Street Smarts: Out with the stop sign, in with the roundabouts ...
This is really a problem originating with having a two way bike path next to a two way road. The same issue you mention exists with the current configurationFrom west to east I use Beach Street (from Bay to the Wharf intersection, using the left turn lane to turn left on Pacific). I use West cliff bridge when riding east to west, bypassing the intersection at the Wharf altogether. (3 hrs ago | post #105)

I'm seeing two lanes in the diagram. Perhaps you could try counting again? http://www.cityofs antacruz.com/Modul es/ShowDocument.as px?documentid=2495 (3 hrs ago | post #104)

In any case, the current roundabout design preserves the current two-way bike path (8 hrs ago | post #101)

It still seems like the roundabout will be superior to the present intersection, even with pedestrians. To enter the roundabout, you need to check that the cross walk in front of you is clear of pedestrians and then to see if there's a gap in traffic to your left (and only your left... no need to check for traffic from all directions, or to check if the cross walk on the other side of the street is clear of pedestrians). When leaving the roundabout, you check to see if the crosswalk walk is clear, and then leave. Doesn't that seem simpler than the current configuration? (8 hrs ago | post #100)

I find it safer and more convenient to use the two-way road than the two-way bike path (8 hrs ago | post #98)

I think the idea behind the roundabout is to increase the flow of traffic through that intersection. You'll need to slow down for the roundabout, but many times you won't have to stop for it. (Sunday | post #94)

The problem is a that the city put a two-way bike path next to a two-way road. That two-way path doesn't solve any problem and only introduces more problems no matter what happens at the intersection. (Saturday Nov 28 | post #91)

I don't see cyclists entering the roundabout as the rest of traffic does as a problem (Friday Nov 27 | post #88)

The two way bike path (particularly the two way bike path along the two way section of Beach Street) complicates any sort of configuration here, whether it's the current four-way stop, a roundabout, or a traffic signal (Friday Nov 27 | post #86)

I expect I'll have an easy time of merging into a gap in the slow traffic in the roundabout. I expect it will be easier on my bike than in my car (Tuesday Nov 24 | post #70)

I think the round-a-bouts will be an improvement over the current left turn lane for cyclists. All, this talk about "entitled " cyclists. Cyclists are allowed to ride in the street no matter how many times they're yelled at by school bus drivers to ride on the side walk at that intersection. Talk about "entitlement (Tuesday Nov 24 | post #69)

The intersections at Depot Park and at the Municipal Wharf are big enough. "One roundabout will be placed at the Depot Park intersection of Washington Street and Pacific Avenue. It will be paid for with stimulus funds. Another roundabout will be installed at the entrance to the Municipal Wharf and will be funded by developer and traffic impact fees, Schneiter said (Monday Nov 23 | post #25)
