Dan, I have read the article and also have referenced numerous Bible quotations which cast doubt that the Bible condemns abortion as the Scripture teaches a fetus is not a person until it gets its soul 'quickening.' There are other passages that deal with the unborn and make clear in the writing that the unborn is not considered a person. I have listed and discussed most of those several times so I'm not going to repeat them all now however the commandment "Thou shall not kill" means murder and you can't murder something that isn't recognized as a living being. The professor of Christian ethics, whether you consider him an ethical person or not, is employed and by assumption his viewpoints are valued and supported by his Catholic school as they retain his services. His discussion on conscience is very enlightening. Dan, I don't doubt your faith is very sincere but there are other people in your church who disagree with you on a number of points. Discipline with belt gets hard response

Reading these comments about beating kids when they misbehave literally left me sickened. Parents need to instruct and guide their children. They need to model the behavior they want their children to imitate. Parents need to stop modeling rude, disrepectful, and arrogant behaviors. And when necessary, parents must let their children knew that certain behaviors are out of line. But beating 3 small girls with a belt is child abuse. Children want their parents' approval and will adjust their behavior to get it. There are many ways to communicate to a child that you disapprove of what they are doing without beating them. Beating only teachs children that the bigger and stronger you are the more you can impose your will. For young girls the message is when men love you they will beat you. I agree that too many parents today allow their children to be mouthy, disruptive, and disrespectful but the answer is to teach the parents how to parent effectively - and effective parenting does not need to include beating (especially with a belt!) your children. Children will work very hard for their parents' love and approval. Showing approval and recognition of good behavior when it occurs has repeatedly been shown to be much more effective in reenforcing positive behavior than reenforcing negative behaviors with beatings. Our children are the most precious things we have and deserve loving parents who guide them to become good citizens.  (Apr 8, 2009 | post #29)

What's with you and this re-take test business. No school evaluates their students solely on tests given by the teachers. These kids score well on state, college entrance tests, get all kinds of scholorships, represent their school in national competition, and go to some of the best colleges in the nation. The schools can offer motivated teachers who try to instill the love of lifetime learning into their students. For this to work, the students, community and parents must understand the value of education. In too many schools and communities the parents undermine the school, teachers, and value of education by not emphasizing how important it is. I have witnessed parents with combatative attitudes come into the school and challenge the school rather than trying to work cooperatively with the educators for the benefit of their children. Children imitate adults and if what they see are adults who do not place value, energy, time into informing and educating themselves, children will do the same, in school and after they finish school. The best schools are the schools where motivated, interested, curious children attend. It's not money, facilities, ratio of students /teachers, or competition. I have never met this man and I might be jumping to false conclusions however it seems he is frequently involved in suspicious or 'goofy' activities that just don't add up. If there is evidence that the fire was set with gasoline it should be presented; if the evidence is flawed then he should be cleared and the cloud of suspicion lifted once and for all. What's your point - every one knew what was going on in the economy. Obama told us what he intended to do while he was campaigning (that's why so many people voted for him) and he's doing what he said he was going to do. They are moving quickly because the situation calls for fast action. The only people who don't get this and seem unable to get anything done are the Republican congressional leaders who regularly call the press together for big announcements only to present the same old policies or as in the budget, a budget with no numbers. She says the most outrageous things - last night I heard her telling the people in her state to gather up their guns so they can fight the oil tax. Isn't that revolution? 'Contraception is not permissible'

If someone is having sex with a 12 year old it's call rape regardless if the child agreed or not. Unfortunately, many times the person raping the child is a relative or close friend of the family. In my opinion no child should be made to have a baby - if you have to accept that children who are raped and become pregnant have to go through the pregnancy and birth, then we are far far apart on the abortion issue. Boy I'm glad I don't have any teenagers!! I'm curious about the remark the 1st blogger made challenging the remark that if a minor possesses nude pictures of him/herself transmitted over a public network it is considered possession of child pornography. (I don't get into the body image and loathing rationale. These kids aren't sending nude pictures of themselves around because they loathe their bodies. Give me a break!!). Details of 9-year-old's homicide plea may never be known

This is a very strange case - the mother seems totally unsympathic to her son, calls him 'the boy', and then is seen laughing and joking with 'the boy' before the court is called to order. Also no facts are being released to the public - This must be a twisted perverted situation that would seriously scar the children if facts were made public. I really feel sorry for this kid. I know, I know, what about the victims...It's hard to say this because it sounds so heartless, but they are dead, now the state and family must deal with whatever tore this family apart.  (Apr 4, 2009 | post #6)
