New Currituck bridge option unveiled

Have the State come in and TAKE YOUR LAND and destroy your neighborhood for a bridge of CONVENIENCE. Maple Swamp is an environmentally sensitive area and serves as a source of our drinking water. It is a fact that where there are bridges there is increased crime due to ease of ingress/egress. The problem with traffic on the northern Outer Banks is that ridiculous intersection at 158/12, not enough travel lanes to accommodate the traffic and the bottleneck in Duck. Why not stagger the days that the renters come in during the summer? That would solve a lot of the traffic issues except that once the renters/guests arrive they can't go anywhere why? Again because the roads from S. Shores to Duck can't accommodate the level of traffic.  (Thursday | post #10)

New Currituck bridge option unveiled

Matt, first, to build a $650 MILLION dollar bridge for the buses is nuts. The people that live there like the remoteness of the area, that's the attraction. The bus drivers are paid to do their job, if they don't like it, do something else, but that is no reason to build a bridge. Second, the article discusses building the bridge through Maple Swamp and removing Aydlett road. Option B also calls for putting 8 toll booths very close to the sound in an existing neighborhood and the prettiest area of Aydlett. Besides the toll booths there would also be support buildings and parking lots for the toll workers. This option will also allow bridge travelers to exit right into our neighborhoods when traffic backs up which IT WILL. Aydlett residents will have to use the bridge road as ingress and egress to 158. If the traffic is backed up how are emergency vehicles going to get to us in a timely manner. The traffic on the Outer Banks is due to poor intersection design at the 158/12 intersection in Southern Shores. Try fixing that mess first before we spend much needed tax dollars on a BRIDGE OF CONVENIENCE!!!  (Tuesday Dec 29 | post #7)

Mid-Currituck Bridge nearly ready to roll

How is this bridge needed. Please see my previous comment and try to give me a reason this bridge is needed besides being a convenience. It will NOT help the traffic problems from S.Shores to Duck. Why not build a bridge that is needed desperately, the long bridge to Hatteras and quit messing around and wasting OUR taxpayer dollars on the Mid-County Bridge.  (Wednesday Dec 23 | post #5)

Currituck opposes span plan in Aydlett

Currituck County just o.k. $200,000 toward a medical helicopter for Sentara Hospital so the critically injured would receive faster care than when the roads are clear. Building this bridge will just speed the development over there and thus increase the need for greatly improved infrastructure all around. Too many people in an area with narrow roads will always have traffic the Turnpike Authority admits this. The real question is what really does Currituck County envision for the northern Outer Banks, just an extension of Kitty Hawk? How many tourists actually drive north to Corolla vs. from Southern Shores to Duck. This bridge is to placate those in Southern Shores thru Duck that are tired of the traffic. Now we'll have traffic everywhere and ruin Aydlett for what?  (Nov 18, 2009 | post #9)

Mid-Currituck Bridge nearly ready to roll

Why do we need this bridge? Fix the 158/12 interchange at Southern Shores by bringing 158 south over 158 north at the Rt 12 interchange and that will do as much or more than a $650 million bridge. If the issues on the Outer Banks from Southern Shores to Duck are not addressed adequately then this bridge is a waste of taxpayer money. We are in a time that services have been cut and teacher pay is decreasing but North Carolina has $15 million a year for a bridge that will not fix the traffic on the Outer Banks because there are too many cars on a very narrow strip of land during the summer weekends. Never mind the destruction of Aydlett by putting toll booths right by the shore in the prettiest section of Aydlett. It is not right. The people that live here have to live with this thing, and worry about the added crime that will come with it. NO TO THE MID COUNTY BRIDGE!!  (Nov 16, 2009 | post #1)

Currituck opposes span plan in Aydlett

How is the Bridge a safety issue? There has NEVER been a problem evacuating the northern outer banks. Are you saying you would rather drive through Eliz. City to evacuate? Virginia is not going to let evacuees to go north, they have enough problems. If the area is so over developed then stop developing!!! And what about that ridiculous intersection at 158/12? If that was dramatically improved ie. bring 158 south over 158 north at 12 and get rid of the stop light the traffic would improve as much or more than spending 640 million on a bridge that is NOT needed.  (Nov 14, 2009 | post #7)

I agree. This bridge will not ease traffic on NC 12. Widen 12 from Southern Shores to Duck and dramatically improve the interchange from 158 to 12 in Southern Shores. The traffic issues are The result of a poor interchange design at 158/12. If Southern Shores and Duck want the traffic to improve, then widen NC 12. You could put 100 bridges to the Outer Banks but if the base issues are not addressed then nothing will help.  (Nov 4, 2009 | post #2)

Engineer: No deal on span plan

This bridge will do little if nothing to alleviate the traffic on the northern Outer Banks. If Rt. 12 is not widened from Southern Shores to Duck and the intersection at 158 and Rt. 12 dramatically improved, this bridge is a huge waste of money and will cause Aydlett to be detrimentally changed forever. KEEP THE BRIDGE OUT OF AYDLETT!!  (Oct 27, 2009 | post #1)

New Currituck bridge option unveiled

Concerned Resident, The new option will destroy Aydlett, Maple Swamp and put 8 tollbooths right in our peaceful neighborhood, we will now worry about added crime and all the garbage the vacationers throw out their windows on their way to the beach. Now WHY CAN'T PEOPLE UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM IS AT THE RT.12 INTERSECTION WITH 158. FIX THAT INTERSECTION AND WIDEN RT. 12 FIRST!!!!!!!!! I'm sure the millions of dollars saved could be put to better use ie. teacher pay, county services etc. This bridge will only serve the vacationers for 3 months out of the year but we will have to live with our way of life being ruined forever and for what!! Real Estate Devolopers drooling over the northern outerbanks.  (Oct 14, 2009 | post #2)

Developer resurrects controversial northern beach plan

I agree that the north beach needs to be left as natural as possible. Shame on any Commissioner that allows further development in the 4x4 area. If it is allowed, it would be a sad day. If people want a more developed area, move to VA Beach!! People drive many hours to see this beautiful place and enjoy the wild horses. The Mid-County Bridge is the beginning of the end. Let the Commissioners know NO MID-COUNTY BRIDGE, and NO NEW DEVELOPMENT IN THE 4x4 AREA!!!!!  (Oct 28, 2008 | post #7)
