Mission Street cyclists get approval to 'claim lane' - Santa Cr...
It seems a lot of people who claim there is a "passing " lane on Mission Street (generally ignorant bicyclists) forget that that lane is also used to make left turns onto various side streets and parking lots, which can stop traffic in the so-called "passing " lane for a long time while waiting for traffic going the other direction to clear. As someone who drives on mission everyday, I would never ride my bicycle on that street. I'm amazed how many ignorant riders use mission without a helmet, with headphones on, riding in the lane on the wrong side of the road...I see at least one of those poor choices every single day. Have a little personal responsibility for your safety, protect yourself in ways that you can, and obey the laws just like vehicles have to. I also see bicyclists every day ride through red lights and stop signs like they don't apply to them. You won't get any respect from drivers in cars if you ride like that. I understand that having to stop and start again can be difficult on a bicycle, but the best thing to do is plan your route to avoid as many potential stopping points as possible...then actually STOP at the ones you do have to encounter. I'd have a lot more respect for the riding community in Santa Cruz if everyone tried a little harder, took their headphones off, and followed the rules of the road. (May 6, 2008 | post #44)

It really is too bad I'm seeing so many articles about people who expect to be bailed out of their bad mortgages. If you didn't read the **** paperwork, or didn't understand what it said, it isn't the city, state, or federal governments job to bail you out, and certainly not with my tax dollars. I didn't buy a house because it would have been a stretch to afford one with such inflated prices. Now I'm looking forward to all of these idiots who can't pay on their ARM getting kicked out of their house, and as rents start to go up I'll be looking to buy. Making the assumption that your home will always go up in value wasn't smart, not understanding that your mortgage payment would change wasn't smart, and nobody is responsible for your own stupidity but you. Everyone wants a handout, and nobody wants to be responsible for anything they do wrong anymore. If people think there's nothing wrong with being this stupid now, the movie Idiocracy may very well be a documentary. (Apr 23, 2008 | post #11)

Question of the day: Hands down, the parking lot I hate dealing with more than any other in town is the Safeway parking lot on mission street. There's so many people who don't pay attention walking out in front of cars, the lot is too small, and the entrance on the Almar side is always a mess. (Apr 21, 2008 | post #7)
UCSC takes security measures for '4/20" - Santa Cruz Sentinel
I don't recall seeing anything from the city about special enforcement for parking on Empire Grade. Last I checked that is a city owned road and not part of the campus, so I'd be curious how the university is enforcing special parking regulations for an off-campus road. (Apr 18, 2008 | post #30)

I don't know why all of the people who are defending Aziz don't seem to understand that being high on drugs is not an excuse, even if you didn't know you took them. How is this supposed to work...say the cops were able to resolve the situation without having to kill him, but one of the people he stabbed died, is he not guilty of murder because he was high on something he didn't know he took? The comments about being responsible for your own actions are right on. Can anyone absolutely prevent the possibility that someone could drug them with something and make them freak out? No...however you can reduce that risk by making better choices about what kind of people you are around and what kind of other substances you use. People these days need to grow up and take responsibility for their own actions. Which also includes other things like not riding a bicycle on Mission St if you are deaf. If you freak out and stab people because there's a drug in your system you still have to be responsible for your own actions while you are high. Enough excuses from everyone for this guy. I didn't believe this headline when I saw it. Typical that the sentinel would run a story about a ridiculous thing like this. Just makes me want to call the police department and ask about donations for the injured dog. (Apr 11, 2008 | post #38)

A funeral procession also requires a permit, vehicles have to be marked indicating they are participating in the procession, and even still California Vehicle Code provides no exemption from traffic regulations unless they are being directed by a police officer. Municipalities can create their own laws allowing other people to be allowed to direct traffic per vehicle code section 21100(e), but again, permit/training/permission required (varies by local laws) (Apr 9, 2008 | post #21)

Well, good to see those who were on the memorial ride were observing the laws...oh wait. I think most people agree, riding on Mission is a dumb idea under pretty much any circumstances. If you're going to have a memorial ride, that's cool, but use the right hand lane. When the group departed from the clock tower, those who were urging everyone to stay in the right lane at least understood the point they were trying to make. The being said, everyone who ran through red lights at Walnut, Laurel, and Bay should have been cited for it (I know it isn't feasible, but you all deserve it). Look, you aren't going to get motorists to support your cause if you are going to blatantly disregard the laws that everyone else on the road has to follow. I applaud the few people I saw who raised their hands signaling others to stop at the red lights (mostly older riders), but the younger people who only viewed it as an excuse to be annoying paid them no regard. You want people to share the lane with you, then you get to follow the rules too. And you don't get to run red lights just because you're on a "memorial ride". Also, to the idiots who decided to just hang out in the middle of intersections, or stop far enough over in the left hand lane to block traffic and sit there to watch everyone ride by, you weren't helping your cause. And the person in the following vehicle (white wagon) with the same yellow sign in the window as the bicyclists had definitely deserves a citation for his poor driving. He decided it was cool along with the cyclists to run the red light at Laurel with cross traffic waiting. As for the indian girl in the orange skirt who thought it was funny to completely block traffic by herself in the left hand lane, then giggle at other riders about it, you were a disgrace to those who wanted to show respect to someone who died and bring more attention to the problem of riding on Mission. Street Smarts: Motorized bike license tricky issue; caution on ...
He's not any more of an insurance risk than anyone else if he has a clean driving record. I just find it amusing that people want to make a big fuss over his record from years ago. So he got cited for a speed contest...big deal. Has anyone mentioned another vehicle on the road with him when he hit the bicyclists? No. So why would a previous speed contest citation matter? I'm older than the officer is but was involved in the bay area street racing around the same period he got into trouble. You'd also have to understand what bay area street racing was like back then before making any kind of assumptions about what kind of people were involved, or how the activities were organized. You're upset that he's a police officer and wasn't thrown into jail as soon as it happened. But if you did your research, you'd find that doesn't always happen with non officers either. They're still investigating, and they'll find out what happened. You've already determined him to be guilty though which makes you just as bad as anyone who would insist he is innocent without the facts (which his department hasn't done either). A murderous cop? I'm sure he wanted to take out the bicycle riders and make it look like he fell asleep, right? And who cares if he had a speed contest citation from years prior, that doesn't mean he can't drive, and doesn't mean he was driving at an unsafe speed when the accident happened. If he wasn't a cop, and happened to fall asleep at the wheel and cause this accident, would you be so quick to call him murderous and imply that he can't drive? Letting your own dislike for a particular group of people lead you to calling them guilty before knowing the facts isn't right either. Perhaps you should think before you type next time. If you went to another country legally, I'm sure they wouldn't deny your children an education. But, if I just decided to move to another country without going through the proper steps, they wouldn't let me put my children in school there (if I had any). Most people who think we should just let people come here from other places also don't understand how difficult it is as an American to become a citizen of another country. (Mar 13, 2008 | post #5)

LOL, I think you're missing the point when you try to suggest that JHENRY's comments are about whites only. He's talking about people who are here ILLEGALLY taking advantage of our government handouts. If you come here legally, go through all of the steps the government requires, become a tax-paying citizen, and then need to make use of a handout when things are tough then fine. I don't care if you're white, hispanic, black, or green. But don't just sneak over the border then think you're entitled to services we offer here. You also seem more interested in insults than having a reasonable conversation, since you took at least three shots at JHENRY's age after he said that he is 60 years old. Then again, ignorant younger people seem to have a general lack of respect for anyone who doesn't agree with them these days. (Mar 12, 2008 | post #138)
