Thanks Dis, we're all on the same page here. Mets need to make some bold moves. They should have the finances and enough trading chips to make this kind of deal or a Halladay deal. If they were to acquire a young, slugging 1B, they could consider Figgins for LF  (14 hrs ago | post #26583)

Fully agree with this post, my worry in this situation of keeping Ollie and taking on Cabrera's monster contract is that they wouldn't pursue a bigtime pitcher to team with Johan. Cabrera, Gonzo, Fielder all great fit for the Mets.  (14 hrs ago | post #26582)

Back to Reese, he's been ok, adding to Acorsi's roster, but he's not had a good season. 3rd pick was overkill at WR. As you point out, team has other, bigger needs. Defense has no identity since Strahan left. Needs a lot of work. O-line too. SOunds like the Niners  (20 hrs ago | post #78321)

I have talked about the Niners GM and draft choices in the past. Alex SMith a bust, set the franchise back 5 years. I said it before, will say it again. You screw up a top 5 choice with a QB, it kills the franchise, gets the coach fired, starts the rebuilding process all over. Gore was a great pick, 3rd rounder. Davis, Crabtree, Willis all no brainers, good picks. Staley, good pick. Manny Lawson and Balmer on defense, so-so to lousy picks, defense paying for it now. Team needs to draft O-line and defense next year, don't need to draft offense skill positions, unless someone goes down with an ACL or some other long term injury over the last 5 games. If they can sign a free agent QB that upgrades over SMith and Hill do it. Otheriwse stay away from drafting a QB till the later rounds, maybe develop him into future trade bait. Packers GM's and Holmgren always did that. Got Favre, then drafted and traded Hasselbach and Aaron Brooks and I believe there may have been a 3rd QB they did that with. Smart. O-line and defense need help for my team if they are going to the next level. Now, if somehow they could bring in Boldin next season, I'd go for that. The offense is scoring enough points this year, defense and O-line are the problems  (20 hrs ago | post #78320)

West not a good analogy for Davis. Jeffries is a better comparison. Also, we fans need to be careful about condemning Murphy, look at his numbers last year and compare them to Jeff Kent's numbers as a Met. Now, I don't thnik for a minute that Murphy will ever knock in 120 runs like Kent did in later years. But I believe Murphy can be a 20 HR, 85-90 RBI guy. If Mets move this kid, it better be in a package for an established star, not someone fading like when they moved Kent. I still believe they ought to try Murph at 2B. Bottom line is, the Mets have much better trading chips now then when they got Johan.  (20 hrs ago | post #26578)

For Cabrera ? One thing to remember is Polanco is a free agent. Now the other thing is this, if detroit's main reason to move Cabrera is a salary dump, the talent exchanged doesn't need to be even. Anybody taking a 120 mil contract off their hands is doing them a favor. Viewing it from a monetary status, Ollie has to be included in that deal, if not, the Tigers should have to cover 1 yr's worth of Cabrera's salary. You can't trade 120 mil of contract and not take back some short term money in exchange. If Mets are going to give up 3 top prospects in a deal, it needs to be for a player like this is signed for a long term and is pretty much a sure thing to be productive for a long time, because of his age and track record. Giving up the same 3 prospects for Haladay is much riskier  (21 hrs ago | post #26577)

Well, all I know is when I "quit" on the Mets in 2007 with 2 or 3 games left I was vilified for years. Giants fans quitting with 5 games to go (you even before that) is interesting. Giants beat man on WFAN theorizes that offensive line is beat up from years of pounding style. Need new blood on the O-line. Reese should take a hit for some of his draft choices, especially the 3rd rounder. I appreciate the objective posting of you fans, just interesting how things are viewed in this forum, isn't it? I still think Giants make the playoffs.  (21 hrs ago | post #78308)

Wow, Giants fans in here bailing out on their team, nearly 1/3 of the season still left. Unbelievable. Rotten perfromance last night, no doubt  (Friday | post #78288)

Mets once took a chance on a player with a dubious past, name of Keith hernandez, it worked out fine. Fielder is like so many of the modern athletes, wants his money and wants it now. But he'll earn it on the field. Got to get him now while he's young, once he gets past 30, the weight is going to be an issue. I'd take him here in a heartbeat, same with Cabrera  (Wednesday Nov 25 | post #26570)

Thanks Bruns, Happy Thanksgiving to you and all good Mets fans. Only way I'd want them to move Davis is in a package for one of those power first basemen, or Pujols of course. Murph definitely expendable if they don't have any position for him besides 1B. Still would like to see the kid try 2B.  (Wednesday Nov 25 | post #26569)
