Living in Cary

Apex is growing and if you want to live on a larger lot you could choose Apex, but Chatham County (not Wake County part of Apex). The schools are not quite as good, but they are less crowded and you can get a lot more house for the money. Even cheaper to build a nice house in Apex (Wake of Chatham Counties) then to buy an over priced Cary Houe. North Raleigh is very nice, but more expensive then even Cary.  (Saturday Oct 31 | post #439)

Fox 8 WGHP

N.C. State Fires Alumni Group's Leader, Cites Finances - WGHP

Why pay him $170,000 a year to head an alumni association - maybe that is why people refuse to donate.  (Oct 13, 2009 | post #2)

Criminal Defense Law

Four-Month Sentence for Detective Convicted of Perjury

The case against former Detective Christopher Perino is probably the only case where his lies were recorded. How many people were convicted by statements he made on other cases? How many other police officers also have lied to get a conviction?  (Sep 22, 2009 | post #1)

Town hall meeting on health care reform brings out rowdy crowd,...

The problems with your ideas: 1. You want to eliminate pre-existing conditions, but the market action is to decide who you are willing to cover based upon their needs / condition. As an employer your premiums are based upon many conditions and one is the general health of your employees. If you have high claims then the insurance company has no choice but to raise your rates. The insurance companies will not do away with charging sick people more money. Example: If I need an expensive surgery and an insurance company has to cover me wouldn't it be in their best interest not to cover the pre-existing condition? 2. Purchasing insurance across a state line is fine, but most insurance companies have in and out of network providers. This act would require providers to sign up with a lot more insurers or just to be an out of network provider when it comes to a small group. #. Pooling also makes sense, but that already happens as you can buy into various groups that an insurance company has. This is often based upon what type of business you are such as manufacturing, retail, professionals and so on. The problem with your business combining with the business down the road to purchase insurance, rather then just joining a group that the insurance company has, is that it can set you up to a liability if the other busines has financial problems. 4. A government mandate for coverage? You ewanted the government to stay out of the matter. 5. Tort reform - this would be nice, but lawyers will not let it happen. I would think a good plan would be to have a Medicare type system where you could buy into the plan, but only the options you or the employer wanted. Maybe you buy a dental, vision, mental health, maternity / family plan, catastrophic or just a basic watered down high deductable I hope not to get sick plan. This type of plan I think gives employers and employees the best option as then it is not a one size fits all plan.  (Sep 11, 2009 | post #133)

RE: Moving to Raleigh

If higher learning means working at one of the universities then that is what should decide the area you want to live in. NC State, Meredith and many smaller colleges are in Raleigh. Raleigh is pretty spread out, but has a large interstate system that runs through and around it. North Raleigh is a little more exclusive (expensive) with many homes that are not cookie cutter houses, west Raleigh has more traditional homes of the 1950's - 1970's, but also a lot of student housing. The suburb of Apex is developing quickly, but that puts a strain on the schools and many middle schools use trailers to supplement the traditional buildings, Fuquay Varina and Holly Springs are a little furtehr commute for work and school. Cary is boring and most northeners move here to work research or university jobs. Many great over priced neighborhoods. Wake County uses bussing to get an appropriate mix of students (based on economics not race), but that means a child may end up with a long bus ride, the county also has traditional and a year round school schedule that could disrupt a family. If you will work at Duke, then there is Treyburn and Croisdale and many other upscale areas - all of Durham is not crime ridden. Working at UNC Chapel Hill gives you Chapel Hill Carrboro schools - competitive, but good schools. I moved from the finger lakes region of NY and love the weather, but still like small town NY better.  (Sep 11, 2009 | post #312)

VP Joe Biden pledges to back workers in Pa. stop

These employees used to have company paid health insurance with some of the premiums paid by the employee. Now that their employer has not paid premiums do they believe healthcare reform makes sense?  (Sep 8, 2009 | post #17)

Rep. Rangel Stays Amid New Financial Allegations

Rangel wants to change the tax rates on people who earn over $350,000 a year to help pay for the change in the healthcare system. President Obama wants the limit for those who earn over $250,000. Is Charlie's new found wealth (the money that he now reports he has and earns) over $250,000 a year but less the $350 and he does not want another law applying to him? How does his new reporting affect his rent stabilized apartments in NYC?  (Sep 8, 2009 | post #1)

Ex-port director charged $35,932 on credit card

The same person must have judged all the responses that have a problem with how tax dollars are spent as Nuts, Spam and Clueless. Yes it would be nice to see how the Councilmen spent the stipends they were given and to see if anyone has fiscal responsibility and returned any money, but the story was how the head of the port spent money.  (Sep 8, 2009 | post #31)

Town hall meeting on health care reform brings out rowdy crowd,...

The majority of people complaining either have company or publically paid for healthcare. Many of these people (especially the public employees) pay little to nothing for their insurance and just a partial amount for family coverage. These are the people who want family coverage to go to age 25. Let them have to purchase their own health coverage an you will see a change in attitude. For those claiming they do not want to support others by paying for their health coverage will they either give up Medicare or refuse to accept it when they are eligible - as the taxpayer is paying for this. No your contributions to the system have not paid for all the Medicare benefits that exist. I purchase my own insurance for close to $500 a month and have no medical problems. For those of you against the plan tell us who provides your health insurance and that of your family and any contributions you may make.  (Sep 8, 2009 | post #127)

Town hall meeting on health care reform brings out rowdy crowd,...

Retired school teacher Dorothy Blaustein complains about government health insuranse and "public option" and "universal health care", but like many public and union employees the majority of their healthcare is paid for by the public and not themselves. The majority of those against reform I believe have employer paid coverage that costs them and their families very little. If they were required to pay more of their own premiums then they might understand the need for reform.  (Sep 4, 2009 | post #44)

Committee stipends spotlighted

On the Assembly side, Assemblyman Gary Pretlow, D-Mount Vernon, Westchester County, receives $12,500 a year as chairman of the Racing and Wagering Committee. It met three times during the 69-day legislative session, which ended in late June, according to Assembly records. "The stipend is not for how many committee meetings you have, the stipend is for your knowledge of a certain area of law and your availability to be there for those issues," Pretlow said. See they have an excuse for not having a meeting. They are paid because they are "KNOW IT ALLS" that do not need to listen to others or the public.  (Aug 10, 2009 | post #2)

Committee stipends spotlighted

Why should a committee have to meet? The legislators will tell you there staff has handled the matter and since the legislature is a part time body they only need to meet once every few years.  (Aug 10, 2009 | post #1)

Newsday no longer linked to Topix?

If newspapers want to increase their readership they need to do more local interest stories. You can get all the national news on the internet, but a good newspaper will try to get local stories that are not news worthy to people outside the geographic area. In addition if they concentrated more on local issues and would charge less for classified ads (cars, births, obituaries) and general ads for businesses they could make money on both print and internet papers.  (Aug 4, 2009 | post #315)
