Folklorico Latino de Woodland celebrates 23 years of dancing

From the editor: For the record, I delete posts when they are brought to my attention as being "abusive. " If they are not flagged for my attention I rarely do anything. Regardless, a number of these postings have strayed significantly from the event itself and have degenerated into pure racist rhetoric. As such, this comment site is now closed. jim smith, editor, daily democrat  (Friday Nov 13 | post #61)

Some with opinions like to remain in the dark

The editor replies: Thanks for the information. The letters were uploaded for the web the same as everything else for that page. I don't know why they didn't appear on line. Again, thanks for the heads up.  (Monday Nov 9 | post #11)

It's kicker, spelled with a 'k'

The Editor replies: Our Sports Editor Bruce Burton tried to retain a stringer to cover the game but was unsuccessful. The Wolves coaching staff did respond to phone calls following the game, but deadlines necessitated minimal coverage, which amounted to around 10 inches in the print edition. The online edition had no coverage due to a computer issue which made the story unavailable for posting. As for covering both schools on the same night with Democrat staff writers, that is no longer possible due to the size of the present staff. We don't like it, but we have no alternative. jim smith, editor, dd  (Oct 6, 2009 | post #5)

It's kicker, spelled with a 'k'

The Editor Replies: The "n" which you are reading online is actually a solid, black square in the printed edition of The Democrat. The typestyle doesn't translate to our online edition. This is common. We have looked at alternatives but have not found anything acceptable.  (Oct 6, 2009 | post #2)

Garlic spill closes I-5 for hours Thursday

Reply from the editor: The story was changed as information was updated. Initial reports from the CHP were that "garlic" was spilled from the truck. A second, written report, obtained later by The Democrat stated that "onions" had been spilled. A revised story was filed, and the headline changed, based on that new information.  (Sep 19, 2009 | post #2)

Obama speech further divides nation

This is the editor of The Daily Democrat: People who want to comment on stories posted online are welcome as long as they retain a certain amount of civility and decorum toward individuals involved in the story as well as each other. However, those who post crude, lewd or otherwise grossly offensive comments will be pulled either by myself, or can be flagged by others for removal. Additionally, continual abuse by commentators will lead to having the entire thread of a story removed. People must remember that commenting on stories is a privilege provided by The Democrat, not a right. Act like adults and treat each other with respect. jim smith, editor, The Daily Democrat  (Sep 8, 2009 | post #133)

East St. vehicle crash victim dead

reply from the editor: With respect (and contrary to popular belief), I am not here 24 hours a day. Nor do I edit every single story in the paper. I have others who write and edit and post stories as well. I saw the error this morning when I scanned The Democrat and the online edition, made a phone call, and posted the addition as soon as I could. jim smith  (Aug 31, 2009 | post #7)

East St. vehicle crash victim dead

The editor replies: This accident occurred Friday night at 9:20. There was another accident earlier in the day near the intersection of East Main Street and Thomas Street, which was not considered serious in nature, although it tie up traffic. In response to Woodland Watcher. You're right, sorry for the dropped first name, we cleared that up. And, yes, we need, the coroner's office to say a person is dead; otherwise we would not know if family members had been notified and The Democrat will not deliberately report the death of a person unless net of kin have learned about it first. jim smith, editor, dd  (Aug 31, 2009 | post #4)

The right of free expression does have bounds

Editor Jim Smith responds: Thank you for all the discussion and feedback. Believe it or not, I find this form of exchange valuable, even if it is anonymous. Several points: First, both Andy Porras and I know why we discontinued publishing his column and stories. It was not because he wasn't needed. That's as much as I care to go into out of my continuing respect for Andy. I am open to publishing the words from people of all walks of life (provided my budget will afford it). Second, in response to my calling people "stupid and ignorant," please remember the context of the Aug. 9 column, which focused on "mob rule" at the health care debates. I have no objection to open discourse which is passionate. I do object to people who speak without knowledge, or decide to ignore the truth for their own ends. When a person on Medicare says he doesn't want government interfering in his medical decisions, is that ignorance or stupidity? If a person compares President Obama to a Nazi or Adolph Hitler, is that ignorance or stupidity? And although this wasn't in the column, how do we label those individuals who show up at an open forum armed with handguns and assault rifles? Is that ignorance, stupidity, or worse. Perhaps use of the words "ignorance " and "stupidity " were not appropriate, but they sure fit the situations. Sorry it has taken me so long to reply to this exchange, I was swamped with preparing obituaries the past few days.  (Aug 25, 2009 | post #7)

Breastfeeding walk hosted by county

On what do you base your conclusion that The Democrat didn't cover this event? If it occurred on Thursday and you posted your comments on Thursday, what makes you think it isn't in the Friday Daily Democrat?  (Aug 13, 2009 | post #5)
