I don't disagree with you guys that drug addiction is a problem and that drugs contribute to crime. ...but putting people in a jail cell, as opposed to a rehab center, does not help them overcome their addictionsSo? I think you misunderstood where I was going with that. My complaint isn't with the officers themselves. They're stand-up guys, for the most part, just doing their job. But we've got a fundamentally flawed system, especially in Louisiana, in which law enforcement are actively encouraged to spend a HUGE chunk of resources, time and manpower busting people for drug offenses... most of them minor, and nearly all of them victimless. You say the cops can't be everywhere at once, and you're right. Which is why we should stop with the idiotic drug laws to give them more opportunity to be where real crime is happening.  (May 6, 2009 | post #8)

Everyone's brainwashed to a degree. ;) But no, my point is that Bush's involvement in the prayer day events is clearly because of his reliance on the support of the neo-conservative Christians on the far right of the party. And if you're one of those ultra-radical fundies, then yes, I AM calling you brainwashed. And yes, I agree that the flyover PR stunt was a waste of time, and a botched one at that. And hey, I can even admit that Obama goofed on this one, not just his PR guy... in the sense that part of being in charge of an operation is being the person accountable when your employees screw up - being the figurehead for blame, essentially. But honestly... these suggestions that somehow this botched PR stunt means our country is less safe under Obama and he's a threat to national security... WHAT??? And the less obvious, but incredibly pervasive social segregation that occurs, especially in the south, doesn't help matters. Unfortunately, even though bigots like Toby don't have their way with segregated schools, they have still managed to create a society where people are very unwilling to hang out with those of another ethnicity to any great degree.
