Equally disturbing was a quote was from John Boozer who stated, "It takes parents, teachers and the entire community to teach our young adults the importance of reliability and commitment." This is certainly a very fair statement. Why do you think that this should only be a parents responsibility? How can you equate this too just a parental role? Reliability and commitment are qualities that we should all display, especially those in a postion to influence our children. Your attack on Mr. Boozer is completly out of line and I think he deserves an apology from you. I challenge you to log onto the comments section and explain your postition to what will probably be a lot of negative responses to your arrogance.  (Mar 11, 2008 | post #8)

Our view: 'Skip Day' does pupils a potential disservice

Living at home is not such a bad thing. It gives the kid an opportunity to build a nest egg of savings. An opportunity to go out and explore the world, find out who they are, make some mistakes and still have a foundation to fall on should they fail. It also helps the parents survive in this poor economic time. Now if the kid is just a loaf and not sharing the burden of expenses, thats different. Get out and get a job. the problem with some of this thinking is that by the child needs a good foundation from about two years old to 10 years old. This is when they develop study habits, sleeping habits, grounded in the established rules of the household, school, society. Too many people let the kids run the roost and then cry to the police, 'I can't contol my child, he's disrespetful. " Well let me tell you. No one can come in and magically break the bad habits you permitted and thought were cute when the kid was a toddler. **** do you expect. By the time the child is a senior, they better have some plan for after high school or its too late. Taking one day off should not affect their senior year, again, if it does, there are bigger problems. And people need to slow down a little and enjoy themselves. If the kid worked hard in school for twelve years, let him take a skip day. These kids should be intelligent enough to realize that if they skip a day of work , their not getting paid. If they skip too much, they won't have a job. If you raised your child with a good work ethic, let them decide if they can skip or not. If the kid is having trouble in school. The parent needs to step in and say NO , your not skipping. again, with three months to graduation, if skipping one day is an issue, THERE are BIGGER problems.  (Feb 28, 2008 | post #22)

Letter to the editor: Message to Obama -- be proud or leave

perhaps i did not thoroughly explain my position. The news media seems to focus their reporting/sensatio nalizing the crime committed by blacks. The links were articles written in a Philadelphia news paper. It was not my intention to suggest that only blacks commit crimes. And i am wide awake and not a Chambersburg Native. It is my suggestion that the news media fuels the fears of society by their reporting methods. They focus on reporting the crimes committed by blacks and thus sending the message to rural america that all blacks committ crimes. I am well aware that this is not the case. Go to the Franklin COunty Courthouse on any given Tuesday and it is probably 90% white defendants. You just never see a big news article on the offenses. Many of the most recent national headlined crimes were committed by whites. The NIU shooting for example. You just don't see the focus when the offender is not black. I agree that there is injustice in America. Even though we obtain most of our information from television and the internet, what grounds our beliefs is our upbringing. It takes an intelligent person to sort through the B.S. and see what is really taking place. Everyone is interested in violent society, let's change to focus to what people are doing that is good in society. It's Black history month and i think i saw one piece on the local news about kids in Harrisburg doing a play in regards to black history month. It lasted about one minute. that is what the majority in society see. It certainly doesn't help curb the racist views that are out there.  (Feb 28, 2008 | post #44)

I often see people refer to the racism in central PA. You people need to check out the links in topix to blogs from Texas, Georgia and Florida. Those people are down right vicious. And don't paint us all with the same brush. You need to get over your anger for losing the war.  (Feb 28, 2008 | post #41)

I really hate to slam the school distict, it is certainly not easy and you cant make everyone happy. It is very difficult to change a so-called tradition that has been in place for years. It should certainly be treated as any other day when the kids don't show up. If the kid is going to fail in life because of missing one day of school, they have bigger problems than that. The bigger question is , what are they out doing on this skip day?  (Feb 28, 2008 | post #12)
