Ruben Rosario: Violence against women: just too much
HEY! How are we supposed to know, and bake you a cake, and know how many candles to light on it -- if you don't give us more notice than this???? HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ZEN! From Castanote & me. (12 hrs ago | post #201)
Face it: NFL WILL get new stadium
Saint Paul has a 35-acre tract of former 3M buildings just east of downtown, and there won't be any major developers building multi-billion dollar complexes there any time soon. Why not build a Vikings stadium there? There is great freeway access, plenty of local roads as "escape routes," and a town that has tired of always playing second fiddle to Minneapolis. Tax-Increment Financing (TIF bonds) could pay for some or all of it. A pro stadium would generate a great deal of revenue -- there MUST be a creative way to pay for it with its own revenues without directly involving taxpayers. It will take time to clean up this brownfield. I wager the Vikings would agree to extra time in the Dome if a deal was sealed and serious work was under way on their new home. It would be worth the wait! (Sunday | post #9)

Thank you for clearing up the authenticity of the earlier post, since it wasn't submitted while logged in. I used to have trouble with someone who used my name, with a Saint Paul ISP, to say crazy things (well, crazier than I would) in my name - - and the folk I was in dialogue with had no way of knowing if I had gone off the deep end, or what. I promptly registered a handle, and no longer concern myself with wannabes. I would still like to see what measures you suggest for tackling the national debt. I get you didn't like my suggestions -- fair enough. That was predictable. Surely you would like to share some of your wisdom here, for all to see -- please don't withhold yourself when your Country needs you. (Sunday | post #324)

Maine's referendum on gay marriage law is too close to call
I am simply being politically pragmatic here, Zen. I don'w want to open the floodgates of the "slippery slope" argument against legalizing same-sex marriages. It is my sense that any movement to legalize polygamy in America is DOA -- there is virtually no tolerance for it. I don't think it is Bad nor Evil, but to some folk it would rank with legalizing heroin sales in elementary schools. It is wise to choose one's battles carefully! On a more historical note, in my wild and crazy youth I once toyed with the idea of a 3-way relationship. I had two intimate girlfriends, that had met a few times, and floated the idea with them. One was open to discussion, the other would not hear of it. End of that story. Today is no different: I can't imagine Castanote entertaining such notions for a millisecond. I say if others can make it work, they should go for it -- just don't seek the imprimateur of Marriage. That is not going to happen. (Sunday | post #521)

Assuming that this is the REAL IO, and not an impostor (lack of registration noted): Chastisment noted. How interesting that you decline to engage in a real discussion, but eagerly jump back in to offer admonishment. I can only conclude that what interests you the most is playing the Blame Game, and sitting in Judgement of others. How ordinary! How typical of most Conservatives who post here. How Reverent of the right wing you are! (Saturday Nov 21 | post #318)

Why allow someone you clearly dislike to set YOUR standard? I agree with your assessment of "The Master," but somehow refrain from descending to his level. Once in a while, he actually says something of interest and I respond -- but I ignore the petty BS. I have choice in the matter. (Saturday Nov 21 | post #316)

Great idea -- just talk Americans into working for $2 - $3 per DAY! And that would be for a 12-hour day with one 10-minute break, 7 days per week. That is the competition American workers face in the global economy. We need to work smarter -- NOT longer and harder for less. (Friday Nov 20 | post #306)

Hey, I am not fond of the guy, either -- but this is just so damn childish! He makes many very debatable points -- please stick to debating the points, and not him the person. Even if he won't stop the immature BS -- you are big enough to stop it by not stooping to his level any more. Let conservatives be the low spots on these threads! (Friday Nov 20 | post #301)
Maine's referendum on gay marriage law is too close to call
Sure, as soon as I am crowned Emperor, I will make these changes -- and more. :) But seriously, I apologize for attributing the "pets" facet of the opposition to you -- that was another very Christian opponent. The point remains that your search did not disclose organized groups attempting to widen the definition of marriage beyond adult same-sex. Therefore, the "slippery slope" argument is bogus, because only opponents keep it in play to argue against. I do not favor expanding Marriage beyond the inclusion of same-sex unions. While polygamy may work in other societies, and the 3-way combinations you mention may unofficially "work" for those in them -- these are not issues I care about nor wish to engage in politically. While there is division regarding same-sex unions, there is little division in Americans' aversion to polygamy. (Friday Nov 20 | post #519)

Thank you for setting us straight on the relatively paltry amount expended on foreign aid. I thought it was higher, but nowhere near 25%. What are your thoughts on facing and reducing the national debt? We are avoiding the Blame Game, and looking for non-partisan or bi-partisan ways to take on this monster. Surely you have a few bright ideas to share! (Friday Nov 20 | post #287)

I was wondering if all the other conservatives were just going to let Irreverent One have all the fun with the token Liberal! WOW! Your list is breathtaking in its scope. Eliminate county government? Wouldn't it make more sense to eliminate municipal government, rather than duplicate county functions in all municipalities? How many mayors, city councils, police chiefs, et cetera do we need in a crowded metro area? Of course, none of these local proposals would have any impact on Federal debt/deficits, but it is fun to imagine. Have to agree on the elimination of ethanol subsidies. There just isn't enough fresh water to produce enough ethanol to make a sizable dent in oil imports. Elimination of Foreign aid sounds great superficially, but I don't know enough about what it provides to pass judgement on your idea here. Elimination of those perqs for Congressional people would make a difference, even if only by setting an example. I don't know how much of a savings this would be. Thanks for jumping in with your ideas! That was the whole idea of starting this discussion. (Thursday Nov 19 | post #284)
Hoffman accuses ACORN, unions of stealing New York election
I am not fond of his ad hominem style, find that it only increases the already-deep divide between the sides. Immature ravings are the price we pay for freedom of expression on these pages -- if I could censor him, what would prevent me from censoring you? Nobody wins! BTW, the Liberal won. The alleged Conservative Mandate was an illusion, given extra heft by two illusionists -- Palin and Pawlenty. Believe in them at your own risk! (Thursday Nov 19 | post #59)

Your attempt has a very narrow focus -- government programs that I deem unnecessary or outlived. While that is an area of great promise for tackling the national debt, it is not the only way to tackle it -- it is so HUGE, it will require a mulitfaceted approach. Are you not able to consider any other approaches? Apparently the only item I mentioned that met your criteria was SDI, and you had very little to say about it -- you don't appear to mind if we continue dumping millions or billions into a rathole designed to counter a threat that no longer exists. You don't consider that trimmable waste? Where do you get this "...disdain and obsessive dislike for the defense department?" I am upset that American soldiers are dying from shoddy work done by poorly supervised contractors in Iraq -- and this is "disdain? " Well, it IS disdain -- FOR THE CONTRACTORS. I read of other contractors brazenly fleecing the DOD, knowing that there are too few inspectors and auditors to catch them wasting our tax dollars -- and this is "obsessive dislike?" Well yes, this is obsessive dislike -- OF BRAZEN WASTE OF TAX DOLLARS. It seems to me that I am sounding like a conservative here, and you are occurring as rather apathetic in the face of real problems. Unless they fit your tight definition of "unneeded gov't programs," you are not interested. We need to look for as many ways to work on the debt as possible. Since you appear obsessed with the issue of Unneeded Gov't Programs, why don't you share your list of those that should be un-funded? If mine are not good enough, yours should be magnificent!
