Random Acts of Kindness

Just_Nobody.. you wouldn't like our Christmas dinner. Odd as it may seem our tradition is corned beef at Christmas, never on St Pat's..... I don't like it particularly (should say I didn't, the years have changed my tastes considerably) but it was the spouse's favorite dinner. Since St Pat's is my birthday this ended up as the compromise, aided by the fact that it is such an easy meal to fix, and the family cook was tired of so much work on the holidays!  (17 hrs ago | post #1445)

Obviously we'll never agree, but believe or not liberals are NOT anti American.. quite the opposite, we love this country as much as you do. The fact that we take the First Amendment as seriously as the Second, does not mean we don't love it. Many of us have and would die for your right to believe as you wish. Much of what you take for granted now, Social Security, Medicare, school lunch programs, Civil rights in the purest form, that is everyone has the right to vote unimpeded, all those things that the Founding Fathers hoped for, came as the result of liberals, fought every inch of the way by those who thought that the old way was just fine. Keep in mind that there was a time when the Republicans were the radicals.. supporting the abolitionists and claiming that the 10th did not include the right of secession.By the way it still doesn't, whatever the governor of Texas thinks. Kennedy is the only President I can think of who started out smack in the middle (which is where Nixon was too, that's why it was such a close race.) and started leaning left. We will never know of course, but I think the 60's might have been much differnt had he lived and won a second term. You may have Cleveland, but I'll take Teddy Roosevelt in exchange. Now there was the original progressive! If I don't see you around the forum before then you have a wonderful Christmas as well.  (17 hrs ago | post #266)

Name calling does little to change anyone's mind. C Lee writes well, and puts together a cogent and logical arguement. One which I can always disagree with and quite often knock down. I don't need to call him a name, and under most circumstances he doesn't take cheap shots at liberals. Hence my remark. It's a civil way to disagree, something I wish we saw more of around here.  (Yesterday | post #245)

As History explained, the X stood for the first letter of Christ, and a mas.. a form of Mass or Eucharist. It, like Happy Holidays started out perfectly innocently, until people who didn't understand the meaning behind it got bent out of shape.  (Yesterday | post #244)

History is correct. When I was a kid there was a fuss over using Xmas as a shorter form of Christmas.. kinda like this discussion. A lot of people thought as you, that it meant taking "Christ out of Christmas" so it's use fell into disfavor.  (Thursday | post #228)

C Lee, Sorry, but historically we were never intended to be a "Christian Nation" in the same sense as say England.. There is indeed a national church there, and it does happen to be a Christian denomination. The Founding Fathers, being mindful of the blood that was spilled following the establishment of that church deliberately chose to avoid such a thing. We are no more a "Christian nation" than we are a Jewish or Hindu one. The great blessing in all that though is you are free to be your faith, I am free to practice my faith, my Jewish friends theirs and even the Baha'i friend I have to practice her's. I have Christmas cards from back in the 50's that say Happy Holidays.. this was not even a discussion until a certain political commentator chose to make it one a few years back to sell a book. Because I grew up in a predominantly Jewish neighborhood I know all the Chanukah songs as well as I know Christmas Carols.. learned how to play with a dreidel too! Understanding that nearly every faith on earth has a major holiday this time of the year enriches, not diminishes the joy of the season. It seems silly to me to use the birth of the Prince of Peace to start a fight over how one expresses greetings. Do as you please, and let everyone else do the same.  (Tuesday Dec 15 | post #161)

I quite agree with your points about Otis's point.. but again, just what do I or Saint have to do with this?? We are discussing religion, to a point, not politics, so while you are telling Otis to play fair might I request you do the same?  (Sunday Dec 6 | post #36)

REAL ID Act could mean real problems for N.M. travelers

On the whole I agree with you but, the borders issue is so much more complicated that the immigration issue. No one has taken notice, but the "illegal " immigration took care of it's self for the time being, nothing like no jobs to stop it. The issue will be back in good times, but if the times are good enough many won't care. Borders on the other hand are woefully unprotected. Canada for example. There are literally hundreds of back-roads where one can cross with nary a Border Patrol in sight. Why does it matter? Because in 2000 there was a terrorist plot that was interrupted and those who were involed entered the country not from Mexico but from Canada. Have you seen anyone trying to do anything about that border? No, and you won't because the average voter is more worried about undocumented workers than border security. And don't get me started on the ports...  (Sunday Dec 6 | post #56)

Now wait a minute.. I don't mean to hijack this thread, but my good screename is being trashed here. Just when have I ever demanded anybody agree with me? Like all good liberals I treasure free speech, even for those I disagree with. I suspect you don't care for my point of view, and find it easier to blame the messenger. As to the article, I was spellbound reading it. Wonderfully written.  (Sunday Dec 6 | post #31)

I am SSOOOOO confused. The right wants secure borders, doesn't want anyone from any other country to come to this country.. but when a measure is enacted towards those goals they complain that there freedoms are being taken away. Just no pleasing some people.  (Sunday Dec 6 | post #48)

Random Acts of Kindness

OK easier than I thought it would be... To read the start of the Little Wing story go to page 17 of the complete list of threads.. towards the bottom titled Local burn victim seeks assistance from community That's where that started... We've lost the thread where someone suggested that RAK's needed a thread of it's own.. I assume it was a reader started one, but a nice one about a couple who paid for the dinner of another couple at Furrs... And one other comment.. Truth is some of the chit chat is of it's self a RAK.. Parents helping parents.. even a recipe or two... Wonder if hillbilly ever made those pergories? It was hotter than blazes when I gave him the recipe but it's just right now.  (Tuesday Dec 1 | post #1289)

MoM I have a stary recollection that there may be some post else where on the little wing saga... It started with a story in the DT.. just_Nobody wanting to help and Firefly offering to see if she could locate the help.. Pretty soon the story moved over here.. I kinda got just_nobody yelled at by asking him what was happening with her, so this was the safe place to talk about it.. I'll try and find the threads for you.  (Tuesday Dec 1 | post #1288)
