Maybe you should start with your old testament bible to see how it takes religion to make good men do real evil things. Th old testament is full of stories of the Israelites conquoring other cultures and committing genocide. They wiped out entire cities, killing men, women, children and animals. Then there's The Inquisition Spanish Inquisition The Crusades where once they conquored Jerusalem, they slaughtered everyone in the city. How about the Salem witch trials Hitler thought he was doing the work of god by getting rid of the Jews. Let's not forget what the Spanish missionaries did to the Inca's and other South American natives. Just look at how Muslim extremists have used their religion to wage war. Rhwanda's genocide had religious undertones to it. Souotherners justified slavery using the Bible-one of Noah's sons. shall I go on?  (3 hrs ago | post #14926)

Louie, I agree with most of what you have said. In my opinion, the unconditional surrender of Japan was not a sure thing. The military tried to overthrow the Emperor and wanted to keep on fighting. Had we had to invade, I think the cost would have been in the millions, on both sides. Japanese civilians were instructed to commit hari-kari. Fathers were given directions to kill their families then themselves. The Battle for Okinawa clearly demonstrated what was ahead for the American Navy. That being said, if what you say is true, that the Japanese were going to surrender unconditionally, there were multiple reasons for dropping the Atomic Bombs 1. Force Japan into unconditional surrender without an invasion (Questionable according to you) 2. Impress/scare Stalin 3. Assess the bomb as a weapon in actual combat/  (7 hrs ago | post #211386)

Tell me how things are in vietnam now??? after 30 years of brutual war, by both sides, there was bound to be some retribution. Had we kept the deal we made with Uncle Ho during WWII, he probably would have had more diplomatic and economic relations with the west than with Russia and China. Heck the Vietnamese and Chinese have been enemies for centuries. Ho only went to Mao for help out of necessity. Vietnam would have had the government they wanted and millions would have been spared. as to the other communist regimes, how is what you described any different than say Pinochet's rule in Chile courtsey of the CIA. or the dictatorships we established in Argentina. Sting even has a song about that Other ultra right wing dictatorships we established and supported in Honduras Indonesia Brazil Panama (Noriega and drug running) South Vietnam All of Central America I have Persian friends who lived under the Shah and lost relatives to the SAVAK. Just because Russia supported brutual dictatorships did not mean we should have too. Get off your high horse and come back down to reality. The only thing our military spread after Korea was economic seizure of the world's natural resources for the benefit of America's industrial leaders and elite.  (8 hrs ago | post #211379)

Of course after 30 years of war there was bound to be some retribution, especially considering how savage the war was conducted by both sides. But all of that could have be avoided had we kept to the deal we made with Uncle Ho in WWII. Help us fight the Japanese and we will grant you your independence. The Japanese kicked the French out, Uncle Ho helped us defeat the Japanese. Then we reneged on the deal and the French tried to recolonize Vietnam. When the UN called for free elections and we saw our side would lose, we reneged on that too. SO MUCH FOR SPREADING DEMOCRACY- The South Vietnamese gov't was corrupt, brutual to its citizens and not democratic. Whereas in the North, people had the gov't they wanted. Uncle Ho was an admirer of George Washington, had we kept to the deal, he probably would have wanted relations (economic and diplomatic) with us rather than the Soviets. He only went to them and China because we forced him. BTW the Vietnamese and Chinese were never friendly, just a relationship of necessity. I also grew up in the 60's and what I remember is an American foreign policy of supporting ultra right wing dictatorships that allowed american industry into their country to exploit its natural resources without benefitting the citizens of that country We were known for overthrowing democratically elected heads of state and installing dictators Chile & Pinochet Iran & The Shah Indonesia & Suhato just about all of south and central america  (Wednesday | post #211326)

Do we tell you how to pray? Do we get between you and your doctor and make medical decisions for you? You know what your problem is, you feel that it is right to impose your religious beliefs into our secular law. What Democrats realize, is that not all Americans share your beliefs. Since this is a land of religious freedom, you are allowed to practice your religion as you see fit, but so is everyone else. ergo, you can not impose your religious tenets on others, just as they can't impose theirs on you. Since others accept homosexuals as citizens with the same rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, homosexuals should have the right to same sex marriages. If you don't believe in it, don't marry someone of the same sex. simple isn't it. same with abortion, the majority of Americans do not believe a blastocyst, zygote, embryo, fetus is a sentient human being, and they believe a woman's medical decisions about her abortion should be between her and her doctor, not her and the gov't. If you believe a fertilized egg has a soul from the moment of conception, fine, DON'T BELIEVE IN ABORTION, DON'T HAVE ONE. Is there a middle on abortion?

Maybe you should do some research, like say on freedom, control over one's body, the freedom to make your own medical decisions and as the right loves to say, no government between a citizen and their doctor. The majority of abortions are performed on women between the ages of 25 to 40 who are married, have children already and were using birth control. Pssst he also forgot about the narrow majority the Democrats have in the Senate and how a minority can hold up the will of the people without compromising, Psst, oh I forgot who I am talking to. There's a procedure in the Senate called a FILIBUSTER. Now when the Democrats were a minority under Bush, the GOP sought to do away with the Filibuster. The were strong advocates of a "Straight up & down vote". But now, in the 2 years the Democrats have been a <60% majority, the GOP has used it 212 times. That's a Senate record by over a 100, and in only 2 years,not 4. So yes we do have someone to blame 1. 1st ourselves for not walking in lock step with the party, unlike the GOP. 2. For not listening to the GOP, and finally eliminating the filibuster once and for all. Let's become a democracy once again and allow majority rule. Let the population decide. If we really wanted a democracy, we'd eliminate the senate altogether. I'm sick of my state getting only 2 votes while 14 other states get 28 and my state has a bigger population and economy.  (Monday Dec 21 | post #503)

No Federal money can be used in any abortion, nor birth control (I think). The anti-choice, its our way crowd has seen to that.
