The Long Case for Office Depot
Mr Abramson is a supreme optimist. ODP is not fixable by Odland & Co. He is finished. It's easy to take a helicopter view by reading their PR reports. Here is an extract from the Frost Bites blog in www.proficiencypos t.com today: "Nothing is going well for Depot in the business supply division. And contrary to management rhetoric it’s all self inflicted and very little to do with a slowing economy. To remind readers, Depot have closed the hugely successful Viking brand in the US to the benefit of Quill/Staples; outsourced their core customer service functions; acquired and lost over $300m of sales when they took over Allied in NJ; fired 600 sales people in the US pre-Xmas and cancelled their January conference for 2000+ sales people in Florida. In Europe too, the Guilbert acquisition was mismanaged and all their quality senior management have gone with sales and profits well down. All in the interests of the ‘One Vision…One Brand’ globaloney Their Retail division too is weak. The stores look dull, drab, sparsely stocked and messy with little personality in evidence. Their copy and print section is the worst performer compared with Staples, Max and Kinkos operations. Finally, if the above was not enough they have recently announced that they will not be going ahead with 150 store openings this year. It is impossible to see any signs of recovery at Depot. They simply don’t know what they are doing. Expect the evidence for Odland’s ejection to get louder and LOUDER over the next few weeks." (Jan 20, 2008 | post #1)
