If we assume, despite the evidence to the contrary, that Mark 16:17-18 does belong in Scripture, does it teach that we should be handling snakes in church? The answer to that question is a definitive no. Mark 16:17-18 does not contain any imperatives. It does not say, “Go out and handle snakes.” It says “they will pick up snakes with their hands.” It is describing something that will occur, not commanding that something should occur. An example of this is the Apostle Paul in Acts 28:3-5, “Paul gathered a pile of brushwood and, as he put it on the fire, a viper, driven out by the heat, fastened itself on his hand … But Paul shook the snake off into the fire and suffered no ill effects.” Notice that Paul did not seek out to handle a snake. The snake bit Paul, but God protected Paul from the effects of the snake bite. Mark 16:17-18 is saying that if you are faithfully serving God in the spread of the Gospel, He can protect you from anything that may cross your path. If the snake handling churches were consistent, they would also follow the second part of Mark 16:18, “…and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all.” Scripture is consistent that God can and will protect us, according to His will, as we are serving Him. Scripture is also consistent that we are not to put the Lord to the test (Exodus 17:2; Matthew 4:7). Just as Jesus refused to jump off the pinnacle of the temple, even though God would send angels to protect Jesus, so are we to not intentionally put ourselves in situations that require God’s miraculous intervention. First Corinthians 10:9, while not speaking directly of snake handling in churches, says it best, “We should not test the Lord, as some of them did — and were killed by snakes.” (Jul 30, 2009 | post #106)
I'm not discrediting you religion… But I think that helping others to find Christ is truly the Lord. Visiting nursing homes and hospitals is truly the Lord. Dedicating time to help troubled children is truly the Lord. Teaching your family about God is truly the Lord. Standing up for the rights of unborn babies is truly the Lord. Helping abused women is truly the Lord. I cold go on and on… and I know your response is going to be that works can’t get you to Heaven. But as James said, faith without works is dead. To me, helping others to come to GOD is truly the Lord. That is exactly what Jesus did. You say that shaking a limp snake, drinking poison and torturing yourself with fire is truly the lord, funny how I picture those things in Hell. I know that the bible says that people can do these things. Mark 16:17-18 records, “and these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will … pick up snakes with their hands.” As a result of this text, there are some churches that practice snake handling. During church services, people actually handle poisonous snakes, supposedly giving evidence that they are true believers who are empowered and protected by God. Is that what Mark 16:17-18 is really instructing us to do? First, it is very important to remember that there are some questions regarding whether Mark chapter 16, verses 9-20 belong in the Bible. There is some evidence that these verses were not originally part of the Gospel of Mark. Some of the oldest and most reliable Greek manuscripts of the Gospel of Mark do not contain verses 9-20. Some other manuscripts contain Mark 16:9-20, but set them apart from the rest of the Gospel of Mark. As a result, it is not wise to use anything from Mark 16:9-20 as the sole basis for a doctrine or practice. Snake handling is one such example of a dubious concept from Mark 16:9-20. I went there in May of 2007 and had an eye exam and ordered some glasses and contacts. While I was there the Dr. told me that I did not look like the kind of guy who could tolerate contacts. So I told him that I had had them before and that I wanted to be fit for some new ones. He said “Well I think that you should just get glasses”. I said "I want contacts too, and that is what I am paying for." That should have been it, I should have walked out. But I went through with the exam. Just like you guys it took awhile to get the glasses & contacts.... After waiting about three months I finally received the glasses through the mail in August of 2007. They were the wrong prescription. So I took them back and they said that they would have to ship them off to be fixed. After about two more months of runaround, in October I was eventually told that they had lost them and would sell me another set. I said no, I already paid for them once. So they eventually sent me a set in December 2007, but were a different frame style. It took a total of 7 months to get some decent glasses. The contacts on the other hand, they sent me the wrong prescription three times. I finally gave up in February of 2008; I threw the glasses and contacts away and went to Wal-Mart. Also you assume I voted for Bush, but if your little self would have fully read all of my post you would have read the following…. "Why do you assume I am republican? I am neither Republican nor Democrat. Together, they corrupt our government and infringe upon our rights. I am an American who holds to the founding documents of my country, which include the right to freedom, and the right to not be controlled by government, and to my bible which hold the key to love, respect, and salvation. There are more than just two parties. But sense you think along party lines and not with commonsense I will try to help you by saying this…. I align my self with the Constitution Party beliefs. • I am conservative, which is conservation of the old way. • I am not racists, God created us all. • I believe that gays are people and should not be hated. • I believe that just because a few inches of skin are between an unborn baby and the world that it dose not make it less human. • People should be honored based on merit and not race or sex. You call your self “good citizen”, but a good citizen would get the facts before he comes to an argument. And lastly if you where a good citizen, why was both of your comments negative. But I guess its like I always say… When a liberal or a Democrat can’t argue with facts, they resort to name calling, as you have proven by calling me a “damn joke”. Well we see who the joke is now. Before you resort to judging some one and name calling, how about reading all of their post first. You state… …“just say you hate black people........what did little bush whacky do for health care, make the rich more rich. Give me a break.”… First of all, what does opposing nationalized healthcare got to do with hating blacks? You are so confused. Secondly, I am a conservative not a republican. There are more than just two parties you know. I did not vote for Bush, Gore, Kerry, or Obama. The following are exerts from past post of mine... Maybe after reading them you will better understand. And not be so judgmental of someone just because you disagree with them. You say I am racists, well in a past post I stated the following…. “I am a white conservative male and that alone results in me being considered racists sometimes. But along with my beliefs of pro-life, hard work and family values I also believe in and serve my lord Jesus Christ. When I read the Bible and the Constitution it clearly tells me that every man, woman and child is created by God and created equal. In my opinion, to be racists is to hate Gods creation. I don’t think it is wrong to marry bi-racial, whites marry Indians and no dig deal is made. As long as it is two races of the opposite sex, than God has no problem with it either. .................. .................. .............. Being discriminated or favored based on race, ability, social class or sex is wrong. If we are all Americans, and America is one big melting pot, than why are we still divided by race, social class or ability? Ever Legal Citizen of America is a legal citizen. Though I disagree with Obama’s policy and agenda, I yearn for the day that an American who is not a white or male is elected president of the United States, and is not a big deal, just looked upon as an every day common sort of thing.” .................. .................. .............. People like you claim that conservatives did not vote for Obama because he was black, but I have news for you. Those who voted against Obama who are conservative did not vote against him because he was black, we voted against him based on his ideology and policies. Color had nothing to do with it. As you may or may not recall… It was a republican/conserv ative president (Abraham Lincoln) who ended slavery. And Martin Luther King Jr. was a republican/conserv ative too. And they both fought for equal rights for blacks, which I to support. On the other hand, the president of the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis was a Democrat/liberal and he fought for slavery. It was in fact the democrats who where racists. A lot of democrats voted against him based on his color. Republicans and Conservatives were going to vote against a Democrat regardless of his color or sex for that matter. It was a select group of democrats that voted against Obama because of his color.
