Heritage High graduates plan to lift the world

This was a great graduation. I heard one of the best High School graduation speeches ever. Congratulations HHS c/o 2009!  (Jun 15, 2009 | post #8)

On Teddy Thompson, state should leave well enough alone

Mr. Squire's positioning is worth consideration. I do believe that a criminal justice system that wrongly convicts someone, causing a person to spend years in the slammer, should be addressed. While we all agree that anything run by humans is imperfect, that does nothing to lesson the pain of spending time for a crime you didn't even commit. In the 7 years that Mr. Thompson was learning how to commit crimes even better, he could have very well attended school and went on to lead a productive life. We will never know. Why not pay him for a mistake that the system made, he himself must pay for his own mistakes? If he wants to act like a fool after essentially being given a 2nd chance, then his freedom will again be compromised. Forcing the system to pay will ultimately force the system to change...look at big business...when money is on the line (or the loss thereof), we start changing the way we do business. Look at Chrysler. It's no difference in the CJS. If I am every wrongly convicted, someone is going to pay me in some way, shape or form.  (Apr 30, 2009 | post #24)

David Squires: Time to bring 'white privilege' lesson home to i...

Surprisingly, Squires gives an interesting perspective on race relations. Often (even in his own column) he points the finger at black people for being the cause of racism but yes, white people own equal responsibility. Just look at the previous posts and you will see how skewed some people's perspectives are regarding race. A previous post talks about why do blacks sit together in the cafeteria. As an undergraduate at a predominately white college in Va, this was often the topic of conversation in social circles. Blacks were accused of racism until the question was posed to some white students as to why they sat together in the cafeteria. How do you really feel about your black coworker in the next cube? What are your feeling about the black students in your class? Are you less tolerant of their behavior problems? The list goes on. by the way, I am always wary of those who say, "I don't see skin color". Yea right.  (Apr 16, 2009 | post #141)

Vick wants a reality TV show

He needs to do something to pay off the debt. It's one of those things we would hate to watch, but would just tune in out of curiosity.  (Apr 15, 2009 | post #5)

Cell phones banned from Hampton middle schools

Kudos to Hampton School Board! As a parent of a Middle Schooler JMMS, I find it appalling that the PTA was pushing for these children to have cell phones! As a member of the PTA, I was annoyed by this stance which would only be a distraction to learning and a disruption to the teacher. These kids can barely keep up with their school issued laptops! Citing safety and security reasons, I wonder if those parents advocating for these cell phones recall years ago when cell phones were not needed in their own class rooms. Somehow during and emergencies, I was able to be contacted as a 6th grader. After school (yes, I was latchkey), my parents never failed to reach out to me on the home phone. I make sure my son boards the bus in the morning. When he gets home (approximately a 1/2 hour before me), he calls to inform me of this. I don't understand the mindset of the parent who feels that a 7th grader needs a cell phone at school...or that a 7th grader needs a cell phone at all...oops, now I am really stepping on toes...  (Apr 15, 2009 | post #30)

A free Vick would be an economic stimulus

What is the whole point of this article...what does economic stimulus have to do with Vick? Yes, I am tired of the news stations reporting about this but he did do the crime so he is subject to the legal system (and all of its inequalities) just like any other criminal. I have compassion for his family (as I do of the other family members of those left behind), but again what does that have to do with anything? Are you serious about this article or is this a joke? So glad I cancelled by DP subscription.  (Apr 9, 2009 | post #119)

Proposed halfway house creates stir

It always amazes me that everyone wants the problems with drug use and alcohol dependencies resolved, then when it comes to implementing the plan, we say, "Not in my neighborhood! " Where then? Maybe these individuals should be placed instead in the drug infested neighborhoods so that they can have even more access? Not. Why not work with the organization to develop a plan that works for both parties?  (Mar 30, 2009 | post #5)

Man, shot down near Phoebus High, dies at scene

It is so obvious that someone (on every blog) will post comments that incite hatred and racism. Why even bother responding to some individuals? They will not become more enlightened because of your attempt to educate. In fact, they thrive off of your attempts to counter their ridiculous positioning.  (Mar 30, 2009 | post #100)
