Scam of the Month: Ponzi scheme thrives on victim's greed
You have to feel empathy for anyone caught up in a Ponzi scam...up to a point. However, the old adage "there is no such thing as a free lunch" should make an individual wary about any venture that promises a large payoff without any risk involved. The elderly are so vulnerable to this sort of scheme. Anyone who preys on them should be penalized to the full extent of the law. (11 hrs ago | post #4)
My worst habit? Reading your column, Joy. I'm considering joining a self-help group to help wean me from it. (Yesterday | post #4)
Letters: No need to reform insurance
With all due respect to Stella F. McKenzie-are you for real?? Simply because YOU and YOUR HUSBAND are covered by Medicare does not mean that the vast majority of the population has adequate and/or affordable health coverage. While I'm delighted to learn that YOUR family is protected, what about those of us who are paying huge $$$ for medical insurance or those who are uninsured?? Perhaps you'd be wise to think about someone other than yourself, Ms. McKenzie. (Saturday Dec 5 | post #8)
Fatal traffic accident in Watsonville
IMMIGRATION! Sorry "hmmm" but it is rather strange to flee the scene of a fatal accident, doesn't it?? (Nov 4, 2009 | post #3)
Carl Bergstrom will hopefully NEVER be allowed to practice medicine again. Perhaps when he is let out of jail, he'll be shunned by the community and spend his final years penniless and without family, home and friends. His egocentric, smug attitude will be his eventual undoing... (Oct 30, 2009 | post #2)
Wilkes Bashford closes Carmel store
Wilkes Bashford inundated me with pamphlets and postcards for months after they opened, but the slick, glossy advertisements never enticed me in to take a look. The shop obviously appealed to the "well heeled" of the community...once the economy headed south, even they weren't interested in the overpriced, unnecessary "luxury" items offered. It's wonderful to "shop local" but not when the store only attracts VANITY buyers. (Oct 27, 2009 | post #6)
Wilkes Bashford closes Carmel store
It was horrendous of Wilkes Bashford not to give its employees any advance notice that the store was closing. On the flip side, it's good to note that "conspicuous consumption" is taking it's toll on some of the over-priced/rated shops in the area. Welcome to reality, Carmel! I hope the former employees file for unemployment benefits against Wilkes Bashford's funds immediately. (Oct 27, 2009 | post #2)

P.G. City Council seeks U.S. Open marketing effort
Do the members of the Pacific Grove City Council lie awake at night thinking of new ways to waste the taxpayers dollars? MAYBE the Council should concern themselves with trying to attract more permanent businesses to the downtown area and attempt to keep the existing ones from exiting the City limits... Pacific Grove is being poorly managed by a group of buffoons who should all be replaced with a few competent individuals who've got a clue as to what's going on around them. (Oct 8, 2009 | post #2)
Art heist investigation shifts to victims
ANYONE would do this if they were desperate enough for money...or psychopathic. (Oct 6, 2009 | post #11)
