Study identifies cells for spinal-cord repair
Exciting stuff. I assume that these ependymal cells ultimately arise from pluripotential ectoderm cells. What journal did this get published in? (Jul 24, 2008 | post #2)
Think homosexuality is "wrong"?
I'm well aware of the incongruities associated with evo. It's a complex theory...so complex...that I think even our best naturalists skew it...(Dawkins...to name one). Not a bad quick-guide article though (May 2, 2008 | post #11521)
Think homosexuality is "wrong"?
Feel free to expand on that. I would like to hear an explanation...inte resting. I feel you're contradicting yourself by saying it's biological (nature) and then saying it exists in every person...indicativ e of homosexuality via nurture. I think a sane person will agree that not all people are homosexuals (I'm pretty sure that's not where you were going). Personally I think it's nature fascillitated by extrinsic sources of 'nurture'. Genetic drift can only occur for so long. Or possibly, maybe our "Selfish Genes" are fascillitating homosexuality for altruistic bennefits. Of course we're speaking in hypothetical terms. Think homosexuality is "wrong"?
If homosexuality is truly genetic...then over time...since those individuals cannot pass their genes on...homosexuals will eventually eliminate themselves. I don't forsee this happening...which is why I think homosexuality is a bit of both nature and nurture. This is...of course...all in theory (given a long enough time period). No hatred here. Think homosexuality is "wrong"?
P.S....nothing is ever proven. You can only support something...if you're thinking like a scientist. I believe you would agree with Francis Fukuyama. Me...on the other hand...think homosexuality is the end result of a spectrum of influences by nature and nurture...especial ly since it fits with the paradigm that we live in a "if-and" world (Apr 24, 2008 | post #5955)

Ionic air purifiers' dirty little secret: They don't do anything
Keep using yours...and enjoy that O3 that it emitts. Ozone has been known to be a carcinogen...due to it's toxic free radicals. Hey...atleast you rhouse will smell good! (Apr 24, 2008 | post #23)
Catching a glimpse of a black hole's fury
Is this comparative to the analogy of dropping a sphere into a body of water. I think that the black hole actually only emits particles for a limitted amount of time. If there's light being emitted...is it not being emitted at C (3.8x10^8 m/s...I think)? (Apr 24, 2008 | post #9)
Think homosexuality is "wrong"?
Didn't have time to read all 5398 posts...but did the "nature vs. nurture debate" come under discussion yet? May give some 'ammo' for both sides of the discussion. (Apr 24, 2008 | post #5938)

I don't know about the first part...but I think you're dead on with the latter part of your post. (Apr 24, 2008 | post #453)
Should evolution be taught in high school?
I think that about sums it up. (Mar 28, 2008 | post #11388)
Should evolution be taught in high school?
I really dislike debating with a creationist the validity of the Theory of Evolution. What it comes down to, you can't compare apples (Faith) to oranges (Objective thought). It's a waste of time and resources. (Mar 28, 2008 | post #11387)
Should evolution be taught in high school?
I would have to agree with your general point, because Darwin spoke of his weaknesses more than anybody. There are many types of mutations, and some do more than alter pre-existing biochemical pathways. Some organisms create their own biochemical pathways. For example...Beta-lactamase production by some 'mutated' strains of Staphylcoccus aureus (Better Known as your VRSA and MRSA strains). That could be debated to be a new, but simple, biochemical pathway. To me I'm not sure it's a mutation, as compared to genetic recombination phenomena. When we do our nucleic acid testing on various strains of S. aureus there is very little variation in the genomic sequencing of the loci we look at. (Mar 26, 2008 | post #11040)
Should evolution be taught in high school?
Ahhhh....thank you. I had somebody explain it to me. On track. (Mar 26, 2008 | post #11039)
Should evolution be taught in high school?
Yeah...very nice. Mutations are just one aspect of the theory. I wasn't trying to say that mutations don't fall in suit with "evolutionary theory", but the genetic diversity that arrises from GHC is enough for the theory to thrive. However many germ-line mutations occur durring Genral Homologous Recombination. There's a shady line, in which we genetic variation turns into a mutation. To me, personally, there is much ambiguity with the terminology at hand. (Mar 25, 2008 | post #10852)
