Native American nonprofit receives $800,000 affordable housing ...
I can understand David's point that it's exclusionary to non Natives, and in a perfect world we'd be able to wave a magic wand and all become instantly "equal"- but that's not the reality of Native life as it's been over the past 100 years. Remember, Natives were handicapped by discrimination, lac k of education, and basic bias of white society- it's great to say "assimilate, " but it's not as easy as it sounds when your entire culture has different values than the white culture currently in control and has suffered from generational alcoholism and poverty. If Indian gaming and housing grants improve the plight of Natives then I'm all for it- we'll only have assimilation when we have equality of opportunity, and Native self determination will provide individual Natives with opportunity. Now I know "equality of opportunity" will be attacked as being unfair because on the surface it's not equal at all, but the reservation system where Natives have been warehoused is what's been unfair. They have carried an anchor in the footrace to affluence, and by simply telling them they no longer have to tote that anchor doesn't provide equality- the anchor was heavy enough they're far behind in the race, and dropping the anchor won't help them catch up. I'd much rather see a Native housing grant for 600k than a 600k grant for the fire safety, or NCO, or soup kitchen scammers. (Thursday Nov 26 | post #21)

UHS pot arrests lead police to parent's medical grow
Man if I knew how to handle the whole "war on drugs" I'd run for office, but I have no clue- On the one hand there's more pot being grown in more counties throughout the state than ever before, so a first step might be standardized enforcement on a statewide level, be it legalization or a more Draconian approach. So far the Draconian approach hasn't worked, judging by the number of drug criminals in prison, and medical marijuana is mostly an end around to legitimize commercial cultivation...lega lization with no restrictions will only make us more of a target for the quick buck rip offs and low lifes, so maybe a process that registers growers and oversees their "industry ", like we have with most other agricultural products, would work. The "delivery " side could be in dispensaries that are also licensed and taxed, with age restrictions in place. That might be a better solution to the way it is now, but like I said, I have no idea how to get the jeanie back in the bottle. (Monday Nov 23 | post #260)
I kinda like the sound of leaf blowers on a Sunday morning at around seven AM- it's soothing and relaxes me right back to sleep. On my birthday my wife got up early and cranked up the leaf blower underneath our bedroom window and it was like trumpets from Heaven. (Monday Nov 23 | post #5)

There is no more "heavy industry," people- not this side of China, anyway. Guinness and his whole "Timber will be back and we'll need that site" overlooked the lack of heavy industry is now structural, not cyclical- and it won't be back anytime soon. (Sunday Nov 22 | post #8)

County, sheriff, sued by medical marijuana growers
Actually you're typical of alot of people who supplement their incomes with a few plants- I'm not passing "blame" on you, it's tempting and easy money. Just out of curiosity, what'd it cost you in court and attorney's fees? (Friday Nov 20 | post #153)

Yep- they'll spend four million bucks for a speculative land venture then lay off a half dozen workers. Because you guys voted for them. Makes me glad I'm not subject to the Khmer Rogue policies of Phil Baldface, Mari Rodent, et. al... (Thursday Nov 19 | post #6)

So if a native buys non Indian land it automatically becomes Indian land and is no longer subject to the same rules a white would have to follow? BTW- At the risk of being branded a racist, you guys are wrong about taxes. Natives on the reservation are exempt from California income taxes yet still draw California AFDC benefits if they qualify. Between them and the pot growers we have an awful lot of free loaders around here, don't cha think? (Thursday Nov 19 | post #42)
