Akron Council drops Lord's Prayer Washington group threatens to file suit over longtime practice By Stephanie Warsmith Beacon Journal staff writer Published on Tuesday, Oct 16, 2007 Monday was judgment day for Akron City Council's practice of reciting the Lord's Prayer before meetings. Facing the threat of a potentially costly lawsuit, council members said the prayer for the last time. Americans United for Separation of Church and State, a Washington, D.C., group, recently sent a letter to council threatening to sue unless the prayer was silenced. Council members met in executive session for about an hour Monday night to discuss the issue. Council President Marco Sommerville said they felt they didn't have a choice. ''There was no sense in putting the city in harm's way,'' he said. The recitation of the prayer has been a long-standing tradition for council one that most members didn't want to cease. In a Sept. 28 letter to council, Americans United said ''prayers are permissible only insofar as they are nonsectarian in other words, only if they do not use language or symbols specific to one religion.'' The group said prayers read by government bodies ''containing sectarian rather than ecumenical and inclusive language have repeatedly been held to be unconstitutional.' ' The group urged council to cease its practice or to ''ensure that the prayers are nonsectarian.'' ''By failing to do so, the council would risk subjecting the city to costly litigation,'' the group wrote, asking for a reply within 30 days. Council members consid ered having a different prayer every week to try to accommodate various faiths. Sommerville said they decided that would be too complicated. ''We tried to come to a consensus that makes sense,'' he said. ''There's no need for litigation that we know we will lose.'' Sommerville said most council members plan to say the Lord's Prayer together privately before their meetings. They also might develop an ecumenical prayer for council that can be recited. i still feel the only fair thing is to let business owners ESTABLISH, if they want their place to be a non-smoking facility, or smoking-friendly. put this back on the ballot with TERMS (instead of what was done on the ballots a year ago) (Oct 15, 2007 | post #5785)

yay, for smokers rights! everything is so communistic now! truly, after the vote last year (where i was not in state to cast my ballot), the stipulations were to put into action of not allowing private clubs to have smoking. that affected me bigtime (and my private club) after i got home. My sister IS intelligent, but didn't know about a checkpoint at the covered bridge in Everett in the valley this summer. We'd been to the Cuy. Falls riverfront Italian fest, and the checkpoint was basically set up for people coming out of Blossom that night. She and hundreds of people got waved into the parking lot that night to do the whole routine. She had had 2 beers, 4 hours earlier, but had not eaten anything. She passed the coordination part, but had been honest about the beer she had .... they thought, "well, you passed the stability part, but lets have you go blow .... blew a .08, got cited etc. .... she's 56 and never had a DUI etc in her life. had to do the 3 day incarceration at the holiday inn in hudson. not to mention round and round w/ the clerk of courts to get all that red tape through. Amen, amen, amen... yes, I will still love my boy where ever he plays. I'd met him at St. V's in his senior year, when my son was a Freshman. I could tell you of quite of few incidents, that just show he is reallllly a nice guy, great sense of humor, etc. We'll follow his career, no matter where he is! ... he's mah mannnn. you really DO need to get a grip. ... and again, "it's just sports".
