Police car in crash that closes Philips for hours
Northbound and southbound lanes of Philips Highway were closed for about four hours Sunday afternoon when a Jacksonville police officer responding to a call collided with a car that turned into his path. Both the officer and the driver of the other vehicle were hospitalized after the crash on Philips Highway at Shad Road, police said. Officer Michael Gaylon suffered severe but not life- threatening injures including possible broken bones after striking the car driven by Fabio Margariti, 18, which had turned left in front of the patrol car about 6:45 p.m., said Undersheriff Frank Mackesy of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. Margariti, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was transported to the hospital with critical injuries, said spokesman Tom Francis of the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department. Alcohol was not a factor in the accident, officials say. A pickup truck was also struck by the patrol car, but its two occupants were not injured, Mackesy said. Gaylon, who had his emergency lights on, was southbound on Philips when the other vehicle turned into his path. He was on his way to assist another officer who could not be raised on the radio during a traffic stop involving a possible stolen car. It was later determined that officer was not in danger. Gaylon, who has been with the Sheriff’s Office about two years, veered and struck a light pole in an attempt to avoid colliding with Margariti’s car, Mackesy said. Dana Treen (2 hrs ago | post #1)

Yulee baby run over in driveway, dies
Yulee baby run over in driveway, dies A 1-year-old girl was killed when she was run over by a car in the driveway of a Yulee house on Sunday, police say. Naim Dickerson, 19, was backing the car out of the driveway on Long Leaf Loop but didn’t notice Nylah Sakira Dickerson at the side of the vehicle, police say. Naim Dickerson’s father, who is the child’s grandfather, was leaving the house at the time and yelled at his son to stop the car, police say. The elder Dickerson took Nylah into a vehicle and headed to Shands hospital while his wife dialed 911. However, Nylah was declared dead by doctors at Shands. Police are conducting an investigation. Out of a chair and into the water
Out of a chair and into the water A free clinic gives the physically disabled a day of water skiing. By MATT COLEMAN, The Times-Union She looks at home gliding along the surface of the pristine water. Her only lifeline is a rope attached to the back of the swift-moving boat. She grips it as best she can. It's a good feeling - there are no physical constraints, and she is no longer tethered to the ground. "Not bad for someone in a wheelchair, right?" she said while drip-drying under a high-slung canopy set up by the water. "I just wish they'd have gone faster." Shannon Horne and about 20 people left their chairs on dry land Saturday and braved the boat's wake for a free waterskiing clinic designed specifically for the physically disabled. Brooks Rehabilitation sponsored the event at Victory Lake, and U Can Ski 2, a Florida company that caters to the disabled, provided the labor. Volunteers eased participants into chair-like rigs with skis and braced them for a water-splashed ride. U Can Ski 2 founder and professional ski instructor Ann O'Brine cheered on each participant from the dock. "Did you see what you did?" O'Brine shouted to a quadriplegic first-time skier. "They let you go, and you were on your own without any help." O'Brine has an intimate knowledge of her students' daily struggles. She has been in a wheelchair all her life after a bout with polio. A self-described competitor, the loss of her legs didn't halt her athletic endeavors. O'Brine won six national championships and two world titles as a disabled skier. "I always remember the looks on their faces when they put those skis on and hit the water," O'Brine said. "It's energizing to be able to give them that experience." Alice Krauss, manager of the Brooks Rehabilitation adaptive sports and recreation program, said outdoor outings such as waterskiing are sponsored monthly and open to anyone from the disabled community. Krauss, an occupational therapist, said the path to true healing occurs when the disabled are allowed to experience the full scope of life - including activities they once thought were physically impossible. Horne, 27, is a frequent participant. She was born with cerebral palsy, a debilitating neurological disorder that limits her motor function and keeps her confined to a wheelchair. The program has allowed her to compete with a rowing team, skydive and play full-contact sports such as basketball and rugby. Now she can scratch water skiing off her to-do-list. "I like to break the mold and do things people think a disabled adult can't do," Horne said. "My family never let me think there was something I couldn't do. It kind of bit them in the butt because now I want to do everything." (11 hrs ago | post #1)
