find their way in structured society. They argue that society does not understand them. They argue that people have closed minds which prevent them from seeing the beauty of their illigitimate art. They argue that society is full of haters or old fashioned fogies. They can't understand why so many are against them. The reason they cannot understand: mental weakness. Taggers, you are only fooling yourselves by believing these arguments. If you spend time doing some soul searching, you will see the root of your art is based in your being completely powerless.  (5 hrs ago | post #40)

Despite recession, developers plug along on massive Old Town Mo...

There is also the state's "density bonus" in the housing code... there will be affordable (sub-market rate) units sprinkled among the full-rate units. Won't you be upset to find out your next door neighbor paid less than half what you paid.. just cause they don't make enough money. Socio-economic diversity could arguably be a good thing for a city.. but within the same building? You are just asking for trouble.  (11 hrs ago | post #19)

Planning process reveals Pasadena residents' distaste for high-...

It is totally disgusting to me how the planning dept and City Council are handling the issue of "high density". I asked Tornek at a D7 meeting to explain to the others in the room about these state mandated laws (because hardly any resident even knows about them), and he said it was too complicated to explain and glossed over it. At one of the community planning meetings, I asked a similar question... and they wanted to steer clear of that topic, saying that it was evocative subject and would influence people's comments... making it hard to get to people's "real feelings" about the city. Only when people's "real feelings" have come out... now they are forced to reveal the truth. We citizens need to band together.. sign petitions, write our state rep, and let them know we are disgusted with the unabated development. We need someone to step up and organize residents. I don't have the bandwidth to do it, but would certainly volunteer time to the effort... though, given recent planning developments, there is a high liklihood we will move our family out of the area.  (12 hrs ago | post #8)

Two PUSD schools up for prestigious award

So, at first the article says the schools are waiting to hear results... then it says they "will submit applications" So which is it? It is kind of hard to get excited if: a) you have to submit an application to get an award b) you haven't even submitted the app yet.  (Wednesday Nov 25 | post #2)

Four tagging suspects jailed in South Pasadena

Couple of problems here, Mr. Artcrime. Graffiti is not part of LA culture; it is part of a small, but destructive sub-culture. Taggers frequently do engage in more serious crimes, including murder (see several LA stories of innocent people who have confronted taggers vandalizing their property). Additionally, tagging is known to be a "gateway drug" to more serious gang related activities. Graffiti may be visual energy to you, but is certainly not to others (me included). Only someone with a closed mind would assert that only those with open minds would see graffiti as visual energy. That would be like me saying that Zamfir, master of the pan flute, is audible energy.. and dissing anyone who agrees. As far as "moving the f** out", well, good luck with that. We are not going to be run out of town by a bunch of ill-fitted half-wits with spray cans. It's easier to bust you and relegate you to a life either prison or cleaning toilets on the outside.  (Monday Nov 23 | post #29)

UCLA scientists: air pollution high near Santa Monica Airport

Urban planning in LA County is the most ret.arded thing I've ever seen. Who in their right mind would think that having an airport runway within 300 ft of residences could be nothing but bad news? I see this wacky bs all over. Down the road from my business, there are several furniture refinishing and car repainting businesses. I can smell them a block away. Wedged between them is a house.. where kids live.. they get high just watching cartoons in their living room.  (Friday Nov 20 | post #3)

UC Regents sign off on student fee increase Protestors amass at...

I do agree that we need to take a look at the compensation packages of the administration, teachers, and service employees for areas to trim costs... but kids, go take out a loan, get a summer job, research thousands of unawarded scholarships. You are already paying a reduced rate for your tuition, because a chunk of it is taxpayer subsidized. Finally, it's the middle class that gets kicked in the weebles again... because the low-income student continue to get all the subsidies at the middle class student's expense. Many students from middle class families will have to take out larger loans and will effectively earn less after graduation than their low-income counterparts because more of their income will go to loan repayment.  (Friday Nov 20 | post #1)

Teachers, LAUSD at odds over cutbacks

I would love to be a teacher, perhaps at the community college level. If I felt like I could make a competitive salary, I would seriously consider it. I do (and have done) alot of teaching within the various companies I've worked for and have really enjoyed taking very complex subjects (in mathematics, statistics, and numerical optimization) and making them understandable to non-experts. I recently found out my company will be relocating to the east coast (wants to get out of California), and I have declined to offer to move with them (wife wants to stay)... Too bad they are laying off a bunch of teachers right now, or I may have considered a career change 8^) (I still would prefer to have a higher salary w/ 401K versus a lower salary and a pension, tho)  (Thursday Nov 19 | post #68)

LAUSD ultimatum: Pay cuts or layoffs

This is a great point. Many argue that the pensions are a great way to attract and retain talented teachers. It seems to me that a person is rolling the dice... if you really think you will survive as a teacher for the full 30 years (either survive the frustrations, the lifestyle or the layoffs), then a pension would be a good thing. However, if you don't make it that long, I personally would prefer a 401K to a pension, because upon my departure, I could roll it into an IRA and make investment choices myself (or thru my financial advisor) which could potentially reap much larger retirement funds. So, as a new teacher... I wouldn't really be very excited that I have a pension plan. Thoughts?  (Thursday Nov 19 | post #296)

LAUSD ultimatum: Pay cuts or layoffs

Do you mean, would I be willing to forego SS payments and self fund my retirement!? Have you seen what the SS payouts are? They don't even factor into my retirement equation. So the answer would be a resounding YES for me personally. BTW - I'm with ya'll on the *illegal* immigration thing as well. And, before I get called racist, my wife's parents immigrated here, legally.  (Thursday Nov 19 | post #290)
