Actually they do operate a "shelter " at their headquarters in Norfolk, Virginia. In 2008, they euthanized all but seven of the 2,216 animals they took in. The numbers are available at: http://www.petakil lsanimals.com/ Now, in fairness be aware that the above organization is a pro-industry lobbying group. However, they are dead right on PeTA's hypocrisy. Aha! it's not about abuse, it's about captivity. This is the PeTA party line - end animal use by humans for pets, food, circuses, medical research, and ALL other purposes. You are again PERSONIFYING the animal. Just because you wouldn't like to live in captivity does not mean that an elephant or dog or other animal has an ability to even understand the HUMAN CONCEPT of captivity. Seriously, this is America. There is nothing wrong with making money from animals so long as they are treated acceptably (as determined by actual science). If you don't like the circus, don't go. Listen up everyone. For each commenter complaining about the circus's treatment of elephants, I want to see you post your veterinary doctorate degree AND real evidence of your scientific research on elephant handling and biology (fake studies done by PeTA or H$U$ don't count). You have no evidence that using bull hooks harms elephants. You are PERSONIFYING the elephant. It's time to stop paying any attention to PeTA and for god sakes, stop sending them money. How would you like it if people were calling for you to be fired because one of your underlings screwed something up once? Give Tallon some credit for fixing the problem before it blew up (if it would have - my experience with arbitration makes me believe that Bloch would not have made the players UFAs if there were any grounds to avoid it). That said, he should get the boot if it happens again. The Hawks may actually have avoided future problems by locking Versteeg and Barker up for three years with contracts that are not unreasonable and which other teams would be interested in trading for. Do you really think that not one other team would have offered Versteeg more than $600,000, which the Hawks would have had to match or lose? A team well below the cap could have structured an offer sheet that the Hawks could not have matched (i.e. a larger than necessary cap hit). These types of shenanigans have been happening in the NFL. Also, Versteeg and Barker are both 23. I'm not sure, but wouldn't both still be RFAs after the 3 year contracts expire? I don't know whether Barker's one game in 2005-06 counts as a year of NHL experience. I'm sure the management will find a way to lock up Toews and Kieth. Kane needs to be more consistent this year and show that he can take punishment. He's small, but so was Theo Fleury.  (Jul 9, 2009 | post #13)

Ok, the 12 year thing is a "legal fiction." All contracts contain buyout provisions that should be able to end his cap impact if necessary. While Marty deserves thanks for all he did this year, Hossa is overall a better two-way player than Havlat and has shown in the past to be more durable. We may see how Huet performs when he doesn't have to sit for long stretches. It's put up or shut up time for him. Crawford is an able backup and who knows, maybe he will be this year's Jonas Hiller or Steve Mason. Khabi, like Havlat, has been injury-prone and sometimes inconsistent. In the playoffs, his goals against avg. was below .900. He was out with the same groin injury (which probably never fully healed) at least twice, including in the conference finals.
