Jesse Jackson Backs Obama for President

You aren't asking alot, but it doesn't seem to happen to this day for MANY people and Sharpton is one of the people who are trying to help. Don't give him to much weight when it comes to what is NOT being said, because he can't cover all of the cases where there may be injustice. If you want race to be ignored and look at individual behavior, people needn't bring up Al and Jesse ALL OF THE TIME. I know they are in the news, but they are not the only people in the news. They are on T.V. alot, but I hope that is not the only place people get their news. There are plenty of other black voices that have something to say. If you only focus on the sensationalists, you usually only get a small view that is usually based on the dramatic points of a topic.  (May 3, 2007 | post #232)

Logan, these were rape cases. The reason why civil rights leaders went to the rescue was to make sure that her race didn't get in the way of the trial. Many times (countless times) white have gotten away with crimes because of the people they commited the crimes against. Civil rights people just want the law to be served equally. If race is a facor is is usually a negative, not a positive. The race issue needs to be addressed in this day and age, so we DON'T repeat history. Sharpton didn't convict anyone in either case, he only stood by the individual while vowing to protect there rights. Sometimes people make false claims about the crime, but that doesn't mean they should get a fair hearing. If you look at all the cases where people were NOT given fair trials due to their race, sex or anything else, you will see that the list is much longer than the two people you have come up with. Maybe the reason why Sharpton doesn't apologize is because he believes what he was told by the alleged victim. The people did not go to prison for their offenses, so what is the crime? There are too many innocent people IN prison, to worry about a few people who ALMOST went. Again...those Duke players aren't completely innocent of wrong doing and I have heard him (Sharpton) say he made a mistake in the Brawly case (which would be an apology). That is more than Diallos and Louimas got from the police here in NY. One one sodomized and beaten the other shot to death, neither were armed or threatening. The score is at least even, but something tells me you still want to have a beef with Sharpton and JJ and I can't control that. I just know they don't speak for black people. So I wish people would stop making references about them to other black people and just see and treat them as individuals trying to do the best they can. In the past racism played a HUGE role in criminal activity against blacks, so if it is changing then that is one less thing to be imprisoned for, but it doesn't OK the crimes nor does it make the suspect immune to speculation.  (May 2, 2007 | post #228)

If you pass down a lie it becomes truth if it is stated as fact. It doesn't matter how many times you repeat it, but who you say it to. They will repeat it. Cristopher Columbus discovered America...right? Or was it Vespucci? (get my point?)  (Apr 30, 2007 | post #219)

Black, Latino drivers fare worse in traffic stops

I'd like to see those stats. Because the conviction rate doesn't say how or why. But I bet if it did there would be another discrepency in the rate of incarceration, which is another study I've seen. There are just too many coincidents to be shrugged off. The only thing I would say is that the black and latino communities need to recognize the disparity and prepare themselves for the likelihood of being arrested and being put in jail. In other words, know your rights - you may be able to stay out of trouble or at least jail. Maybe criminal justice should be taught in the communities that you feel have the higher percentage of violent offenders. These numbers might go down. I know gun posession is a crime in certain areas where people are murdered almost daily. But how is someone going to defend themselves when the cops won't? Alot of guys that are packin for protection get arrested and obviously in greater numbers because of there environment, not there actions.  (Apr 30, 2007 | post #5)

FOR BLACK MEN ONLY.

Now that's real. And I stand up with that. If I have offended people on here before...I apologize. But I will ALWAYS have your back on the issues of race. We should lead by setting STRONG examples and involving the younger generations in our efforts. This is a great thread.  (Apr 30, 2007 | post #62)

Black, Latino drivers fare worse in traffic stops

I don't know where this logic comes from, but it HAS to be in EXTREME circumstances. People can get themselves in trouble if they interact with the police in a negative way. If they are already mad or sceptical of the police during a traffic stop, this may lead down a bad path nearly every time using your logic. It sounds like a group of black kids is more violent LOOKING than a group of white kids. I understand your beef with the stats and their true meaning, but the disparities don't lie, when it comes to searches leading to arrest. Maybe more blacks and latinos should be educated about their rights, so they aren't subjected to the desires of the police.  (Apr 30, 2007 | post #3)

You show me where they have promoted racism and then you have a point. But don't think for one minute you are going to find it without bending the truth or by projecting your ideals. If a group keeps you down by saying you're inferior and then you respond with superior speech of your own. It seems that would be in retaliation. These IDEALS don't come from the unknown. So why are you picking sides in that fight? Have you always believed in the former, so the later is indecorous? If so...you are displaying that dreaded racism yourself.  (Apr 30, 2007 | post #217)

why do american men do this???

Like Madonna in Playboy? No. Although if you must shave, please keep doing it regularly. The 5 day stubble can make for a pretty rough go at it.  (Apr 27, 2007 | post #96)

To all the mothers...

I would tell my friends the same thing if they said that to Sassy while hiding behind a mask. I have no problem being your friend. If I was hurtful you, it was because I was defending Sassy and giving you a taste of your own medicine. Don't like it?...Don't dish it out. You know how I am on here.  (Apr 27, 2007 | post #62)

Hip-Hop Summit Calls on Community to Stop Insensitive Language

Give me some examples and MAYBE I'll believe you. The NAACP is called racist too, so why bring THEM up? "ANY OTHER GROUP"?? How many groups do you know of, because there are groups representing every type of ethnic background. IF YOU LISTEN or READ you may find out what they believe and what they are saying about issues pertaining to them. Whether it is racist or not is beside the point, because it IS or it ISN'T. The double standard is that when an issue is brought up by a minority group it is scrutinized and judged in public, and usually on television, as a racial issue. Most of the times it is a civil or human issue. And like you said these groups want to empower the people. Well (I hope) you are a person too. These little battles are being fought for you as well me. We just may not need the help as badly, but it doesn't mean the fight is not just. Calling out the NAACP as a group of hurt is simply ignorant. The group is trying to help out people who have been disenfranchised for the most part. There are other groups that do the same thing for other people, so they must be recognized as well. Singling out one group is just spiteful.  (Apr 27, 2007 | post #22)

Hip-Hop Summit Calls on Community to Stop Insensitive Language

Why do people think this is a free speech issue? You can always say whatever you want, but there may always be consequences to what you say in CERTAIN places, like airports, the radio, Television, movie theatres, etc. Quit bitchin' about your freedom of speech. Nothing has changed except for the fact that the people who don't like the language are speaking up AND being heard by their fellow consumers. Popular entertainment that is degrading will be purchased less and less thus changing the market. This is your capitalist country at work. Deal with it.  (Apr 25, 2007 | post #16)

I see you are a slow learner. Free speech IS NOT PROTECTED over the public airwaves. (i.e. you can't say certain words on the air) If you don't see the difference now. I guess you never will. I won't even address the Sharpton/Jackson comments because they have nothing more to do with this than you and I.  (Apr 25, 2007 | post #15)
