Does Harlan have a future?

If you plant a garden and take care of it properly it will produce a crop, however if you plant a garden and fail to cultivate it then it'll die out. As is Harlan. Harlan was grew as a coal mining town. For a while, big coal companies cultivated it. However, as the companies left so did the money. No other industry exist in Harlan. No other way exist to cultivate this county. Eventually it will dry up and die out. Another problem also exist. Because industry does not exist, generations of families have developed a reliance on federal assistance to survive. Now, most of our county is supported and funded by federal assistance. If social security, SSI and food stamps became non existent, what little bit of business left in Harlan would also die out. If Harlan commerce depended on the work force alone, we would loose such things as McDonalds, Walmart, and many others. Harlan has no future, it has nothing to promise the children that grow up within it's borders. I thank God that their is still some coal around here for now, but you must admit that it ain't much. How to fix the problem is beyond the capabilities of the simple folk like us. My best advice for those who want better is for them to move away. Harlan will never grow unless it can discover some other industry besides coal. Harlan must be willing to change. However, I do not see that happening.  (Oct 9, 2011 | post #4)

County students dont read this!

That a real man will work his way through college instead of relying on daddy or uncle Sam to foot the bill. That is damn good lesson to teach our kids.  (Oct 5, 2011 | post #22)

name your bums and rednecks!

You should not talk about people like that. All of us are a bum or redneck in some sort of way, even you. An example of a redneck-ish thing is posting gossip on topix without using you name. Now it is your right not to do so, but not doing so is redneck-ish if you ask me.  (Oct 5, 2011 | post #5)

I've noticed that Berea people can't properly write a sentence. You should have said... I've noticed THAT Harlan people ARE not too smart. You forgot the "that" and your "is" should have been an "are". justsaying. LOL  (Oct 5, 2011 | post #2)

is it hard to get into the mines around here?

No, GED is not required. Be nice if it were but it's not. Best advice is to get both Surface and Underground. Then find a family member or friend that has connections. W/O connections, you are pissing into the wind.  (Oct 5, 2011 | post #5)

Demands from the Occupy Wall Street crowd.

The Libtards occupying Wall Street have come up with a proposed list of their demands. You are going to enjoy these .. are you ready? Demand one: Restoration of the living wage. This demand can only be met by ending "Freetrade " by re-imposing trade tariffs on all imported goods entering the American market to level the playing field for domestic family farming and domestic manufacturing as most nations that are dumping cheap products onto the American market have radical wage and environmental regulation advantages. Another policy that must be instituted is raise the minimum wage to twenty dollars an hr. Demand two: Institute a universal single payer healthcare system. To do this all private insurers must be banned from the healthcare market as their only effect on the health of patients is to take money away from doctors, nurses and hospitals preventing them from doing their jobs and hand that money to wall st. investors. Demand three: Guaranteed living wage income regardless of employment. Demand four: Free college education. Demand five: Begin a fast track process to bring the fossil fuel economy to an end while at the same bringing the alternative energy economy up to energy demand. Demand six: One trillion dollars in infrastructure (Water, Sewer, Rail, Roads and Bridges and Electrical Grid) spending now. Demand seven: One trillion dollars in ecological restoration planting forests, reestablishing wetlands and the natural flow of river systems and decommissioning of all of America's nuclear power plants. Demand eight: Racial and gender equal rights amendment. Demand nine: Open borders migration. anyone can travel anywhere to work and live. Demand ten: Bring American elections up to international standards of a paper ballot precinct counted and recounted in front of an independent and party observers system. Demand eleven: Immediate across the board debt forgiveness for all. Debt forgiveness of sovereign debt, commercial loans, home mortgages, home equity loans, credit card debt, student loans and personal loans now! All debt must be stricken from the "Books." World Bank Loans to all Nations, Bank to Bank Debt and all Bonds and Margin Call Debt in the stock market including all Derivatives or Credit Default Swaps, all 65 trillion dollars of them must also be stricken from the "Books." And I don't mean debt that is in default, I mean all debt on the entire planet period. Demand twelve: Outlaw all credit reporting agencies. Demand thirteen: Allow all workers to sign a ballot at any time during a union organizing campaign or at any time that represents their yeah or nay to having a union represent them in collective bargaining or to form a union. Even if you are Republican, Democrat, or Independent, we can all agree that this is ignorance at it's finest.  (Oct 5, 2011 | post #1)

County students dont read this!

This is a bunch of bull. It is one damn county. The problem is that we spend more time pitting the schools against each other, than we do teaching our children. Raw makes a good point, however I can see why you guys think he took it a bit too far. IF you know ole Raw, he always takes it too far, but sometimes you have to go a bit farther to make a point. Anyhow, the county scored low. That is obvious, now what we need to do as parents is demand answered and correct problems. But you will find that the reason has to do with the child, the parent and the school. In other words... the best way to fix the problem it to improve part of the equation.  (Oct 5, 2011 | post #10)

Coal is not pollution. It comes from the earth. It is a natural product of the earth.  (Oct 3, 2011 | post #3)
