Senate health bill displeases Herger
Thanks to the Chico ER for providing an alternative analysis to the party line dogma provided by Mr. Herger. (Friday Dec 25 | post #2)
Chicoans asked to again refrain from lighting fires, woodstoves
Thanks to the AQMD for keeping track of weather conditions/forecasts and attempting to balance the political pressures of pyrophylics with the need to protect health. I don't think the District allows ag burning on these no-burn days when the air isn't circulating. Hopefully urban woodstove owners will moderate their burning when the air is still and compressed by inversion. (Friday Dec 4 | post #2)

Instant (blue) green comes to Verbena Fields
Last summer I spent a couple of hours filling heavy trash bags with puncture vine plants that were creeping near the bike trail that weaves through the park. This non-native invasive plant needs to be eradicated through focused attention by the city and the citizens who care about bicycling. (Nov 30, 2009 | post #3)
Letter: Most people happy with insurance
The survey also found: * 28% said that they or a family member had at some time been unable to get the medical care they needed. Again, the incidence was higher for households making $35,000 and less (42%). * 42% of respondents are very or somewhat concerned they could lose their health insurance within the next year. In general, concern increases as household income decreases, but even 35% in those in households annually earning $100,000 or more are concerned. * When asked to give all of the reasons why they had been unable to get care, 67% said cost, 58% said lack of insurance and 48% said their insurance would not cover the needed care. In another Zogby Interactive poll of adults in the United Kingdom found that 71% are satisfied with the National Health Service (NHS), that nation's publicly-funded healthcare system. 71% are satisfied and 27% are dissatisfied. Satisfaction increased with age, going from 55% among those 18-29 to 86% among those 65 and older. Men were more likely to be satisfied with the NHS than women, 77% to 66%. A 2007 Zogby Poll indicated that almost everyone in America - 91% - believes the U.S. health care system is in need of some kind of reform. (Nov 29, 2009 | post #1)

D.C.-area sniper John Allen Muhammad executed
This is a story about a veteran of the first phase of the gulf war...mind and body trained by military procedures. Executed on the eve of Veterans' Day 2009. This nation must expend more resources on debriefing our combat vets. Not all vets are as well adjusted as our councilman Larry Wahl. (Nov 11, 2009 | post #3)
Editorial: A start, but what kind of a start"
"even the Butte Environmental Council"! Thanks for the dubious praise for BEC's decade long struggle to advocate for the water that sustains the Sac valley environment and economy. Only BEC has been willing to challenge the water buffalo in court. (Nov 9, 2009 | post #2)
Stimulus funds will help with Butte's new solar project
I'm happy to read that this phase will place panels on existing developed footprints rather than breaking new ground on oak woodlands and wetland swales. (Oct 30, 2009 | post #1)

Chico City Council: No smoking in City Plaza
In fairness, I know of several tobacco users who conscientiously dispose of their butts and packs like any other piece of litter. Many tobacco heads however seem totally unaware that their nicotine delivery packages are a gross accumulation of litter. My friend grew a beautiful tobacco plant next to his cannabis plant. He used no chemicals in the growing and curing of the tobacco. I sampled the tobacco and it had plenty of buzzing nicotine and a mellow flavor compared with the commercial product. Users should try growing their own. I think it would be a healthier product and they would not smoke so habitually (additively). No filter litter either. Hey "Brownstone " and "Because I Can", Obama smokes tobacco. (Oct 22, 2009 | post #36)
Both local CSU trustees oppose oil extraction tax bill
Maggot, All the other states are charging this type of resource extraction tax so you are already paying. But the benefits are accruing ti citizens in such liberal states as Texas and Alaska. California was considering charging about 4%. Alaska charges 25%. They get a free ride in California. Chevron is making record breaking profit because the public is asleep at the wheel driving fast toward the cliff. (Oct 22, 2009 | post #5)
Both local CSU trustees oppose oil extraction tax bill
Toney and Linscheid are on track by supporting the right of oil companies to extract public resources without having to pay for them. These extractors have been pulling out the petrol for decades without paying the normal severance fee as other states have been doing since the beginning. California has failed to collect billions of dollars from the likes of Chevron. Linscheid wants students to pay, not oil corporations. Alaska extractors pay 25%. The LA Times thinks that our failure to collect the normal fee is "a measure of its economic stupidity". Now I don't think Linscheid and Toney are stupid. But I think they serve corporate masters and extreme ideology while our public education system is being starved. http://www.latimes .com/business/la-f i-hiltzik15-2009ju n15,0,679458.colum n (Oct 22, 2009 | post #1)
Chico City Council: No smoking in City Plaza
Keep your cigarette butts. Don't put them in the street. They was into the gutter and flow into the creek. Its just a little piece of trash. But a billion filter butts a day adds up real fast. Keep your cigarette butts. Keep your cigarette packs. Don't drop them on the ground. Put them in the trash. (Oct 21, 2009 | post #2)
Woman trying to park spurs three-car crash
Bike lanes designed to offer a modicum of safety to those who commute without internal combustion engines are often disrespected by motorists. This forces bikers into traffic. "No Parking" in bike lanes should be enforced by officers and encouraged by social etiquette. (Oct 17, 2009 | post #4)
