Should you be fined for not having health insurance?

Everyone is going to either become ill or have a loved one become ill during their lifetime. As a health care worker (RN) I see families devastated by illness everyday. I see patients daily that have to choose between paying for their medications or paying their bills. This should not happen in America. Take a minute before you respond and think for a moment what you would do if you became chronically ill or were injured and unable to work. How long would you be able to support yourself and your family. How long would your company keep you after your 12 weeks of FMLA ran out. Do you think you could pay the COBRA insurance payments (over $1000 a month in most cases). Remember you have lost your income. So how do you pay for your health care? How do you support your family? You can do everything right and play by all of the rules and lose everything because of an illness. I see it happen everyday.  (Thursday Dec 24 | post #23)

No you should not be fined for not having insurance but you should have to pay your hospital bill if you choose not to have insurance and it is available to you. Hospitals should not have to give charity care to those that choose not to be insured.  (Thursday Dec 24 | post #11)
