This was in the news today: FORT WALTON BEACH — A 12-year-old girl was arrested for battery after she burned a boy at the W.E. Combs School, according to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office. Her charge is a misdemeanor. Lawmen say she used a Bic lighter on the boy’s elbow Monday. The incident was recorded on the school’s security system. An instructor said he smelled something burning. A female deputy searched the girl after her arrest and found the lighter wrapped in black electrical tape in her underwear. The girl is from Niceville, according to her arrest report. Rosalie - here is Brad's advice for your issue with a grandchild: Brad: First, use words. "I don't like that." You will have to model them for a 31/2 yr old. Also, go to the victim first, bullies hate that Supervision is important as well to protect him from the unfair advantage that the 8 yr old has. (May 5, 2008 | post #17)

Thought you guys would like to see this, Russ Mitchell (a News Anchor from the Early Show) sent us this note today about bullying: Let me begin by stating the obvious: The series of teen beatings we have seen over the past few months is incredibly disturbing and scary beyond belief. I think it is especially alarming for those of us who are parents of teenagers. I can't imagine how I would feel if my child became a victim one of these attacks. I applaud WTSP for hosting this forum. At the same time, I think the news media as a whole needs to bear some responsibility for fueling the problem. Too often we are quick to put video of these bullying incidents on the air, which has led to copy cat beatings. In fact, the kids involved in the first beating case most of us reported on later admitted they did it to get on You Tube. Since then we've seen more of these cases involving people with the intent of just getting on TV. It's tricky but I think we have to be more careful about just putting something on TV because the content is shocking. The media has to be smarter and more responsible. Thanks and again, a big thumbs up to WTSP for hosting this very important discussion. Russ Mitchell (May 2, 2008 | post #21)
