Plans under way to add Skokie Swift stop at Oakton, possibly in...

how about extending the line all the way back to milwaukee, as when it was the old chicago, north shore & milwaukee line? make it a four track, high speed electric line with TGV-type trains... middle tracks for express, outer tracks for locals?  (Friday Aug 15 | post #16)

Putin to US: Stay Out of This Conflict

why do i bother? gov-sucks, look it up. the aforementioned russian systems mentioned are intercontinental ballistic missiles, ground and sub-launched. jet fighters cannot shoot them down. these missiles fly in space, no fighter can go there. that's enough for you. get educated.  (Thursday Aug 14 | post #1652)

no- game over when russia fires a few hundred RT-2PM's and a dozen or so of their 3M14's at us. four or five hundred 550kt warheads coming right at our cities and missile silos. game truly over, then. gov-sucks, you are stupid.  (Wednesday Aug 13 | post #1510)

ah, biblical prophecy. what would we do without it? truth is there's plenty of reasons not to go to war with russia. to those in the USA who rattle sabres toward russia- reasons not to intervene militarily on behalf of georgia: 1. both russian and american forces still have workable nuclear weapons and delivery systems. the temptation to use them would be too great if one side were on the verge of losing a battle. i don't know about you, but i live within 50 miles of downtown chicago and within 30 miles of o'hare field- both class 1 russian ICBM/SLBM targets. i don't have a nuclear bomb shelter nearby (remember those back in the day?). chances are, neither do you. georgia's independence is not worth 100 million american lives. 2. georgia has long been a part of greater russia, long before the soviet union. it's like texas breaking off from the USA- eventually it's gotta expect to be re-integrated into the union, peaceably or otherwise. 3. even if a nuclear war could be avoided, we do not have the airlift/sealift capability, nor the armor, nor the troop carriers, nor the fuel, nor the troops, or much of anything else, to go into battle with russians in/around georgia. the ruskies can simply drive home and get more men and "stuff" and bring it back into battle. you can thank bush cheney & co.(I.E., our little incursion into iraq) for this situation. 4. americans are sick of endless war- even if it could be kept non-nuclear (which i doubt). any president proposing to go to war with russia would likely be impeached and thrown out of office the same day (if something more drastic didn't occur first). does anybody disagree? go ahead, explain.  (Wednesday Aug 13 | post #1486)

Monster trains coming down the tracks?

DM&E has not indicated an interest in buying the EJ&E. However, the combined DM&E/IC&E system is pending sale to Canadian Pacific Railway- which if it was interested in the "J"- no doubt would utilize the "J" in much the same way as the CN wants to do. WS does not have the $$$$ to acquire an EJ&E. in fact, WS is probably a takeover target in the future. It's ironic that DM&E's operations in illinois, iowa and missouri (the IC&E) was briefly owned by CP's U.S. subsidiary, the former Soo Line. The history of all these lines we're talking about get even more complicated before that, but no sense getting into it here.  (Wednesday Aug 13 | post #357)

Monster trains coming down the tracks?

i'm pretty sure that CN, the state of illinois and local communities can work out grade separations for most grade crossings. and bypass routes for trains around downtown areas. barrington and frankfort could have those bypasses.  (Tuesday Aug 12 | post #102)
