Police: Man burned after using lighter to check gas he siphoned
Not true. This guy almost did. Next time, I propose we give him some dynamite. (Wednesday Oct 1 | post #12)
Anti-war marchers try, try try again; 200 arrested
Oh, yeah. Those look like some dangerous protestors, all right. Sarcasm aside, mob mentality affects police as well. For all of those making comments about how those arrested "now have criminal records", I'd be willing to bet that 95% are released without any charges being filed. Take the example of the WCCO reporter arrested for absolutely no reason (The officer's response was "everybody is being arrested, we'll sort you out back there" which is wholly unacceptable by what I saw of the protest, especially regarding a journalist). Those few that will have charges filed are probably already career protestors, and will likely wear this arrest as a badge of honor. Also, keep in mind that, while you may be cheering on the police treating these particular protestors like this, think about how you'd feel if they treated a group you agreed with the same way. My first impression is that I'd say the police reacted far more strongly than the situation warranted. I can't go off this one video, however. I'll need a lot more information to make up my mind. There could be quite a bit that I didn't see. (Sep 5, 2008 | post #60)
It's Palin's time to take the podium and shine
From the article: "that questions about her daughter's pregnancy are an invasion of privacy and that criticism of her experience as a small-town mayor is sexist. "It's demeaning to women," said U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn" Wait a minute, now. While I agree that what's going on with her family is nobody's business but hers, saying that questions about her qualifications are "demeaning to women" is idiotic. Every candidate should have their qualifications questioned! To say it's demeaning to an entire demographic to question the qualifications of one single person is moronic, unless people are questioning their qualifications BECAUSE of that demographic. It's no more sensible to say questioning Obama's qualifications is demeaning to black people, or questioning McCain's is demeaning to white male seniors. It's an attempt to manipulate political correctness in people: "Oh, my wondering if she's qualified for the job is sexist? Whoops, I guess I'd better just close my eyes and vote the way they tell me to." Anything that makes people more informed about the folks they are voting for is a good thing, in my humble opinion. Minneapolis police shoot, wound man after fight call
Glad no officers or innocent bystanders were hurt... that's too close to where I live for comfort. (Aug 29, 2008 | post #15)
Almost 15000 posts, I'd say someone cares. And, if you don't care, why post? ;-) (Aug 27, 2008 | post #14487)
Nice generalizations, but you don't know me. Please don't act like you do. I have no fear of hell or the judgement of your God. I don't believe either exist. You may as well be threatening me with a lump of coal in my stocking if I don't behave this year. I'll leave it for others to comment on the irony of you using the phrase "pack mentality" :) (Aug 27, 2008 | post #14370)
No worries, I'm not in the least upset that someone got my fake internet name wrongNo, I must have missed that... and I went back quite a few pages, too. Unfortunately, duty calls (I'm at work) and I need to rush of and do non-text related stuff for a while. Later, y'all :) (Aug 22, 2008 | post #11804)
I agree. Religion is a very personal thing. Really, it's hard to get more personal than that. You should always put more trust in your gut feeling and thoughts than you do in someone else's, in my experienceIt's "Hoopy" :) Hehe, you're not the first one to do that, but it's ok. It gives me a little laugh every time I see someone get that wrong. It reminds me of the old Seseme Street gag: Big Bird: "Bye, Mr. Looper!" Mr. Hooper: "HOOPER! It's 'Hooper'!" By the way, has anyone heard from Orlando Freethinker? I'm mildy concerned. (Aug 22, 2008 | post #11783)
Oh, please no. Please, please, please, not the chicken dance. The macerena is less annoying to me! (Aug 22, 2008 | post #11782)
This wasn't addressed to me, I know, but I thought I'd share a bit. Regarding the comment about the Holy Spirit helping you understand the Bible: When I was younger, and felt my faith slipping, I read the Bible, I reached out and I prayed with all my heart... only to hear nothing. No God, no Jesus, no anything. And I was listening, yearning for that voice. For years. After that, it took over ten years for the healing to begin from that sense of loss and abandonment, and for me to start getting over my anger. Another ten or so years later, and I'm in a good spot, emotionally, in regards to religion. And that is a spot without the Bible. Intellectually, emotionally, I can't accept the Bible as anything other then what it seems at first glance... words on paper. The men who wrote it may have believed fervently that they were writing the truth, but their truth is not mine. There is no possibility of a Holy Spirit of any kind helping me to understand the Bible in any fashion other than this, at least not without re-writing my personality. I can never see the holy word of God in there. I only see the zealous words of men. If the God of the Bible does exist, he missed his chance to help me. At any time during the years my faith was failing, or during that first decade of turmoil, he could have shown me the light and I would have accepted, gladly. It didn't happen. I don't believe that the God of the Bible actually exists, and I never will now. It's not that my mind is made up, or that I decided this way, it's the way I see the world. Maybe that means a lake of hellfire for me for all eternity. But that's a hollow threat to me. I don't believe that, any more then I believe I have to die a brave death in battle in order for the Valkyries to take me up to Odin's feast hall. It's all mythology to me. I imagine most non-Christians feel the same, more or less. That being said, I do admit to the possibility that I am wrong. I just don't believe it's so. But I have no problem with people believing. To look down on a Christian for their faith takes a colossal amount of arrogance. And I believe it takes an equal amount of arrogance for Christians to do the same to others, for their beliefs. I want to clarify one thing: Jesus is the Only Way, I'm not speaking directly to you with this post. Like I said, I'm just sharing. Happy Friday everyone, by the way! My condolences to those who have to work this weekend. (Aug 22, 2008 | post #11781)
I'm in the same boat. Who has the time to keep up with such a hopping board? I typically go a page or two back from the current one to see what's going on, then go from there :) (Aug 22, 2008 | post #11780)
You say bendable, others may say flexible. Don't forget, it's the willow that bends to the storm that stays whole, while the oak that stands upright is broken. You can't really judge RiverSpirit's faith any more than I can judge yours, but it seems to me that she can handle doubt and questions a lot better than many fundamentalists can. Which, it seems to me, is why many fundamentalists spend so much time trying to quash doubt in others. It's a fear that, if that doubt spreads to them, it will shatter their faith. I'm not saying this is how you are, or anyother Christians on this board, but I have known quite a few fundamentalists (and former fundamentalists and current non-Christians) who have acted in this fashion. And the former fundamentalists never bent until they broke. (Aug 22, 2008 | post #11778)

I'm just amazed how quickly and completely you derailed my derailing. My hat's off to you! That was a masterful stroke :) (Aug 21, 2008 | post #11352)
