Big Al, I am not an expert as you appear to be on Galileo but here is another take on this issue. You bugged me just enough to see what I could find what other people said. You may find this person's viewpoint interesting, I sure did. Robert Nisbet (1914-1996), Nisbet, a sociologist by training and historian by temperament – but no Catholic, or even much of a believer – warned of such abuses in an debunking the Enlightenment myth that the Catholic Church brutally oppressed Galileo. Early on, Nisbet adds, Galileo told his friend Kepler that he was censoring himself for "fear not of ecclesiastical but of scientific-scholar ly opinion." As Galileo's views became known, the first public protests arose from "jealous and apprehensive university professors," not from clerical quarters. When Galileo's friend Pope Urban VIII reluctantly allowed a trial by the Inquisition (headed by another Galileo supporter), the great man's nemesis was no churchman but a fellow scientist. Most important for our purposes is Galileo's fate after his enemies forced the Inquisition to find him "guilty" of Copernican teachings. Though made to take a pro forma oath of recantation, he was not imprisoned. Instead, he was given "house arrest" at his wealthy patron's estate where he had long conducted most of his research. He lived for years, and far from being daunted or suppressed, he produced some of his most important writings, "was in constant communication with the leading scientific lights of Italy and all Europe," and had "as many students as he wished" to assist him and continue his work after his death.  (Thursday Dec 10 | post #262)

Sound Off! (Dec. 10)

A great idea then Michelle Obama "For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country." could be changed to "For the second time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country." You are correct that she has done nothing spectacular, if fact she hasn't done much at all. But wait, isn't this why our amateur President received the Nobel Peace Prize? So to be consistent, give it to a person who has done nothing. I have a another suggestion "Las Cruces High School for Dummies". It might be a winner.  (Thursday Dec 10 | post #3)

George Stephanopoulos to take over from Diane Sawyer as 'Good M...

Diane Sawyer, a news anchor, you got to be kidding. Brainless Couric and CBS is out, NBC is out if it is still on the air, now ABC with no substance Sawyer is out. Doesn't leave much. Need to look and see if NBC is still viable and Fox and make a decision to watch one or turn the TV off.  (Thursday Dec 10 | post #15)

The truth will always win. I was not involved in the controversy that happen 400 years ago. The technology has improved. People at that thime informed themselves with the best available information available and formed an opinion. We believe that life starts at conception, you may believe that life starts at the age of reasoning, age of consent or you may believe that life starts whenever you decide it starts. Will all humans enjoy Personhood in the 21st Century? Thirteen states have amendments to be voted on in 2010 declaring that life starts at conception. Nineteen other states have seen initiatives where this is being considered. One State, South Dakota, has declared that life starts at conception. Would all of this change your conscience, it should not if what you believe is the truth. If you have done your homework and informed your conscience to the best of your ability and feel that the killing of the unborn is morally justified, then God will welcome you home. God knows what you know.  (Tuesday Dec 8 | post #251)

So you think that the taxpaying Bishops no longer have freedom of speech? SAD. Have you ever phone, e-mailed, or talked in person to an elected official? I have and I along with all the Bishops, every right to give them an opinionEven taxpaying corporations cannot vote. BTW the Church does not voteAnd the schools, welfare department, social services, fire department, emergency services, etc. are funded by my tax dollars which I have never used but all are a part of the common good of the majority, just as Churches are.  (Tuesday Dec 8 | post #248)

The Church does not judge, they present their opinion. God alone judges man's sins and then his condemnation or heaven. Why wouldn't they trust the founder of their ChurchInformed " conscience is a teaching of the Catholic Church. If you don't agree, your choice. It would seem silly to me for a person of some intelligence not to have an informed conscience. Yes, Kennedy can kill his unborn children or allow you to kill your unborn children, but if you want to be a Catholic, our teachings do not believe that the killing of the unborn is a moral good, it is intrinsically evil.  (Monday Dec 7 | post #241)

What price did he pay? We all have our trials on earth. Some just bigger than others. God knows and he will judge Galileolikes" ??????? Your opinion. Can you name one where the Church enjoyed doing this. SADThe same thing that happens when you are wrongHis choice. He better be right. The Bishop has stated his position. Kennedy has to stick with his "informed " conscience otherwise he is still guilty of committing a sin.  (Monday Dec 7 | post #237)

If your kid came to you and said "your father/or husband is abusing me", would you call the authorities and have your father or husband arrested BEFORE you were absolutely sure. Wouldn't the first impression you would have is "this just can't be true" because you were close to both personsDo not need a defense, those that commit crimes should be arrested and brought to trial. The Bishops did what all people did in the past, if it was your family, you kept it within the family. If it was in the schools, you did what the Bishops didYour opinion. First, the Bishops did not want anyone to die. Second, the teachings of the Church states that anyone who has an abortion, aids in any way for someone to have an abortion, money, time, talent, etc. are automatically excommunicated. The Bishops in making public these excommunication’s, were instructing the public on the teachings of the Catholic Church. Third, if doctors, mothers and the person pregnant, with competent medical personnel can perform an abortion if the life of the pregnant women is in "real" danger. If the proper procedures are followed, no excommunication is necessary. These people were Catholics and they should know the teachings of their faith. It really is a non issue. As it turned out - A nine year old needing to live the rest of her life with this knowledge. Two live human beings killed. A rapist who will be judged by God. A mother who has to live with the knowledge that she helped kill her two grandchildren. Two doctors who have to live with the fact that they are guilty of killing. As it turned out, no one wins.  (Monday Dec 7 | post #236)

Legally yes, morally no. Society that takes the life of the innocent unborn child and approves of this will then the next step will be to take the life of children up to twelve and older persons who no longer care to live. Currently going on in the Netherlands right now and England is thinking about sliding down the slippery slope. Who should live and who shall die. SAD  (Monday Dec 7 | post #235)

We could solve this problem by giving parents vouchers to give to the school of their choice. Good students would not be held back by unruly and I don't care children.  (Monday Dec 7 | post #34)
