North Port police officer hurt in fight at Tampa bar

Hell yeh, I bet I could out run the most of them. I would think with their job they would have to maintain a level of physical fitness. I truly despise being inline at 711 behind an officer (NPPD or any other LEO) that's purchasing a Big Gulp and 3 packs of Marlboro Reds. Worst yet, when driving home one day, I saw a Highway patrol car in PC by the Town Center Mall have a vehicle pulled over. It was quite awkward as there were 2 uniforms - one was at the patrol car's passenger door while the other was at the so alleged perps car. The one at the patrol car, while in uniform was smoking. WTF. Officers should be held to a hirer level and defiantly should not smoke while in uniform. They should also have to qualify yearly in regards to running and staying in shape. It's just a job, but it's also a privilege to wear a uniform. This goes for Law Enforcement, Military, and any other entity that is of public service.  (Oct 5, 2009 | post #7)

NPPD has no internal investigations, that's why their all %@#$'d up and get away with this shit. I've tried to file a complaint. When I asked to speak to IA, I was informed there is no IA and I can only speak to a direst supervisor. A direct supervisor? They probably just fraternize with each-other and have a good chuckle. This is where corruption begins! No checks and balances!  (Oct 5, 2009 | post #6)

North Port Police Suck!

In my research, I spoke with a deputy of the Charlotte County Sheriff’s department; in that conversation, the deputy stated: “statute §843.02 is an ace in the hole, if an officer wanted – under this statute, almost for any reason, he or she could articulate a lawful arrest.” Justice is an idea that one should be judged as fairly as possible without prejudice. Society would crumble without this ideology as it is very important for citizens to feel a sense of safety from false imprisonment and receive their equal protection under the law. I have to give America credit - it does have a sense of justice; yet, America stands too tall and too proud of their justice system – as it fails every day. In society, past, present, and future, justice will always struggle to meet this standard as it relies on men and women with integrity. Most cases are plea bargained to a lesser crime prior to trial. This assumes one is guilty, and eliminates the prosecutor’s workload of trial and the defendant’s possibility of losing. In some cases, where a defendant may be rightfully innocent, he or she ends up pleaing with a safety net as opposed to being fully vindicated. Is this justice being served? I say not! After my plea bargain, I walked away with Adjudication Withheld and a few hundred dollars in court costs. The true sense of justice was not served; with more time and money, I would have brought the courts to their knees and at minimum, the officers would have been reprimanded for I was an illicitly accused citizen in the grasp of a justice system that was UNJUST and set forth by one single person that was hired to protect me.  (Oct 5, 2009 | post #76)

…and Justice for All. Inquiry of innocence is not whether one is or is not; it is a question of does one have enough time and money to prove it. So called peace officers litter our streets portraying an image of “Serve and Protect;” on the other hand, at times, while hiding behind their cloak of justice they call a badge – hides a potential for dangerous, violent, sadistic, and vile behavior becoming of anyone. Police officers are only human and do make mistakes; they can make decisions based on emotion, prejudice, and unforgiving retribution. Where there is power, there lays opportunity for abuse of that power. With knowing there is potential for such misconduct, is justice truly blind? It is not! In history, there are many examples that support such an accusation; herein, lays a story I will share… It was a Sunday night on September third, two thousand and six; Labor Day was tomorrow, so I decided to go out to dinner at Applebees. When I arrived, I was glad to see my favorite seat was available. My favorite bartender, Melissa, was also there and she recalled my choice of drink and offered a menu (it felt like walking into an episode of Cheers.) After enjoying plenty of food, drink, and my fair share of camaraderie with local patrons, it was time to go. Only after paying the bill, tax, and gratuity, I left the building. As I walked to my vehicle, I pondered my sobriety. In no way did I doubt my ability to drive (only two short miles) home; nevertheless, I couldn't ignore my ability to walk – so I walked. Autumn was approaching; still, it felt autumn was already here. In two thousand and six, Florida was in a long drought; unlike this year’s Labor Day (which was still hot and humid.) Before I left the parking lot, I grabbed a sweatshirt from the back seat and secured my vehicle. I proceeded to cross State Road Forty Five (better known as forty one) and began to walk home. No sooner than a few minutes into my late night stroll was I abruptly approached at high speed by two North Port Police Department cruisers (only stopping a few feet from me.) Once stopped, the officers opened their door, stood behind their door, and barked orders at me (orders I could barley understand.) At this time, I was stunned, confused, and fearful, for I knew I did nothing wrong. Being cuffed and put in the patrol car was not my plan for the night. These officers took me back to Applebees where I was greeted by more police and patrons that I had sat with earlier that night. From the conversations I could hear, I figured out someone didn’t pay their bill and someone fingered me as that person; however, I had a receipt to disprove such a claim. Unfortunately after proving I had paid, I was still under arrest. At the time, and to this day, I know this arrest was unlawful. I was detained under Florida’s statute §843.02 which is “resisting arrest without violence.” I believe I was charged with this so called crime because I utilized my right to remain silent. The officers did not like this. In a Probable Cause Affidavit, the officers articulated the support of my arrest with jargon only known to lawyers and law enforcement. Faced with an alleged misdemeanor, I represented myself in a court of law. It took a year (of court dates and research) before the charge was dismissed and adjudication was withheld.  (Oct 5, 2009 | post #75)

Sarasota Cop - Paid Time off while an investigation is completed?

WTF - are you kidding me? If that were you or me; we would be arrested and in jail now. How come a cop gets a unfair courtesy that we would have not? I have been beaten by cops and they do this all the time, and when they do such things - they should be treated the same; put him in jail. Defiantly - don't give him the courtesy of being suspended w/ pay. C'mon! Those are my and your tax dollars.  (Jul 20, 2009 | post #1)

North Port police ask city for a mobile command bus

Sorry, not to offend you but I wasn't getting statistical, just point out an example of where they are abusers of power. Being arrested for an 843.02 is BS, this is an ace in the hole for them. It's all how they write the report and I am sure this is where and how I was arrested. Not for a crime, because they can. Justice? Yeh Right! More like a waste of time, or anyone that gets charged w/ an 843.02 (To sumerize, wasted tax dollars and time)  (Jan 21, 2009 | post #8)

I cant recall exactly where I read a NP Forum post but it was the same deal, and it was a white truck. This was last year. The hard part is w/o a physical description the police cant do a damn thing. We cant expect they pull over every white truck. If you file a report w/ the make model and year and a description of driver and passenger and affirm they were the ones you seen on the night of the crime. Maybe they can stop them. Defiantly get a Lic. Plate #, maybe that will give the officers a name and cross reference it with previous reports/allegation s. You'll still have to pick them out in a line up. I wish the police were super heroes but they are not, we have to do some of our own foot-work to help them out. They need Probable Cause to proceed, your complaint and sworn statement is their P.C. Good luck and I'm sorry you were robbed, maybe don't install expensive equipment, or ensure if you do, have a good alarm. Idea: ADT has these new wireless alarms, you can install a motion detector in your vehicle, trailer or shed if you like. Bamm, you'll be protected. Assuming the vehicle is at least in your driveway.
