Editors: How to add pictures to Topix articles.
Just a little FYI - I'm probably not saying anything that people don't already know, but just in case... here's how to easily and legally add pictures from the web to Topix articles: 1. Get a flickr account. (http://www.flickr .com/) 2. Go to advance search by first clicking on "Search" and then "Advanced Search". A large (more than two screens) search page comes up. (http://www.flickr .com/search/advanc ed/) 3. Type in keywords to get desired photos. You might want to look for Knoxville specific pics by adding the word "Knoxville " to your keyword search - for example, I got the picture of the Knoxville storm (7-21-08) by using keywords "Knoxville storm". 4. Go to the very bottom of the advance search page where the following two checkboxes MUST be marked "True" (be checked): a. Only search within Creative Commons-licensed content b. Find content to use commercially As long as your picture conforms to parts 4a and 4b, there will be no problem. Of course, there is also the option of taking your own pictures and adding them to the site, if they're relevant. Anyway, I just wanted to write this because I do think the site looks better with pictures and am trying to use more myself. And it is pretty easy. (Jul 23, 2008 | post #1)
Gas stations putting holds on bank cards?
This is definitely upsetting. I've never been the biggest fan of debit cards to begin with. (Jul 22, 2008 | post #25)
With tremendous interest, I've watched this story develop over the past months. Seems like many had a pretty strong opinion about the school calender, yet I'm not entirely surprised with the response (nor with the demographic that mostly responded) expressing to leave it as it is. The school year's parameters do seem to work well enough, but it just seems very different from what I personally grew up with. We didn't have a fall break, and Easter/spring break was limited to Good Friday and the following Monday. Summer break comprised a full three months. (Jul 22, 2008 | post #1)
Encouraging kids to be energy conscious
I've often wondered about letting the car idle for a few minutes vs. turning it off every time one pauses for longer than a stop light. It seems that it would be harder on the transmission to keeping turning it off and on, but I've never pursued any research about it. (Jul 21, 2008 | post #4)
As our SUV drinks up the 25.00 worth I just put in yesterday, I guess I'll start noticing the locations where the drop has occured. Hopefully down the street! (Jul 21, 2008 | post #2)
Encouraging kids to be energy conscious
After hearing our youngster leave the tv on again (she had left the room to play elsewhere), we decided it was time for a little energy education. We checked out the meter on the side of the house (spinning dizzingly), and talked about how higher energy use means more dollars due each month to pay the bill. We went back inside, turned off almost everything, and noted how dramatically the meter slowed down. We then discussed which items use the most power (ie, the AC unit). We also drew pictures about various sources of energy production (nuclear, solar, oil, etc.). Children seem to appreciate the ability to keep an extra buck in the pocket, so we now have an energy siren reminding us to "turn off that light", and so forth. What approaches have y'all taken to make your progeny a little more energy efficient and/or environmentally aware? (Jul 21, 2008 | post #1)
Home-produced meals are superior for all of the obvious reasons (cost, flavor, etc.), but there is something very special, I think, about drive-ins in the summer. It's a lot more fun to have that Sonic, Checkers, or Varsity burger or dog with the car windows down, listening to music and talking with your family or friends. (Jul 21, 2008 | post #372)
Parker wins two ESPY Awards; Summitt named top coach
We are so fortunate to have such talent in Knoxville. Both Ms. Summit and Ms. Parker are excellent role models. Ms. Parker has a tremendous future ahead of her. (Jul 21, 2008 | post #1)

Oil prices rise to record highs above $144
rolleyes: Well, there's also the fact that futures markets work and have for centuries. Your *food* is traded on the futures market... what's so special about oil that it cannot be? (Jul 5, 2008 | post #40)
Some not fans of raises for coaches
"Just think of how many college professors UT could hire if they got rid of Phil Fulmer and paid their salaries with the millions they use to pay Phil." The answer is 0, zero, zilch, nada. As the article says, Phil and the entire athletic department are not paid out of the same funds as UT. If the entire athletic department was done away with, there wouldn't be an additional dollar available for academics. The true issue here is the dichotomy between people wanting a 21st-century education (and other gov't services) while living in a state with a 19th-century tax code. As long as TN doesn't have an income tax, this state will always be second-tier as far as governmental services are concerned. (Jul 5, 2008 | post #7)
Knoxville cruises to top ten of safe drivers list
Yeah, I can believe it. I grew up in the mean streets of Atlanta and coming to (and driving in) Knoxville was a bit of a cultural shock. I knew I was in a different driving environment when I actually saw some teenager lay on the brakes so he could stop at a yellow light! (Jul 4, 2008 | post #1)

Realty Bites: The Knoxville Real Estate Scene : Features : Metr...
There is a house in the neighborhood behind me where the price was reduced a number of times since it was put on market whereupon the owners decided to try the rental market - successfully, unfortunately. (Jun 29, 2008 | post #2)
