Chicago Blackhawks say they are clean in signing of Marian Hossa

Actually there's more options than just taking the fall for the full cap hit for a non-productive player at the end of these contracts. First off, it's unlikely they will still be playing and with the exception of the Pronger deal (which I'm still trying to figure out), the cap hit will come off the books when they retire. If they are still playing into their very late 30s or 40s, they can be bought out or traded.  (Aug 4, 2009 | post #22)

Report: NHL investigating Chicago Blackhawks' contract with Mar...

I'm sure the Wings fans' response to that will just be the same as we've heard for them losing Hossa and Kopecky: "Who cares? He s*cked anyway. WINGS 2010 STANLEY CUP CHAMPS **** *CHES!!!!" meatheads  (Jul 31, 2009 | post #70)

Report: NHL investigating Chicago Blackhawks' contract with Mar...

Months away from real hockey and yet we already have Wings fans trolling up the Blackhawk board! BH Down - Thanks for all the good luck wishes! You're a better sport than I, what with all my ill wishes toward your franchise. Looks on paper that the Wings have taken a step back this offseason. Worried are you? You should be. Regardless of how the front office of the Hawks looks (which is, admittedly, embarrassing), the team on the ice is going to be very good.  (Jul 31, 2009 | post #67)

Report: NHL investigating Chicago Blackhawks' contract with Mar...

Huge difference between those examples and this, pal. The examples you pointed out were on-ice rule changes. Where's the precedent for the league disregarding something related to the CBA? This is a bunch of garbage. How can Bill Daly say that this is the "first of the long-term contracts that took a player out past the age 40"? WHAT!?!? Zetterberg? That contract takes him beyond 40. Franzen? That contract takes him beyond 40. This is a bunch of BS. If they wanted to prevent things like this from happening, why the heck did they negotiate the CBA to make the cap hit the average yearly salary? dcd - if the $5 million fine would go against the cap and they would lose draft picks, then yes, that would be a HUGE loss, much to your delight.  (Jul 31, 2009 | post #26)

New Chicago Blackhawks winger Marian Hossa has shoulder injury

Well at least during these 4 months of rehab, we can all continue the Havlat vs Hossa debate! Look, I loved Havlat, and he was great when he was able to stay healthy, but the fact of the matter is, he is in MN now and we have Hossa. It's nitpicking and pointless to choose the better player (on-ice) when they are both healthy. You can make a valid case for either guy, but Hossa is our guy now. I wish Marty well in MN, but I also hope that nobody remembers Havlat once Hossa debuts in December.  (Jul 24, 2009 | post #64)

Haha, yeah I saw that they put up that Madhouse on Madison sign. Not sure how I feel about it.  (Jul 23, 2009 | post #42)

Yeah, it does stink that they weren't offering the 21 gamer in anything but the 100s, but I understand. That's the price you pay for success. I'd rather go to 9 games and watch a Cup contender than to go to all of them and watch a stinker! Plus, we got Foley and Eddie O when we can't go. Doesn't get much better!  (Jul 23, 2009 | post #39)

I've been posting a bit during the offseason. I did not go to the convention this year, though after all the drama preceeding it, I wished I had! I went last year, and had fun, but figured it couldn't be as interesting as that first one, so I took a pass. Big mistake! I will definitely not be passing up next year's! Unfortunately, I'm not going to be going to as many games this year as last. We had the Mikita plan last year, and bought single game tickets for about half of the rest (about 30 games total). We debated going full this year, but passed. Another big mistake since we couldn't really afford the increase in price for the 21 gamer this year (not complaining, just don't have a ton of money right now). Settled for the 9 gamer, but will definitely be going to probably another 10 or so. We switched from Section 313 too, but I think I will stick with the same screen name! I also went to the Training Camp Festival last year and did the 10K rollerblade. That was pretty fun. I might get in on the street hockey this year.  (Jul 23, 2009 | post #33)

You think Pittsburgh knew too? They had no problems with offering him a long term contract. If this is going to linger, I would rather him just get the surgery and miss the first 2-3 months of his LONG Blackhawks career so we can just put this in the rearview mirror and have a 100% Hossa (though a less than 100% Hossa was still able to put up 40 goals last season!).  (Jul 23, 2009 | post #26)

Wow, lots of nonsense posting going on here. Everyone just take a deep breath. We're going to be just fine. And first of all, where in the article did it guarantee that Hossa will miss the first few months of the season? That was IF he has to have surgery. Did anyone read that he is trying to avoid surgery by rehabbing? Even if he does miss the first few months, not the end of the world. They should be able to get to December or January without him. Maybe that will give the Hawks a chance to better evaluate their up and coming talent, such as guys like Beach or Aliu to see if they can afford to trade a guy like Byfuglien, rather than having to rush to trade away salary. How about having a fresh Hossa for when the season really starts to crank up? Could that be a positive? Everyone needs to calm down.  (Jul 23, 2009 | post #25)

Blackhawks' Jonathan Toews more relaxed in captain role

Yep, exactly. Of all the injuries Hossa could have had, he had to have a shoulder injury! The irony! What a ridiculous offseason this has been.  (Jul 22, 2009 | post #16)

Yep, read that too. Probably not the end of the world if the worst case is he's out until December, but this just looks so brutal from a PR perspective. The Hawks just can't stay out of the news!  (Jul 22, 2009 | post #13)

I believe what Nick meant is that those bonuses were already figured into the cap calculator. If they don't hit them, then they won't count against the cap, but that's unlikely. dcd is just parade rain. Always on here preaching his gloom and doom. Same old, same old.  (Jul 22, 2009 | post #12)
