I just returned from a friend's funeral. On Columbus Day she was gived 6 weeks to live. She barely made it. I only share this to point out that we all could have received worse than was handed down at the DR fiasco. You have held the DA to the fire. You will do the same with the judge and Mayor when their turn comes. Meanwhile partner with a teen or a parent under stress and help them figure out a way to cope. Ask every county commissioner you see why the drugs are not leaving the county. Become visable at EVERY public meeting concerning how and where the tax monies - and the state and federal grants are being spent ON YOUR BEHALF.In other words - take ownership for your lives - and the lives of the people who live with you. You all have had a great idea for boosting the economy of Butler that does not involve the steel industry returning [That one ain't EVER HAPPENING!] So- throughout the holidays, between the football games and light hanging, talk amongst yourselves....and make Butler What You Want It TO BE. Good Holidays....Safe Travel..... (Nov 19, 2007 | post #830)

Good for you Butlerites [and friends]. Now that one is out - use this as an example forthe others, while lobbying the courts and state legislature to get tough on the laws. Why are so many small town DA's in the pockets of the powerful? Because the powerful have kids who screw up, just like the rest of us...and these power moms do not want junior to have to take any responsibility that might negatively effect the furure resume. Get to Harrisburg, get to the offices of your rep's and senators, be vocal each and every week, and learn what is important to these people who represent YOU in the state house. Most importantly, get to know their administrative assistants and converse with them often. People who are hears often gain influence and - hopefully - credability. Geed Luck...can't wait for the mayorial election !! (Nov 10, 2007 | post #760)

The RCC has been in the business of buying and selling forgiveness for centuries. Even aafter The Second Vatican Council in the 60's 'opened the window' and cleaned hose, many opportunities remained to provide plenty of room for "DONATIONS " that in enough time led to dispensations. Any organized religion is about money and ways to make it multiply. It is the only way to assure the continum. What was quoted about paid and laity and volunteers being obligated to report abuse has been civil law for years.[like with school teachers, day care workers, nurses, E.R. personnel] but also dance teachers, lifeguards...ANYON E who has 'cause' to suspect that a child, disabled person, and/or elderly person is being abused. Priests and bishops and higher-up's not are cited under civil law, as well as cannon law. Whether those mandates are carried out is , most often, in the control of the bishop's office. That could mean that someone in the office is taking hush money so that accusations do not hit the bishops desk, it could mean that the bishop chooses not to pass along the information, and it could mean that the family of the 'perp' has enough influence to keep things quiet. None of this is a pleasant picture, but it has happened in ALL religions and the threat of corruption is ever present. Therefore, the absolute NEED for elected finance boards and advisory committees is key in beginning the process of accountability.Any priest or pastor NOT PERMITTING these mandated committees should be immediately and loudly OUT-ED by the parish.A parish can be only as transparent as the parishoners demand - and that means personal involvment and committees and giving of time. It is the same for making and keeping changes in your local government, your state laws and your federal financial aid. Examine where the fed $$ go in your community and who controls that $$..... There is your power source for change. Thus ends yet another lesson in citizenship....sor ry for the ranting. I just am incredulous when people gripe about it but don't MAKE things change...That may also be why I do not live in Butler. I am known as an activist in my community and the locals here think that W. PA trains people to be like this... (Oct 23, 2007 | post #664)

Hello all To add to the comments about the RCC: The bishops et all are primarily bound to keep the machine running. They can not do that without priests out there in the trenches propigating the company line. If the criminals and pedaphiles were removed, then at least 10% would be removed - but would still be 'supported' by the church to whom they pledged their loyalty and self's upon their ordination. Those vows go two ways and , in effect, the church promises to forever take care of all the guys who join up [not so for the women, but THAT is a different conversation]. So, the higherarchy can't fire the troops without shutting even more parishes and angering even more faithful contributors. The RCC [like any true bureaucracy]has done several studies as to how to remedy this problem and the suggestions are always the same: Bring back the married priests and/or permit womem as priests. {BTW there are all ready married RC priests who jumped ship from the Anglican church when the Gay issues arose}. When the higher up's continually see the same results of these studies, they repeat their findings that the studies are flawed and go along ignoring the problem of understaffing. Centures ago, the priesthood was the only place a commoner could be educated. Maybe the bishops are awaiting another dark ages to fill the ranks once again. Yes it is a sarcastic view but a realistic one. I have worked within the church for change for 30 years now.[humm....chang e from within...learned about THAT in Butler...] Some places I see a difference. Some just won't believe that young men usually do not want a future removed from family life and children. Money - after all- is the final voice to the Bishops. As more catholice ear-mark their contributions directly to the charities they want to receive the funds, and not run it through the bishops office, the bureaucrats eventually get the message - and some do change !! Go to the court house records....although Butler County had a habit of sealing records in many cases - most especially when a juvenile was/is involved. (Sep 26, 2007 | post #3)

Hey, It is a long cold winter coming...someone has to fill all those hotel rooms [now that all the artists aren't there]. (Sep 26, 2007 | post #40)

BUTLER COURTS UNFAIR- DON RASELY
So what is the difference among pro bono, D.A., public defender, and court appointed attorney? Should [Does] a victim of a crime receive a "just minimal", "competent ", or "Stellar " prosecution, or is it assumed that the victim must have their own private attorney who works in co-operation with the D.A.'s office? Is court appointed representation only for the person charged? Were the fines levied against Don restitution for the victim's costs or were they only the 'court costs'? (Aug 27, 2007 | post #14)
BUTLER COURTS UNFAIR- DON RASELY
I don't know if it is true up there, but in VA, all trial lawyers are required to do pro bono cases, in their own area of specialization. Is the public defender and the prosecuting attorney for the county of Butler the same person?? Are parents with children in any of the Butler county Schools ready to rally the troops [more easily accomplished thru the PTA's] and demand better practices in education, in city management, [as in teach your children thru your own actions], and in empowering their children to speak up and be heard in their community?? You all tried to organize once Butler, but interest wained and fear took over again. Now that you have seen and heard the 'Butler brand of justice' for child molesters - maybe you will DO SOMETHING to change the town's legal practices for YOUR KIDS. (Aug 26, 2007 | post #12)

Dear Sad Song Many of 'us' who no longer live in Butler still have many ties to the city. And, some of us have planned over the years to retire there. Not anymore! (Aug 26, 2007 | post #378)

Doesn't it just stop your thinking for a moment to hear Don being refered to as a PROMINENT CITIZEN of BUTLER ?? Do you mean like the former Seceretary of Defense of this country? Do you mean like the hundreds of others who have spent their lives in service to their country and/or community ??? As if his ego was not all ready expansive enough.!! Now, who is going to supervise his contact with children? Must be the Mayor that is first in line. I hear that St. Peter's in Slippery Rock is in need of a new priest - I am sure Don has ordained himself by now and after all - he is looking for a job. Butler - you have brought it on yourselves !
