Scientists Say We Can See Sound
Hmmmmm ... I see what they're saying - lol. The study appears to be open access: http://www.biomedc entral.com/1471-22 02/9/79/abstract I vaguely remember hearing about synesthesia before. What a unique way of perception. If this study is showing the interconnectedness of visual and auditory input, it may be that people with synesthesia have even more connections than average. Giant Dog Turd Wreaks Havoc At Swiss Museum
I happened across this story and was going to come here to comment on how weird it was, but it's not in the wire yet. Here's a link: http://www.guardia n.co.uk/world/2008 /aug/12/3 "A giant inflatable dog turd created by the American artist Paul McCarthy was blown from its moorings at a Swiss museum, bringing down a power line and breaking a window before landing in the grounds of a children's home ..." Ha ha ha - glad nobody was hurt. "How did you get that gash in your arm?" "Um... well... there was this giant dog turd and ..." (Tuesday Aug 12 | post #1)

Is The Third Law Of Thermodynamics More Of A Guideline?
I was just thinking about this topic again at work today and remembered Vonnegut's story about ice-nine in his novel Cat's Cradle. http://www.technov elgy.com/ct/conten t.asp?Bnum=415 Scary, huh? Actually something like ice-nine is probably about as likely as grey goo. http://www.greygoo .org/ Nano-weaponry - now that is scary! http://www.futuris tspeaker.com/2008/ 05/nano-weaponry-e ntre-to-a-twisted- reality/ http://lifeboat.co m/ex/nanoweaponry (Tuesday Aug 12 | post #36)

Agent Graves here (aka Gravy the Cat). Reporting that dawn is the time to begin incessant meowing in your human's face or at their bedroom door. It doesn't matter if you need something, the important thing is to let your human know that their day of service to you has begun. Tomorrow's sunrise for my area is 6:11 a.m. Check for your sunrise time here: http://www.timeand date.com/worldcloc k/sunrise.html Agent Graves signing off (Monday Aug 11 | post #3645)

Need suggestions to fatten up my male cat
Oh, I'm so, so sorry. How painful and horrible. What an idiot that kid was being. I've had two friends with pretty severe brain injuries (one moto-cross & one jet-ski accident) and things do get much better with time. It is good that you have support. My car accident was pretty bad as far as facial damage, etc. Anger is a completely healthy response. I also had fear of driving on the road, depression, etc. It all takes time to process and deal with. People tried to rush me back into being "normal" but when you've been through a trauma, missed a month of work, etc. no one can tell you what to feel or for how long. I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers. I agree, our animals are a godsend at times like these. (Monday Aug 11 | post #9)

Solving the Cell: Will the Future of Biology be Boring?
"If you happen to be that rare person who doesn't know the name of a yeast gene, try Cdc28". Ha ha ha - I don't consider myself that rare - there must be millions of us that can't come up with name of a yeast gene off the tops of our heads! I do understand that the article was written to convince younger scientists that cell biology doesn't have to become boring, etc. It probably is the rare molecular biologist who can't rattle of a half dozen yeast genes. If a cure for various cancers is on the horizon, then I hope these scientists take this article to heart and don't "jump ship and start filling in the details for the next organism in line."
