While I reserve the judgement on the personality of said fallen soldier, and by default I respect anyone who turned out to be in the line of fire so willingly or not for whatever reason, I have something else to point out. American patriotism (so-called, mayhaps?) strikes me as something tawdry and desperately ostentatious. It’s always flashy, flags, flags everywhere, ribbons, colours, loud slogans, and posh emotions. And they (Americans) try to appear patriotic so hard they bloat and crack at seams, as though otherwise, without trying *to appear*, they would become social outcast in their little proto-fascist set-up. And as they, in my opinion, misunderstand patriotism (like Mitt Romney, who supports a war and happy to send more of the America’ s youth to slaughter, while his 4 sons never put on the soldier’ s boots, nevermind put themselves in the enemy’s crossfire — but so long they waive that star-spangled banner with determination of a madman, they are as patriotic as it gets in the States), they misunderstand other concepts as well.
