Deer season

The "Wars" will never be over. Eisenhower warned about the dangers of the Military/Industria l Complex over 50 years ago, but no one listened. War is big business, and keeps a lot of people in key Congressional districts employed. Never mind that it takes the lives of a few thousand of our young people...we have plenty to spare. Even if this stupid government gets out of Iraq, they will find a way to stay in Afghanistan for the next 5 or 6 years, and they are already laying the groundwork for involvement in Somalia. We don't manufacture much in this country anymore, but we can sure prop up our economy with guns, bullets, and bombs. Look at how much money the B2 Bomber has brought to Ike Skeltons District...and we need the B2 like another hole in our heads.  (Saturday Nov 21 | post #4)

Deer season

Ammunition is in short supply everywhere. Even Midway, up in Columbia, has most of its stuff on backorder, or in short supply. Three reasons...first, these lousy wars have a lot of the manufacturers working overtime to keep the military supplied, and Second, the Obama Presidency has caused a wave of gun purchases and ammunition hoarding, and Third, this rotten economy has a lot of people concerned about rising crime...so they are arming themselves.  (Friday Nov 20 | post #2)

Crime in Columbia??

Excuse me?? I've read your response about 3 times, and still can't discern your point. Are you from this country? Did you go to school here, and did they teach English in that School?  (Oct 2, 2009 | post #4)

New texting law goes into effect

Cellphone usage while driving should be banned for everyone...at all times. It is worse than drunk driving. I have already decided that if I am ever hit by some clown playing with their cell phone, I am going to sue them for every penny they are worth. Phone company records can easily pinpoint the exact times they were on the cell phone, should they try to deny it.  (Sep 4, 2009 | post #3)

Crime in Columbia??

Is crime becoming a problem in Columbia? Watching the evening news, it seems like the first 5 minutes is consumed with reports of shootings, robberies, drug busts, and now, street gang idiots spray painting graffiti on peoples houses. What is going on in Columbia? Is Columbia trying to compete with St. Louis and KC as the crime capital of Missouri?  (Aug 11, 2009 | post #1)

Shop Stover

We got up a few mornings ago, and quickly discovered that the refrigerator had quit working. This Never happens in the Winter when a person could store the food in the garage, etc. while shopping for a new appliance. I quickly figured out that the compressor had quit working, and it would cost more to fix than the fridge was worth. Rather than running all over central MO., to the big stores, we went over to Bescheinen in Versailles first, and they had a nice unit that seemed like a fair price....plus they would deliver that afternoon for free, and take the old fridge. That iced the deal, especially since the big stores would take 2 or 3 days to deliver. When we got back home, I checked Sears and Lowe's on the Internet, and found that we probably saved at least $150 at Bescheinen, when you factor in the delvery and haul off charges from the big stores...plus Bescheinen offered a 3% discount for cash...something the big stores Never do. We bought our washer and dryer from them 5 years ago, and if they continue to offer these good prices and superior service, I see no need to run all over the place when a better deal is just a few miles away. Satellite Internet

Thanks for the info. Yes, Windstream seems to only be interested in taking in revenue, without building anything beyond the immediate area of the town center. WildBlue is cheaper, but they seem to have awful reviews on the Internet. HughesNet gets far better reviews, but there are still a lot of dissatified users. For the price HughesNet charges, I would like to get as many local opinions as possible before I commit. I figure I'll make a move after the first of the year. I've had it with dialup that goes to sleep every 45 minutes....and asking Stovermo to check it out is like talking to the wall.  (Dec 4, 2008 | post #3)

Satellite Internet

Does anyone here use Satellite Internet...WildBlue, or Hughesnet? It seems like the phone company, Windstream, has no real interest in providing DSL service beyond the immediate town area, and we have all heard the poor service excuses offered by Stovermo.com so many times that we have them memorized. If anyone is using satellite, I would be interested to hear your opinions...re--reliability, speed, etc. Thanks in advance.  (Dec 4, 2008 | post #1)

Should we allow GM to fold?

Detroits problems have been decades in the making. They had a wake-up call during the oil embargo of the '70's, but management wasn't smart enough to recognize it. While the foreign companies began to concentrate on practical, reliable, fuel effecient cars, Detroit hung its hopes on giant SUV's and pickups. The price of oil has permanently burst that bubble. It will take 3 to 5 years, and 10's of billions to make Detroit competitive in todays car market. Any quick bailout is little more than a pipe dream. The unions are not blameless either. They have been unreasonable with some of their demands, and have damaged themselves with shoddy workmanship, and in some cases, downright sabotage. My all time favorite "Union" story was the group they found suspending coke bottles and cans in the rear quarter panel on Chevy Novas, and Buick Apollos at the GM Fairfax Plant back in the 1970's. This created a permanent rattle in the car, until a dealer had to remove the rear seats and panels to find the problem. How many repeat buyers of GM products did this destroy???  (Dec 2, 2008 | post #13)

Morgan County Sheriff's Office nabs four most wanted

If there is an excess of criminal activity in Morgan County, it cannot be blamed solely on the Sheriff Department. Any police officer would get discouraged if after catching a criminal, the Prosecutor does not apply the full letter of the law, and/or some soft headed Judge gives the thug Probation. Marvin Opie only seems to prosecute someone when he sees some personal advantage. The number of convicted drug felons, and sexual predators living in this area should be a concern to everyone. So long as these misfits are allowed in the area, the reputation of the entire county will continue to suffer.  (Nov 30, 2008 | post #7)

Two teens dead in Morgan County wreck

Driving these fairly narrow and winding country roads demands the highest levels of skill and concentration. There are very few road shoulders, and the lanes are barely wide enough to allow two trucks to pass safely. Then, there is the ever present danger of a deer jumping across the road...especially after dark. Unfortunately for most young people, they seem to think that once they get a couple of hundred miles under their belt, they are ready for NASCAR. That is usually the time that they wind up in an accident. If they are lucky, it is just a fender bender, and they get their first real world lesson in driving. Others are not so lucky, and wind up as a statistic. Most kids fail to realize that a car is as deadly, or even more so, than a loaded gun. Very few walk away from a wreck at highway speeds.  (Nov 23, 2008 | post #37)

Obama economic plan aims for 2.5M new jobs by 2011

Politicians are always long on promises, but very short on performance. If Obama makes any progress on this current mess, he will have to work a miracle with the 532 idiots we have in Congress. Most of them are on the payroll of the Lobbyists...who really run this country.  (Nov 22, 2008 | post #13)

Study: Banning fast-food TV ads could dent obesity

Obesity is the solution to future Social Security problems. Most of these fat asses won't live long enough to collect Social Security. However, on their way to an early grave, they will bankrupt the nation with their medical care costs.  (Nov 21, 2008 | post #228)

Fear of a Black Planet. Will there be a Race War or Peace on Ea...

There is most certainly a major war coming. It will make all previous wars puny by comparison. It will not be a war of nation against nation, but one of the "Haves vs. Have Nots". It is unclear, at this time, whether Overpopulation or Climate Change will be the trigger, but it will probably be a combination of the two factors. The world passed 6 billion people about a year ago, and all forecasts are calling for that number to double by the end of this century. Couple that massive increase in population with rising oceans, changing weather patterns, and a massive relocation of populations away from coastal areas, and the die is cast for job loss, hunger, and disease on a scale never before seen on this planet. Sometime in the latter half of this century, all Hell is going to break loose.  (Nov 21, 2008 | post #394)
