A few more facts for all of you from this area that hate people who recieve government assistance.. Money began arriving with passage of the Economic Opportunity Act in 1965, the same year Congress established Medicare, Medicaid, Head Start and VISTA. The Appalachian Regional Commission was set up with a domain of 391 counties in 12 states. Mississippi, a non-Appalachian state, became the 13th in 1967. The regional commission now oversees federal development programs in 406 counties. One in three Appalachians was poor in 1965. The poverty rate now closely shadows that of the nation at about one in 14. The percentage of high school graduates doubled, to 68 percent, by 1990. The number of counties originally considered "distressed " -- 219 -- has been cut in half. Kathleen Blee, a University of Pittsburgh sociologist who collaborated on a recent study of Clay County, Ky., believes Clay's ruling families benefited most from money spent to fight the war on poverty. After a recent trip, she said, "To me, the poverty was staggering. I saw a woman holding a plastic milk carton against a rock to gather run-off." Congress funded the programs authorized by the EOA on the last day of the 1964 congressional session, October 8, with $800 million for fiscal year 1965, 15 percent less than the $947.5 million authorized. On November 25, 1964, OEO Director Shriver announced the first 119 projects, budgeted at $35 million, including thirty-two Job Corps camps and an urban training center; fourteen Neighborhood Youth Corps projects serving 10,500 youths in thirteen states; community action grants in twelve cities, six rural areas and one Native American reservation; work experience programs for unemployed parents in two cities and two counties; and work-study programs for needy college students at thirty-one colleges.  (Jul 27, 2008 | post #75)

Just throwing a few facts into this lovely discussion. Four out of 10 U.S. workers often or always live from paycheck to paycheck, according to a survey released Monday. Also, 41 percent of women say they do not have enough income to live comfortably, compared with 29 percent of men. U.S. government and other research reports have found that women earn about 77 cents for every dollar earned by men for comparable work. Women are also more likely to be single parents. The survey of 6,169 full-time adult workers was conducted between Nov. 17 and Dec. 11, 2006 by Harris Interactive and has a margin of error of plus or minus 1 percentage point. As Americans file for bankruptcy in record numbers and credit card debt explodes, more workers are a paycheck away from losing their homes. Now the frail economy is pushing them over the edge. With 9 million unemployed workers in July, the face of homelessness is changing to include more families shaken by joblessness. "There is still a mind-set that the homeless are substance abusers who have made bad life decisions," says Ralph Plumb, CEO of the Union Rescue Mission in Los Angeles. "But more and more, they are individuals responding to a catastrophic financial event. The homeless are us. They're regular folk." Nearly a quarter of Americans would be late on mortgages, rent or other bills if a single paycheck were delayed, according to a 2003 poll by Automatic Data Processing.  (Jul 27, 2008 | post #74)

I am unsure of the laws in kentucky regarding this.I do believe that some states are beginning to require places to post any price difference for cash/credit although your best bet as always would be to pay close attention to the price showing on the pump and the price printed on your reciept.  (Jul 23, 2008 | post #6)

I don't know if this applies in your case or not but some stations charge a different price for cash and credit.Alot of places don't advertise this price difference.I saw a video on yahoo the other day that said some places are charging up to an extra 50 cents per gallon for credit card users.  (Jul 23, 2008 | post #3)

ive got the dirt on the LC Board of Ed :)

You must spend your life badly pissed of then because stupidity is abundant in life and especially on this site. I grant you that what this person has said is highly unlikely BUT again stupidity is abundant and you seem only to get really upset about this topic not all....Here is a little sampling of some of the things you have said on this thread: most insane ideas You are a nut totally insane. You are so full of crap "I'm upset because some people may actually believe this crap. Anyway, what is it to you? I wasn't talking to you anyway." If someone believed this and called the board and it was in fact not true they would be advised of that I am sure..I do not think there is any danger of parents storming the board and demanding monies owed to them...lol..And I care for the same reason you do,very little tolerance of stupidity.  (Jul 22, 2008 | post #40)

Vets

My hamster is having some health issues and I was told by one vet clinic that I would have to go to Lexington for this exotic animal?! Does anyone know of a place here in London that is relatively cheap? Don't want to see it die but can not spend alot of money.  (Jul 19, 2008 | post #1)

Did the Sheriff get arrested last night?

I know that some poeple on here may have an agenda in posting this story and carrying the thread on...I simply say we do have a right to know what happened...Those that say this happens everday...It does I agree,I also agree that it is exactly WHO it was that matters in this case because you expect your sheriff to maintain control in higher stress situations than this..I also agree that we should wait and see what the report says when it is released..nothing will be gained or discovered by gossiping about what did or did not happen in this forum..  (May 29, 2008 | post #219)

Laurel teen dies after fall from cliff

Are you really unaware that alot of these posters are 19 and younger?...I don't believe anyone has argued that doing stupid things wont get you hurt..As another human and a parent I feel sorrow for this family...regardless of the circumstances this was a horrible thing for his family and friends...All of the negative people on here just need to remember that...I hardly think his mother is concerned with being classy or really what anyone on this thread has to say...Personally I think I would not even be aware of what was happening around me...I can't imagine the pain and sorrow...that is what the focus should be...How horrible would it be to get that call,to hear that news?..Could you go on? How would you go on?..How do you live every day knowing that you will never see your son again?...Someone you spent your life looking out for...If you have children you know the kind of love I am talking about...The kind that keeps you up at night thinking of things like this that could happen and praying they never will...Let it be..Let them attempt to heal..  (May 28, 2008 | post #57)
