Pope John Paul II 'beatified by spring 2009'
May John Paul II be set on the fast track like Mother Teresa. Hector, the pope has addressed, and addressed, and addressed the clergy scandal. Were you awake when he made his visit to America? Even the secular media acknowledged his multiple addressing of the issue and... they even were able to move on for a while. Why not you? A perpetual axe to grind? We need saints for this age. God speed the canonization of John Paul the Great. (May 24, 2008 | post #3)

How great you're having a procession. We're still working on our parish priest for that. I'd like to see ours go around the town center. In a neighboring parish the do that! God is working miracles all over, and they're getting closer to my parish every day. (May 24, 2008 | post #24921)

Yea, how about Dorothy Day, who had an abortion (or two) and is up for beatification in the Catholic Church? She is the woman behind the Catholic Worker organization, a honorable, exalted group of humble people who help the poor and marginalized of our society. But the only thing is, she recognized that her abortion killed her child, and she repented of it, seeking forgiveness from the all-merciful Jesus Christ. May she be held up as an example in our world as HOPE for our country! Thanks for bringing that up, Michelle. (May 24, 2008 | post #24920)

Former Patron, God loves you, and so do the members of His church. We might disagree with the way you live your life, but that can be true of how you view others. That doesn't mean you hate them or wish them ill will because you disagree with their choices or predilictions in life. Please have a wonderful Feast Day as well tomorrow. Hello Michelle, Thanks for the cordial wishes. I and my family will celebrate the Feast of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ tomorrow in a specialy way. You are so correct in saying it is a glorious and special feast day. May God be adored! You and everyone are in my prayers. Keep fighting the good fight. (May 24, 2008 | post #24916)
This is pretty stupid. Of course the pope has to be a Catholic... that's the Church Jesus founded and is alive today. (May 24, 2008 | post #5)

June, if St. Augustine was a homosexual, you'd be on here DEFENDING his actions. You're such a big hypocrite. You attack the Church and selectively attack the sinners in it. Why don't you defend or attack ALL sinners instead of just your pet few???? When are you going to get a life? (May 24, 2008 | post #24909)

What's your point, June? Should all the Catholics now post diaries entries of some foul and pervted non-believers? Of course their are sinners in our ranks....this is nothing new. But when these sinners convert, such as St. Paul, St. Augustine, now that is something to celebrate. But a man or woman wallowing in human lusts and desires... yawn... that's quite old hat. Also, June, the "this is a difficult teaching. Let him accept it who can" is not my phrasing, but is Christ's. With the help of Christ's grace, hundreds of thousands of men and women have held to this higher calling of refraining from sexual relations for the sake of the Kingdom of God. Yes, some have failed, but repentance and forgiveness are always offered this side of eternity. (May 7, 2008 | post #22816)

June, the issue of clerical celibacy has ALWAYS been with Christians. In 1 Corinthians 7 Paul deals exactly with the issue you bring up, along with your weak-kneed historian. Paul says that he is not married (1 Corinthians 7:8) so he can better serve the Kingdom of God, but if some men are tempted to sin or would like to marry, then by all means- go ahead and marry. (1 Corinthians 7:32-35) The weak-kneed, quasi-Christian historian you use is obviously against even the teachings of Christ, and not just the Catholic Church as he seemingly thinks that no man or woman can control sexual impulses for the sake of building up the kingdom of God. Jesus says in Matthew 19:12 that some people were born eunuchs, and others make themselves so. So men also give up sexual relations for the Kingdom of God. This is a difficult teaching LET HIM ACCEPT it who CAN. June, you're not a Catholic, and I find it very odd and ironic that you pretend to know what's best for the Catholic priesthood, but you're not spouting off about Buddhist monks and their celibacy. Are you just a hatemonger when it comes to Catholics, but other celibate religious men are exempt from your obsession? Christ, the founder of our religion, calls some men to this higher calling. Please just respect our beliefs. And if you don't like clerical celibacy, which was NOT begun during the Reformation, then let's see you attack some of the Buddhists here as well. Please demonstrate you have equal intolerance for all religiuos beliefs, not just the Catholics. (May 7, 2008 | post #22814)

Hello June, I can certainly see your point: "But I believe Gregory knew that the clergy that were married would be more beholden to family and would not be as beholden to the hierarchy of the church." But I also think that what Jesus said about giving up sexual relations for the sake of the Kingdom of God comes in to play here as well, and IMO, is the first reason for Gregory to have the clerical celibacy laws. Do you really think that Gregory was "jealous " of a few wives? Was Paul jealous of wives too when he suggested that men not marry if they were going to serve God? I agree that the laws that Gregory had in place were part of an ongoing reform, and do seem cold to us today, and to many back then. That's why in the next century, priests were required to NOT be married, and to more closely follow the biblical ideal for the ministerial priesthood. Gregory's foresight came into play when he said, ""It seems to us much better to rebuild the righteousness of God even by new measures, than to destroy the souls of men along with laws that are being neglected."[x ii] The new measures would prevent the harships you had mentioned earlier.
