The child could have been sick or probably fell asleep in the parents bed and then he had brought the child into its own bedroom--- we do that with my daughter all the time... Regardless of what time the 4 yr old went to bed its still an awful tragedy... I remember when I was growing up we could leave the windows open at night and the doors unlocked- I always make sure my doors and windows are BOTH locked now-- never know who will climb through or attempt to break in- scary world nowadays. I almost cried when I read this today. Pity the father died- I was hoping he would have to go through more physical and emotional trauma....
