Tesuque eatery racks up violations
My aunt and uncle built that place in the 1930's. It was a 2-pump Conoco station and mom and pop grocery store. There was a one bedroom apartment in the back. I practically grew up there in the care of my aunt and uncle. I've never been able to go in since it became a restaurant, preferring to keep my memories intact. That wasn't exactly my first thought, but close. I was thinking more in terms of role models. Certainly the girls' behavior was way out of line. Why can't the selection committee make their choices based on what would be good role models for the young girls and boys who are sure to look up to this group as something to aspire to? In addition to the required heritage, why not interview them for tact, poise, etc.? In addition, selecting such obviously overweight girls tells the younger ones that it's ok to eat yourself into an unhealthy state. Not good all the way around (Oct 15, 2009 | post #75)

Fatal crash on Old Pecos Trail
A traffic light at Quail Run would be awfully close to the one at Zia. I think that in itself would cause problems. Right turn only would be a huge inconvenience to those of us who live in the area. Someone suggested u-turns, but that's probably more dangerous than left turns. Most of time it's not a problem turning left onto OPT. There are peak times, as with any major thoroughfare. I just avoid those times. The rare times when I can't, I just snake through Sol y Lomas to Zia Road and use the light. (Sep 19, 2009 | post #35)

Incivility? I think not. I can't recall any reports of violence in these gatherings. These people are exercising their rights of free speech and peaceful assembly. Think back to the anti-war protests and the horrible violence. The protests in Chicago at the Democrat National Convention. The violence in California when the gay marriage amendment was voted down. This is the second time this type of accident has happened in recent years. An older woman making an identical turn from the street next to the motel was killed in that one. I live in this area and have to make a left turn onto OPT to go north. It's scary at times. My only other choice is to go right, then right again on Rodeo to St Francis... a very long way around to get where I want to go most of the time. Since OPT became four lanes, the speeds have gone up exponentially. I think 45 is probably the right speed for a road of that sort, but it's not being enforced. (Sep 19, 2009 | post #12)

I don't agree that sex offenders should be "treated ". It's been proven that they can't be "cured", and the recidivism rate among those that have been caught and jailed is extremely high. There are those who say that they should be sheltered in some sort of colony (as opposed to prison), thereby more or less serving a life sentence. With this scheme the children of the world are safe from those. I think I agree with that. (Sep 16, 2009 | post #47)

I thought the stimulus money was supposed to be for creating jobs. Santa Clara Pueblo is getting $22M for expansion and refinancing a tourist center and Isleta another $22M for a tourism center. The construction jobs will be short term and the refinancing will add no jobs. At least Acoma is getting $8M for a manufacturing facility. WTG, government! Spend it like it's someone else's money! This is a bit off-topic, but I thought it worth posting. I've just started subscribing to "New Mexico Indepent", an online blog/newspaper on my Kindle and am enjoying reading it very much. It seems to be balanced in its coverage, which is very much appreciated. In this morning's edition there is an article that criticizes the New Mexican for it's lack of balance, not only in editorial content, but in general news comment.
