Adding rapids to the Grand River
If they took out the dam at the fish ladder the river would become a swamp its only about 4 foot deep from the dam to Ann Street and the further you go up stream its also very shallow. If we would have a drought it would dry up. (7 hrs ago | post #6)
Sorry to be so cynical, but why do we need guidelines from government? And whats the next guideline they come up with? Here's one, they are going to ban texting while driving, this is one I think I can kind of go along with, but how will the ones observing know what you are doing with your hands, or will the guideline be that both of your hands have to visible at all times sounds like a good guideline to me. No ostrich here my friend, I don't live in a bubble of government protection, I know the dangers. I know the dangers of everything I do, I think most people do. Studies here, consensus there, theories, speculation mean nothing to me. To go off topic here a little. I used to have a three wheel ATV lots of fun never got hurt, but they were banned because over a I believe a ten year period around a 1000 people died on them, it wasn't the machine it was the person on the machine. Same with quad ATVs there are calls for banning them now. People die, people get sick who have never smoked a cigarette in their life. You know around 300,000 people die every day around the world for one reason or another and no study theory or consensus can change that fact. Banning smoking in bars, banning guns, banning motorcycles or any other dangerous activity will change that fact. (19 hrs ago | post #116)

Thinking about moving to Grand Rapids?
Grand Rapids in general is a decent place to live. I have lived here all my life I am 54 years old. Like all medium size towns it has its problems, but not as bad as some bigger cities. Crime rate is fairly low, but jobs a scarce, but it depends on what you are looking for. Its fairly easy to get around Grand Rapids once you learn where the main roads are and learn a few shortcuts. Michigan is a beautiful state though right now the economy is not very good unemployment is high, but we still have places where urban sprawl has stayed in check and there are lots of places to go to get out of the city, and of course we have the Great Lakes (23 hrs ago | post #4)
I don't see the difference our nanny state mentality and the political correctness that goes with it is all part of the SHS and smoking in general is bad, I disagree eating to much salt is bad eating to much sugar is bad etc. etc. I am just sick and tired of the government trying to pass laws to protect us from ourselves it is asinine. It should be left up to the individual if you don't like smoking establishments don't go in its as simple as that. And my other question is if tobacco is really so bad why not just ban it altogether it makes no sense the incremental ways they are trying to banish certain things from society. Whats with the head touching? Is he getting subliminal messages? Maybe his brain is ready to explode from all the lies hes told and the contradictions he spews. (Yesterday | post #4)
Gore is a nobody wanting to be a somebody and his only option is to be a hack. And whats with the way this guy speaks he sounds like Mr Rogers with a mouth full of sand. Back to the ice caps and the ice sheets how do we know that at this period in time they are not supposed to melt. Saw a picture of one those huge icebergs off Australia logic tells me that when these things start to melt they will cool of the water surrounding them, so what happens then no one knows. I mean all that cold water may change weather patterns. Could be good could be bad, Life on earth what a beautiful thing to behold. And these fools with theories and computer models want to try to stop it. (Yesterday | post #2)
I was thinking of some other things that should also be banned from restaurants . How about salt, from what I here to much salt is not good for you, supposedly it raises blood pressure and we cant have that, probably part of the health care bill, oh and sugar, this dastardly element causes all kinds of health problems with the obesity and the diabetes and how hyper it supposedly makes children. Ban vending machines in work places. I mean these machines are all filled with salty and sugary things. So I say ban it or raise taxes on it so it becomes almost unaffordable. Cynicism intended. Its easy to be cynical in this era of political correctness. (Monday | post #110)

Adding rapids to the Grand River
I love kayaking, but what is this desire for some of these folks to do it in downtown Grand Rapids? I really don't get. And where did the money for this study come from? the city is broke at least that's what they keep telling us. Where does the DDA get its money. Watching the video I can understand a little why these dams need to be removed I guess if the guys who fish down there think its a good thing to get rid of the dams its okay. Just seems to me there are plenty of other places to Kayak though. (Monday | post #3)
Time to give up on Bob folks. (Sunday Dec 13 | post #97)
I wonder does this ban include VFW and American Legion halls? Everyone smokes in those places. (Saturday Dec 12 | post #46)
As far as the children thing I didn't want you to think I was an inconsiderate bassturd. I respect people for the most part, if there is no smoking in a certain area I don't, and I know that lots of people don't like it. But back to the subject banning smoking in bars is ridiculous its a bar not a hospital or school or an office. There has to be a time and place for people to just relax and enjoy what they do and if they enjoy smoking and having a drink what better place than a tavern. And if the rest of the people in there are doing the same thing whats wrong with it? Man I hate being redundant oh well. And the other thing I am getting at is whats next. Smoking has been made out to be such a taboo. Whats the next thing "they" will try to protect us from? Whats the next taboo? I am sure some self righteous congress person will come up with something. But I just hope it is something you enjoy and then maybe you will get the message. (Saturday Dec 12 | post #44)
