Barrow County Dumping Homeless on Athens?
I believe there was a logical explanation for the video the Athens PD claims to show Barrow LE dumping homeless. We have heard of no further accusations from Athens on this and the issue seems to have died. I don't believe we have a homeless "problem " here in Barrow. I see no evidence of this when I go into town. No pan-handlers. No broken people pushing their belongings around in shopping carts. Nothing to indicate we have a problem that would need to be addressed with grand plans like you propose. Granted, not everyone in Barrow is living on Easy Street. These are difficult times for many of us. Our dollar doesn't go as far with $4 gas. Some of this difficulty is not self-inflicted, but some of it is. How often do you see someone spend more money on cigarettes, beer, and lottery tickets than on gas or food. I don't feel sorry for people that throw money away. But hey, it's a free country and we can spend our money how we want. BethW, your assertion that the shelter is not doing it's job because the local police are shipping the homeless out of town is based on the belief that the accusations by Athens PD are true. How can you say that? How many homeless do you see around Winder? Do you know anything about the homeless shelter? I love how you arrive at some of your conclusions BethW. I think it therefore it must be true.... The sheriff's department (whom you relentlessly defend on these boards) said they are not dumping on Athens. Have you seen them dump homeless in Athens? You then conclude that you don't have a clue by saying you don't know the numbers. How can you say the shelter is doing a poor job when you admit you don't know what you are talking about? I think the last thing we need is more taxes. We already give more than is needed to effectively run government. There are already plenty of outreach programs for homeless people to take advantage of. Most homeless just want hand outs, not help in getting off the streets. Total losers. I'm not into investing in losers. The one exception I would make would be to homeless families or any situation where children involved. No child should have to live on the streets for any reason. This is getting ridiculous. Seems like once every week we have another fatal collision on our roads here in Barrow county. I've lived here for 16 years and can't remember anything like this.
