Very well said! Ron: I ended my time in the military here for several reasons. 1: I have family here. 2: I like being able to sit out in my yard or my neighbors yard or their porch and not worry about a drive by shooting or a dope deal going down next door. 3: I like to be able to leave my door unlocked at night as do my neighbors, while you on the other hand can't leave a CD in the common area without some sticky-fingered creep walking off with it and his friends covering him for it. That doesn't happen out here. I can leave my keys in my car and leave it unlocked for weeks at a time. Nobody will touch it. 4: I like being able to go see my neighbor without them diving for a gun. 5: I like the country air. Try getting that in the city. 6: If I need help I need only ask for it. There are any number of people out here who would give me anything I need, gas, money, food, clothing if need be. I had a fire back in 1999. The outpouring of help was enormous, and I hadn't even asked for it. On top of that it was a car fire. People gave me everything I needed to get another car the same day, and it wasn't any $100 junker either. It was a very nice, well maintained car in great condition. Even the insides of the vents had been cleaned. If there's some way I can help someone I just do it. I don't ask 'what's in it for me'. In return, if they see me in trouble they stop and help and ask for nothing in return. These people aren't friends, I don't even know most of them. We just help each other. That's the way it is here. Now if you want to be mugged several times a week just go over into the quarters. They'll oblige. Out here that doesn't happen. Any violent crime that takes places out here is between parties that brought their problem here. In most cases they get caught or transferred to another duty assignment before they're caught, but they do get caught most times. There's been only one instance of robbery out here where I am. That was so long ago most people don't remember it. Can you claim that on post? Or in your big cities? I don't think so. Most of the nay-sayers about places like this are people like you. Shallow people who are in pursuit of the excitement of the moment.  (Monday Nov 23 | post #352)

Then get off your duff and do something about it. Nobody gives serious attention to a whiner but if you face them with a serious proposal to get something done maybe they'll fall in line.  (Monday Nov 23 | post #349)

You can do better? By all means, put your plan together and submit it. Just get off your a$$ and do something besides complaining and bellyaching. Maybe if you took an active interest in what's going on you might actually realize there's more to keeping an economy going besides moving in big businesses that are only going to fail because there's no financial base to keep them going. You seem to have all these ideas about how to get this done, get to it.  (Sunday Nov 22 | post #346)

You're welcome. I've been here since late 69 with a side trip to Germany in the mid 70's and army training for Fort Leonardwood in 78-79 before getting stationed back here at Fort Polk. I was in El Paso before late 69 and Germany and Virginia before that. I'm originally from Tyler Texas.  (Wednesday Nov 18 | post #339)

PDQ is long gone. Red and White grocery building is still there. I think there's a pawn shop in it now. The Gibson building is still but Gibson's is gone. The building now houses a Dollar General, a pharmacy and I'm pretty sure there's a medical diagnostic center there. There was a lot added to area where Gibson's was. There's a Market Basket (formerly Stanley's Super D. There's also a Family Dollar and several other places. Holt's Grocery is long gone but the Burger Bar is still there.  (Wednesday Nov 18 | post #337)

About 300 feet from where I do. What does that have to do with anything? You think anybody who lives here can't do well or something just because you have this wonderful prejudicial view of anyone not measuring up to your narrow minded standards? I ran across a bunch of small minded people such as yourself when I was in the military. Always harping on what things should be like but never taking the initiative to change anything. You've shown me that hasn't changed. It's too bad that it's people like that that are running the country.  (Tuesday Nov 17 | post #333)

From the way you state it you sound like one who has actually gone out and looked, but knowing what a bitching, whining crybaby you are you probably believe everything you see in National Inquirer. For you r information my niece is 22 and is very happily married to a man who is not related to ANY member of her family other being her husband. And yes, they don't have any kids and nobody looks down on them for it, and yes they were born in Louisiana, hold good jobs and bring in a combined income that you can only dream of.  (Tuesday Nov 17 | post #331)

[DOWN WITH SUDDENLINK!] Sounds good to me. The only reason I still have it is because satellite doesn't have the speed required for my VOIP phone to work. It needs a minimum of 128 kbps and satellite provides about 58 kbps. DSL is out of the question as I don't have an existing phone line and the price to get one put in is way too high.  (Wednesday Nov 11 | post #327)

Every time you use a swear word to address someone by you show all of us how low on the IQ scale you are likely to be. In comparing you to others I know who swear in every sentence as you do you rank in the 95 territory. That places you below average intelligence which is 110-120. The top of the scale is 200 which is brilliant genius. I'm up here at 187. Care to join me? Then clean up your act.  (Tuesday Nov 10 | post #321)

[Funny life wasn't too mundane and boring in other places I have lived, why because they recognized the Soldiers as something more than their "money train" and had something for the families and single Soldiers to do.] As they did when Fort Polk was a permanent duty post. Since it's a training post now there's no point in supplying something that the army leadership doesn't want provided. Their words were 'Everything the soldier needs is on the post and we don't need anything from the communities'. So there you have it. That's why you don't have anything to do off post, big brother has supplied everything he thinks you need. Don't like it? Put in for a transfer. You have to freedom to do that. The worst they can do is say no.  (Wednesday Nov 4 | post #310)

Same for me. I've lived over half a dozen countries including a couple where the people have no idea what kind of freedom we have here. They like living under 'Big Brothers' ever watchful eye with next to no personal freedom and like it because they have lived that way their whole life and know of no other way. I chose to live here after I left the military and I like it.  (Wednesday Nov 4 | post #307)
