Ribbon cutting christens Starmax today

Looked at the place for the first time today. It wasn't open at 11:15 or so when I passed, and later the bus driver told me it opens at noon, the bar doesn't even have its liquor license yet and just serves soft drinks and snacks! $8.? million for that little dinky building, hmm... I don't think the investors will be getting any ROI for the next 100 years or so. Make that "never" if the mythical "economy " goes belly-up. It was worth the trip, though. I'd never known about the beautiful park across the street, apparently made out of the gully dug for building up the bank for I-10, where water collects and wildlife flourishes. There was a gorgeous tamarisk tree in bloom, its pink flowers attracting honeybees.  (Jun 23, 2009 | post #10)

Commuter bus service between Las Cruces and El Paso proposed

Beaverton: public transit in the area is pretty spotty, 1/2 hour to one hour wait between runs, and limited hours. But it's usable if you don't have a fixed schedule. Now if there we could just have an affordable Deming-LC route, this LC-EP run could be the icing on a very nice cake. Truth be told, if I could get to Cruces for a reasonable tarifa, I probably wouldn't need El Paso at all.  (Jun 15, 2009 | post #4)

Harry's right. My drug of choice is good old American beer, and in any case we're in complete agreement. Barack Obama and GWB are kissing cousins as far as I'm concerned. I credit Dubya as being the foremost globalist to put the truth unequivocally *in our face*, but the same game continues with Obama as it would have with John Kerry 4 years ago. Let's try to see through differences in hair length and skin color; the American ideal of freedom has been around for millions of years, and will be around long after we're pushing up chollas. Keep your weapons clean and your ammo out of the monsoon rains, and maybe we'll fend off the next assault together.  (Jun 15, 2009 | post #11)

Deming man charged with criminal sexual penetration of a minor

Not all cultures punish consensual sexual intercourse with post-pubertal females, no matter how young. And not all cultures are as sexually repressed as ours. I'm not condoning what the guy did, but how much of that "scumbag " label is due to societal programming? Just give it some thought, OK? Maybe there's a saner way to do things than what we have now. It's pretty obvious that our current mores and laws aren't achieving very good results.  (Jun 14, 2009 | post #8)

Etymology of "czar", from http://www.etymonl ine.com/index.php? l=c&p=34: ----- 1555, from Rus. tsar, from Old Slavic tsesari, from Gothic kaisar, from Gk. kaisar, from L. Caesar. First adopted by Russian emperor Ivan IV, 1547. The spelling with cz- is against the usage of all Slavonic languages; the word was so spelt by Herberstein, Rerum Moscovit. Commentarii, 1549, the chief early source of knowledge as to Russia in Western Europe, whence it passed into the Western Languages generally; in some of these it is now old-fashioned; the usual Ger. form is now zar; French adopted tsar during the 19th c. This also became frequent in English towards the end of that century, having been adopted by the Times newspaper as the most suitable English spelling. [OED] The Gmc. form of the word also is the source of Finnish keisari, Estonian keisar. The transferred sense of "person with dictatorial powers" is first recorded 1866, Amer.Eng., initially in ref. to President Andrew Johnson. The fem. czarina is 1717, from It. czarina, from Ger. Zarin, fem. of Zar "czar." The Rus. fem. is tsaritsa. His son is tsarevitch, his daughter is tsarevna. ----- So we have not one dictator, but several! I know many "off the sofa" people in this area. And we don't need a leader because we have a shared vision of what freedom is all about: look up "leaderless resistance". Learning to live without central services is the first step. When we have no more *need* for government, its cloak of legitimacy will be gone, and it will be shown for what it is: a huge sucking parasite. Actually several, on the city, county, state, and federal levels! It's a wonder we have any blood left.  (Jun 13, 2009 | post #7)

Tom, do you honestly believe that the United States of America is the same free country it was (believed to be) back in the 50's and early 60's? That the stars and stripes still stand for freedom? If there was any doubt in my mind, GWB sure erased it. Obama will have to call in reinforcements from Mars to make the truth any more starkly real than it now is. Rented a tent, a tent, a tent...  (Jun 12, 2009 | post #5)

Thanks to military, our wars are waged elsewhere

I'll bet that really warms the hearts of the families of people killed by our soldiers for the dubious motives and goals of the US Government. Just the kind of flag-waving I'd expect out of Mayberry, USA.  (Jun 4, 2009 | post #1)

BLM wants to hear from public on power line

If you helped pay for it, I sure hope you took advantage of it. I always use what I call the "Bill Gates" test: could Bill have qualified for the rebates? If so, then it wasn't "luck" or any other criterion; he got the rebates because he took the initiative. That's a few tens of thousands that didn't go into killing women and children in Iraq or Afghanistan. Good for him. Anyway, it doesn't take much electricity to post on Topix. I have only two 80W panels and a 400W Air-X wind generator at home that runs my laptop, wifi router, and miscellaneous other stuff; connecting over wireless to our Community Center where the DSL line is, and those two routers only draw another 20W or so. And none of it was paid for by taxpayer funded rebates.  (Jun 4, 2009 | post #15)

Schools enter new age of climate control

Rereading my post, I came off as a real curmudgeon. Didn't mean to be. Obviously this is a start in the right direction, but without cost information it's impossible to evaluate the ROI. In any case it is probably better for the environment, and should be lauded at least for that.  (Jun 3, 2009 | post #3)

Angelo Vega new police chief of Columbus!!!!!

I'm not so concerned with the other 21 cases that come up with Angelo Vega's name at nmcourts.gov, but what about this one: http://www.nmcourt s.gov/caselookup/a pp?component=cnLin k&page=SearchR esults&service =direct&sessio n=T&sp=SM-30-M R-200100032, Albina Chavez charging him with stalking? If the women of Columbus are endangered with him roaming the streets, he should be fired sooner rather than later. Why did acting district attorney Reed Thompson decline to prosecute? Could anyone in Carrizozo fill in the blanks? Thanks -- jc from Columbus  (May 30, 2009 | post #27)
