LOL, once it leaves your hands it is not your money. By your example the money I hand over for purchasing an item from you is still my money and I still have say over how it is used. Besides, do you really think the 1% could make the money they do if there were no government services available? Would they be willing to pay for the roads, how about that brand new sports stadium, oh and lets not forget the police and firefighters and a standing army. Frankly the taxes paid to the government help ensure a stable environment to do business in.  (Jul 26, 2008 | post #1132)

To be honest at this very moment - nothing can completely replace oil. But that isn't a fair question given the current infrastructure. A better question is, what can ultimately replace oil in the near term for [insert use here]? For example, with the breakthroughs occurring in solar technology and thermoelectric materials solar light and solar heat could begin to replace fossile fuels for the same price as power sources for homes (central or distributed) in about 3-5 years.  (Jul 26, 2008 | post #1131)

Frankly I do not trust power being centralized in the hands of a few men only responsible to a corporate board or a minority of the citizens either. Let me ask you something do you think we would have the most powerful army in the world right now if we left it up solely to the states? That was tried early on under "The Articles of Confederation " and was a miserable failure http://bensguide.g po.gov/9-12/docume nts/articles/index .html. But I do agree no one group, whether it be government or corporations, should have too much influence or power.  (Jul 26, 2008 | post #1129)

Probably no less blind than what you were when you "pulled the lever" for Bush. You pulled the lever for Bush right? I mean you do seem like a Bush lover.  (Jul 25, 2008 | post #823)

Ok so punish the masses because of a few abusers right? You think corporations don't use their army of lawyers to abuse the current system? How did it really protect consumers from predatory lenders? Did the lenders pass on the savings resulting from reduced risk? Do you like one party's ability to change the terms of a contract by a simple 30 day notice especially when you had been abiding by the original terms?  (Jul 25, 2008 | post #189)

I think I know the answer to this but - how do you feel about a lender's ability to change the terms of a contract by simply sending you a 30 day notice of its change? Frankly I don't care for it. I think that the receiver should be able to respond by saying the terms are as they stand. One side should not be able to change the terms without the other side being able to say no and without necessarily voiding the original terms.  (Jul 25, 2008 | post #188)

Do you not understand the government's definition of income? By the time the wealthy write off all of their duductions of course their income is going to look less. Also, many of of the wealthy claim no income at all - that's because they had no income as defined by the IRS. However, this does not mean that they didn't make any money they just just didn't work for someone to do so.  (Jul 24, 2008 | post #895)

Do you think high wage earners are liars? Do you think none of them used statistics to get where they are? Lots of people use statistics to obfuscate and misdirect (look at our current administration). No one side of the argument has exclusive access to the truth and frankly I am tired of people who can only think in absolutes. Its time for some nuance. However, please answer the question - why should the top 1% (based on wealth)of the U.S. not be required to pay 90% of the cost to run and protect the U.S.?  (Jul 24, 2008 | post #888)

I've seen it come from both sides of the argument. But I'll have to say the ones coming from the left are not nearly always as crude as the name calling from the right.  (Jul 24, 2008 | post #882)

Personally I think it is the latter. Oh and nevermind the fact that by being able to say they control these new leases the value of their company goes up, meaning share prices goes up. They do not give a fig about actually drilling for oil they just want to be able to drive their stock price up (erego bonuses in the form of stock options) by being able to say they control the leases to that oil. That's a lot cheaper than actually drilling for it.  (Jul 24, 2008 | post #878)
