god is not real!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The issue is that we have to believe enough to ask FIRST. THEN "real belief" comes? - There, I just asked. Nothing happened. (Wednesday Nov 25 | post #7942)

Easy. It wasn't an explosion. Unless a several million year unfolding is an explosionAnd I mean evolutionI don't think any of us think there is a single perfect thing anywhere in existence. None of us care what Darwin or anyone else may have said (regardless...you are quotemining). It is irrelevant to scienceThere isn't a purposeWhy would I want to explain thatOk but I am aware that your goal posts will move. This explanation has nothing to do with evolution either so why you would give evolution a shot from an explanation of earth formation is beyond me. - The earth formed from the collisions of other planetoids and space debris. The energy released from these collisions and the subsequent meteoric bombardment heated the early earth until the entire planet was in fact molten. The heavier elements (metals) moved down toward the center of the earth. This spinning central core of molten metal in the earth is what gives us our magnetic fields ie poles. Over time the surface of the planet cooled as the bombardment eased. Many asteroids and meteors contain large quantities of water. As the planet cooled early rains developed which eventually managed to cool down the crust allowing surface water to form. The molten earth under the crust remains heated due to several processes including pressure, nuclear decay, and friction. (Wednesday Nov 18 | post #76)
Should evolution be taught in high school?
Yeah, we hear the same threats from every other religion. (Wednesday Nov 18 | post #30946)

Well, defect is a bit harsh. The reason why so many mutations are termed deleterious is simply because these are the ones which cause diseases. Other mutations which don't cause disease are simply called normal variants. Examples include the caucasian ability to digest milk and white skin which allows improved formation of Vitamin D. If you put a caucasian in the tropics they would rapidly dehydrate, suffer from hypervitaminosis D and likely get skin cancer. - My reason for the mucosal patch idea is because during early fetal development humans, and all animals above amphibians, grow their lungs as an offshoot of the esophagus which lengthens and then balloons out to form the lungs. There are diseases associated with the failure of complete separation between the two such as tracheoesophageal fistulas which used to routinely cause babies to drown in whatever they ate OR starve to death. By all means, if you know of the exact origin of the lungs I would appreciate a reference. (Wednesday Nov 18 | post #53)

The lung FIRST presented (conjecture here) as a gas absorbing mucosal patch in the proximal GI tract which enabled gas exchange and hence improved survivability without immersion. These sorts of changes are found in evolutionary development (see Endless forms most beautiful). While I am an atheist I have no problem with people preferring the presence of a deity to the absence. My issue is when people attempt to insert this claim into science. Science doesn't require or dismiss the presence of a designer and inserting either of these claims would derail the scientific process. (Wednesday Nov 18 | post #39)

Cambrian "explosion " is explained. Plants do evolve. Where do you get your claims from? AIGWe don't care what Darwin said especially when taken out of contextWe don't accept evolution "because there is no alternative". We accept it because it explains the observed facts. This is what science is. IMHO you need to read more about the theory BEFORE you attack it. BTW I like your screen name. (Wednesday Nov 18 | post #38)

As a biochemist, an MD, and Clinical Associate with Tuft's U.S.O.M, as well as a lifelong learner, I have been fascinated with science since I can remember. My interest in editing this page is prompted by the attacks on science being pushed by fundamentalist religious sects. Not knowing what else I personally could accomplish, I find relevant news articles and defend science in open debate. The efforts to clarify science is complicated by the misconception that evolution is inherently atheistic, despite all of the various religions which boast top notch scientists who specifically endorse evolution.
